T-Mobile Wants Unlocked iPhones And Offers Big Savings, But Is Its Network Ready?T-Mobile currently has over 1 million unlocked iPhones running on its network, the majority of which use 2G data speeds.

For a company that’s wanting to “sell against the iPhone,” T-Mobile still wants whatever business it can get from unlocked iPhone owners. Earlier today we told you about T-Mobile’s new microSIM kits that will easily unlock an iPhone 4/4S to run on its GSM network.
It appears that T-Mobile is also readying flyers that say “Bring Your iPhone to T-Mobile for BIG SAVINGS!” But can T-Mobile’s network really support iPhone users on 3G and eventually 4G speeds?
According to TmoNews, T-Mobile has

Apple, Samsung to argue potential bans on infringing phones December 6th in US District Court Ardent followers of the Apple v. Samsung hearing in California have another date to circle in their calendars: December 6th. AllThingsD and Reuters report Judge Lucy Koh has put that down as the day the two companies can make their cases over two key steps in the process since the verdict (check out our breakdown of the decision and what its $1.05 billion damage award means here) was handed down Friday evening. Apple is requesting an injunction to block the sale of Samsung phones that were found to infringe upon its patents, while Samsung wants to have the jury's verdict set aside. T-Mobile memo asks staff to sell 'against the iPhone' on September 21st T-Mobile has been virtually screaming for an iPhone deal, but a memo leaked to TmoNews suggests Apple isn't prepared to listen just yet. The note tells carrier staff they'll get training material to learn "selling against the iPhone" from September 21st onwards. Why does that date sound familiar? Although we don't know if T-Mobile has an inside track on Apple's plans or is just making assumptions based on rumors, that's not the language we would associate with a carrier that has a new agreement to sell the iPhone -- not unless it's using a loose definition of the word "against," at least. As a consolation, T-Mobile is reportedly supplying updated micro-SIM

Your smartphone can do a lot, but how much would you have to pay to get that same kind of functionality out of traditional, single-purpose gadgets? The Next Web did the math on it, and the answer is: A lot.
If you were to buy gadgets to replace all of your phone's built-in features (a camera, an iPod, a calculator, a GPS, an eReader, a video phone, etc) the total would probably come out to around $1,228.00, and the stack of gadgets would weigh roughly eight pounds.
This isn't exactly a perfect analogue, but the cost is so high that you get the point anyway. As The Next Web puts it:

You should know this is a completely

Analyst: 13.3-inch MacBook Pro Retina display now in production from Samsung, LGD and Sharp
NPD DisplaySearch analyst Richard Shim, per CNET, says Apple is set to release a 13.3-inch MacBook Pro, with manufacturing already started. The 13-inch version is said to be cheaper than the current 15.4-inch Retina model (obviously) and will rock a 2,560-by-1,600 display. A smaller device at a cheaper price point could make for a better buy in the consumer eye.
The report goes on to note that Samsung, LGD and Sharp will be manufacturing the display for the 13.3-inch MacBook Pro. Production for the display is said to be much greater than the 15.4-inch. “With 15.4 it’s production of a few hundred

When the verdict in the Apple vs. Samsung trail came back so fast, despite having so many individual decisions to it, there was plenty of speculation that the jury might not have really cared or been informed. Jurors themselves are saying otherwise.
CNET and Reuters reached out to two of the jurors, both of whom assert the verdict wasn't rushed or made with any sort of vagueness. This was a very deliberate ruling, and they meant to send a message.
Juror Manuel Ilagan told CNET the following, when asked about specific instances of willful infringment:

Well, there were several. The e-mails that went back and

IDC: iPhone wait cuts Apple's China phone share by nearly half, Lenovo seizes the opportunity There's a lot of talk of a new iPhone coming soon, and the Chinese know it. IDC researchers estimate that Apple's share of smartphones in the country was sliced almost in half during the second quarter, to 10 percent, as expectations and rumors led the local population to wait for the big update. Better competition also played a part in denting iPhone shipments, although it's not Apple's chief rival Samsung who's responsible. Rather, it's China's own Lenovo that had the most impact. It broke into the double digits with a second-place 11 percent share thanks to recently started indirect sales of its Android-dominated lineup, while Samsung

Apple, Samsung respond to the jury's decision; September 20th court date set for injunction hearing Well. The verdict for the tech industry patent trial of the week is in, and the jury agreed with Apple's version of the events enough to award it a billion dollars and change in damages while awarding Samsung... nothing. Naturally, the two companies differ in their viewpoints on this ruling, with Apple celebrating a decision that supports its originality and innovation, and is "sending a loud and clear message that stealing isn't right." Samsung, on the other hand, claims it's all about standing up for the consumer, who it believes will be the true victim here, forced to pay more for fewer choices and less innovation now that one company has

Reuters is reporting that LG has started mass production of a "new and thinner display, widely speculated to be for use in Apple's next iPhone." It makes sense, especially since we expect the iPhone 5 to be announced on September 12th, for factories to start pumping out iPhone 5 parts.
The screens LG is working on is expected to be 4-inches—nearly 30% bigger than current iPhones—but also incredibly thin. The new screens embed touch sensors into the display so there's no need for a separate touch-screen layer. Eliminating unnecessary parts means jumping ahead in the ongoing smartphone race to stay thin and

