Samsung's Galaxy Note just grew to 8 inches. It's actually really nice. It combines a bunch of the stuff that Samsung's been building in the Galaxy S and Note series and puts them into a nearly perfectly sized tablet. Two things, though. One, we don't know how much it costs, and price is a huge deal for 7- and 8-inch tablets. Two, the international version is a freaking 8-inch phone.
First, some details about the Note as a tablet. (Full specs, as we know them, below.) The Note 8's 8-inch display has the same 1280x800 resolution (16:10 ratio) as the Kindle Fire HD 7-inch, though obviously a slightly

Apple’s shares were hit after investors worried that a hiring freeze at Foxconn’s China plants is related to slowing iPhone 5 sales. Foxconn suspended recruitment at its factories in Zhengzhou and Shenzhen and it also reportedly postponed the construction of a new factory. Though this may point to slackening demand for the iPhone 5, it could also mean that Foxconn is preparing to adjust its production line in order to install automated robots as a way to get around increasing wages and concerns that poor working conditions played a role in a series of worker suicides. It’s unclear how long the reduction will last — neither EA (which now owns PopCap) or PopCap have made that information available — so it’s probably a good idea to download it as soon as you can. You’ll be saving yourself just under $10 for what is undeniably one of the best games on iOS.

Apple Says It Was Targeted By The Same Hackers That Hit Facebook, Will Release Protection Software Tuesday - techcrunch.com
Apple has revealed that it was attacked by the same group that went after Facebook in a recent attempt to break that network’s security. The company says a “small number” of its employees’ Macs were affected, but there is “no evidence that any data left Apple,” according to a report by Reuters. The company will be issuing software to prevent customers from being attacked in the same manner, Apple said.

Here’s What Apple’s iWatch Might Look Like According To Concept Designers - cultofmac.com
Over the last couple months, we’ve seen Apple fanboys’ obsession move away from an Apple TV set, and focus on the iWatch. As rumors have ramped up that Apple might make their own wearable computer very soon, people have wondered what an iWatch might look like.
We’ve seen a lot of concept renderings of iWatches over the past two years, and while many of them have been a bit crazy, some are pretty neat and feasible. We don’t really know much about the iWatch other than it will have a curved glass display and be worn on the wrist, but if you combine a few aspects from each of these concepts, you might get a ballpark idea of what the

I’m shopping for a car right now. Just something that can handle a little city driving and frequent trips to the cottage in the warmer months, with the ability to haul a decent amount of cargo. I’m weighing factors like size, fuel economy, engine power, cargo space and FWD vs. AWD, but for my purposes most of those points are relatively moot; I really just need something to get me from A to B. But I find myself more concerned with the in-car entertainment system, and how it works with my mobile device of choice.
I’m far from a car buff, so my priorities might not line up with those of actual automotive enthusiasts, but my smartphone

The Pros And Cons Of A WebKit Monoculture - techcrunch.com
The news that Opera is shutting down the development of its own browser rendering engine and moving to the open source WebKit engine caused quite a stir earlier this week. With WebKit powering the built-in browsers of Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS, it’s already the de-facto standard engine for mobile and it has the potential to do the same on the desktop. Worldwide, Chrome now holds a considerable lead over Microsoft’s Trident-powered Internet Explorer and Mozilla’s Gecko for Firefox already. The question is: are we better off because we have competing engines trying to outdo each other, or would we be better off if all the browser vendors just standardized on

There’s Already An Apple In The Games Industry: The Games Industry - techcrunch.com
Apple entering the games space has been a topic of discussion for a long time. Some people think they already made their move and it’s still playing out. Some people think they are yet to drop the bomb. Most oversimplify the issue.
There’s a funny thing, though, about the way proponents of Apple (I say this without denigration) cheerlead their champion. In a lot of ways, there’s already an Apple in the games industry: it’s the games industry. Apple is filling the position in the games industry that Android fills in the mobile world.
Part of what makes it problematic to discuss is that is that it’s really difficult to disentangle content

Now, it’s not like this is a completely insane notion. Anyone who has been following the smartphone space for the past few years knows that Apple has sort of backed into video game dominance by way of their iOS devices. Apple has sold over 500 million of them. These devices

Thanks to its complicated regulatory structure and the continuing popularity of web-enabled feature phones, Japan’s mobile market is difficult for foreign companies to penetrate. But Apple has finally managed to work its way to the top, according to a report by Counterpoint Research (h/t TNW).
Apple took a 16 percent market share in Q4 2012 and 15 percent for the full year of 2012, taking the top slot for the first time in annual terms and displacing Sharp’s six-year reign as champion. Sharp and Fujitsu each took 14 percent of the market in 2012. The research report notes that Apple had temporarily displaced Sharp in Q4 2011,

Has Tim Cook Killed Nike Fuelband’s Android Future? - cultofmac.com
Why doesn’t Nike want to bring the Fuelband to Android?
The Nike Fuelband was one of my favorite gadgets last year. It tracks all your movement to help you stay in shape. It syncs everything with your iPhone. Plus, it looks pretty freaking cool.
Nike Fuelband is part of the wave of futuristic wearable fitness devices. In a couple of years we’ll all have something like it, but for now, the Nike Fuelband only syncs with your computer or iPhone. There’s no Android app, and according to Nike, you shouldn’t hold your breath waiting for one.

Apple iWatch rumors have hit the mainstream, thanks to reports from both The New York Times’ Nick Bilton and The Wall Street Journal’s Jessica Lessin, with sources describing “curved glass” “watch-like” prototypes, potentially with components in production testing at Apple supply-chain partner Foxconn. But before you label a jar “Apple iWatch Reserve Fund” and start pinching your pennies, consider the likelihood that this kind of tech is coming to store shelves soon, if at all.

The question is not if, but when?
And we may be getting closer, as Apple has listed a job posting looking for a Siri UI Engineer with a few hints at OS X integration.
This isn’t the first we’re hearing of a potential Siri rollout on the desktop level. In November, 9to5mac reported that Siri and Apple maps would be present in the next version of OS X.

Apple updates KB article warning users of the ‘perils’ of Jailbreaking iOS - 9to5mac.com
Although there doesn’t seem to be much changed from previous versions apart from some re-ordering, Apple has updated its Knowledge Base article on unauthorized modification of iOS devices following this week’s release of the evasi0n jailbreak tool. The article warned users that jailbreaking could cause numerous issues from shortened battery life to security vulnerabilities and other common issues. Jailbreaking, as outlined by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, isn’t illegal in the United States, but Apple said it might refuse to service devices that have been jailbroken. Jay Freeman, operator of the jailbroken Cydia app

Having a look around our newly jailbroken iPads with iFunBox, we happened on a new set of files in the iPad Music.app. The files are called some variation of “radio button” with an icon that looks similar to the radio icon that used to be in iTunes for Mac (it was traded for a more prominent top location in iTunes 11 without the antenna tower). The iPad music app currently doesn’t have any radio functionality, so our first thought was that Apple would be adding an iTunes-like

That iOS 6.1 jailbreak that was maybe probably definitely supposed to come out today, courtesy of evad3rs? Bad news; it's not coming until tomorrow. Despite the rumored (and hoped) Super Bowl-day launch date, we'll all have to wait just a little longer.
Final count down toward tomorrow's release has begun!

When the jailbreak does eventually come through, it'll support all iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches running iOS 6.1, the first of its kind to cover devices with Apple's new A6 chip, which includes the iPhone 5. It's definitely coming folks, but for the time being you'll have to

Look! Apple just released a new product during the Super Bowl. Actually, it’s a new product for App Store developers – short “AppStore.com” vanity URLs. The domain made a grand public appearance at the end of the ad for the new Star Trek movie, which pointed viewers to Appstore.com/StarTrekApp instead of, perhaps, Facebook.com/StarTrekMovie or the movie’s homepage, which is the kind of link that usually gets this prime spot in TV advertising.
CNET was the first to spot the ad, noting that the domain “AppStore.com” was a personal gift to Steve Jobs from Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff back in 2008.

Can Apple Still Dent the Universe? - cultofmac.com
Apple made a “dent in the universe” with its 1984 Super Bowl ad for the upcoming Macintosh.
At least that was Steve Jobs’ intention, according to the opening scene of The Pirates of Silicon Valley.
Whether all this universe denting was just Jobs’ reality distortion field or an actual change in human culture depends on your corporate loyalties, or lack thereof.
Any debate over the cultural impact of the Macintosh really boils down to how much of the graphical user interface revolution was determined or influenced by Apple, and how much of it would have happened regardless.
Because there’s no question that the shift from command-line computing to WIMP computing (windows, icons, menus

So cute, and so functional!
The iHook is back, folks, and it’s even better than it was the last time we told you about it. Unfortunately, it won’t open a beer for you, so that’s, um, out.
Recently re-upped at Kickstarter, the iHook Dual Edition will not only connect to your iPod Nano, making it an ideal way to mount the little square of joy, but it now allows you to connect an iPod Shuffle, too.
Once the iHook guys designed their neat little Nano mount system, Apple stopped making the tiny little iPod. Sad, but not defeated, the iHook team went back to the drawing board and designed a new iHook that would fit both the Nano 6G and the current Shuffle. How fun

It’s Superbowl week so it’s time to talk about chips – the ones that go in “smart” things, not the ones eaten by Americans. This week’s headlines have been dominated by Facebook. I hear they are quite big with the college kids. But, Qualcomm really is crushing it. They deserve a little attention. They are bigger than Facebook at $108 billion. Today, Qualcomm added approximately $5 billion to their market capitalization,

While rumors have suggested it in the past, it's now official: after years of complete and utter redundancy, Sony is finally killing off the MiniDisc.
Sony has announced that it will ship its last MiniDisc player in March of 2013. The biggest question it raises, of course, is: who the hell is still buying these things? Assuming they're not being piled up in a warehouse for eternity, presumably some poor guy is buying a shiny MiniDisc player, right now, as if it's the Next Big Thing.
Which, just over twenty years ago, it was. Launched all the way back in 1992, the optical format squeezed music into what was