Amazon seems to be the safe pick, if only because Amazon Instant Video is everywhere (Xbox, iPad, PS3, Roku) while iTunes only plays nice with Apple, but I'm already fairly entrenched in Apple's ecosystem so it wouldn't be too big of an issue for me anyway. Both sides are arguing their cases (and defending themselves) concurrently, and each have done their part to either submerge evidence or slip some to the press, all the while infuriating

iLounge reported in May that Apple is allegedly working on a “standalone digital camera, specifically a point-and-shoot model.” The website further said the device would deliver an image quality far beyond what the iPhone and iPad could deliver and attributed its information to sources, camera-related job openings at Apple, a re-trademarked iSight filing, and Walter Isaacson’s biography on Apple’s late cofounder. According to Isaacson, Steve Jobs named photography as one of three industries that he wanted to transform.
With that said, a camera would be a decidedly high-end market that

Google Files New Patent Lawsuit Against Apple, Seeks To Block iPhone, iPad & Mac Imports To U.S.
According to Bloomberg, Google’s Motorola unit just filed a new patent-infringement lawsuit against Apple with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) in Washington. According to this report, Motorola’s complaint seeks to block Apple from importing the iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and “various Apple computers.” Today’s lawsuit is only the latest in a long series of recent disputes between Apple and Motorola/Google, but it marks the first time that Motorola is filing one of these lawsuits since its acquisition by Google became final in February.
It’s not currently clear what exactly the patents are that Google is trying to defend

The Honorable Judge Lucy Koh Accuses Apple’s Lawyer Of Smoking Crack
The best part of the entire Apple-Samsung patent war has been Federal Judge Lucy Koh. She’s a smaller woman with straight, silk black hair, but she manages to make some of the wealthiest lawyers and highest level executives bow down.
She’s an Alpha, and not without a touch of humor, either.
In fact, today she asked Apple’s attorney if he was smoking crack. At least, that’s what this tweet from NYT writer Nick Wingfield says.
Apple’s attorney responded with, “Your Honor, I’m not smoking crack.”

Judge Koh just accused Apple’s attorneys of “smoking crack.” “You’re Honor, I’m not smoking crack,” an Apple

Apple’s new set-top box to feature DVR-like media access and iPad-like icon interface
Going away from the constant rumors that Apple is building its own TV set, yesterday evening the Wall Street Journal reported that Apple is in talks with cable television operators to use an Apple TV device as a set-top-box. Adding to yesterday’s report, the publication has shared another note today with more details of Apple’s vision for the new device. This evening’s report mentions is that Apple is looking to introduce a feature that will allow users to view a TV show at any time, even minutes after it has begun. iCloud DVR has a nice ring to it.

13 years old and already has more apps in the App Store than I do.

Last year, Nicholas G. was 12-years-old. He convinced his dad to get him a developer account from Apple, and began to learn how to program apps.
Nicholas is now 13, and the second update to his first app, Quick Notes!!, is out on the App Store. Version 1.0, says Nicholas, has already accrued over 3,000 downloads. How many downloads did your app have when you were 13? Mine didn’t have any. It still doesn’t.
Better yet? Nicholas hasn’t taken a programming class, at school or on the internet.

Two years ago, Nicholas’ older brother moved away to college, and got a new Macbook

If you're still looking for a Cupertino-embued display you may be in luck, since the anonymous parties also indicate the set-top box tech it's working on could be integrated with HDTVs. ‘It’s Time For Peace’ – Judge Urges Apple, Samsung To Talk One Last Time Before Jury Delibarations

At the end of a long trial day, US District Court Judge Lucy Koh, who’s been the presiding justice over the course of both pre-trial and actual trial, urged that Apple and Samsung speak together to try and resolve their differences out of court before the jury comes back to deliberate on the evidence that has been presented by both sides this week and last.
“It’s time for peace,” Koh said, adding, “I see risks here for both sides.”

The suit, if you’re unfamiliar with the case, was originally brought to court by Apple, who claims that Samsung has copied its iPhone hardware and software design to a

Last week, we took a look at iOS apps that keep you aware of your surroundings as you listen to music through headphones, and found a fairly healthy selection to choose from on Apple's mobile platform. These apps either allow you to hear surrounding noises while listening to music through your phone's or headphone's microphone, or paused the music when a sudden noise was detected.
Not only is this a useful safety feature, a good way to listen to music while attending to a sleeping baby, and probably applicable to more situations than we can imagine, but it can also turn your music into a real soundtrack

Day Seven of Samsung-Apple Trial Finds More Attorney Battles

In the latest drama in the contentious Apple-Samsung patent trial, Samsung accused Apple of trying to extend the range of authorship of its patent holdings through sales figures of global products not covered by U.S. law.
Lawyers for Samsung explained that three phones that have been repeatedly used as examples of exact replication by Apple are not, in fact, sold in the US and have been trying to throw them out of evidence. Their argument is that if the phones are not really sold in the U.S., and there are no significant marketing attempts to help sell them, then there is no reason they should be admitted in a U.S. court where they don’t

Judge cuts international Galaxy S and S II, Galaxy Ace from Apple lawsuit against Samsung Apple rested its side of the case in its main lawsuit against Samsung on Monday, and with the switch of focus came a small sacrifice. While Samsung failed in a Hail Mary bid to have the suit dismissed, it successfully argued that a few devices should escape the clutches of a full-fledged ban. Don't get too excited, though: the exclusion list mostly touches on phones that only reach US shores through unofficial importers, including the Galaxy Ace as well as international editions of the Galaxy S and Galaxy S II. The decision still leaves the American variants of phones under scrutiny, and it doesn't change Apple's hopes of a large licensing

While the tipster hasn't been courteous enough to do a side-by-side with the older component, repair shop iDeviceGuys notes to 9to5 Mac that the newer part isn't just a carbon copy; that smaller SIM slot (what you see in the middle) is one of the bigger giveaways. In 2010, Apple offered to license iOS device patents to Samsung: $40 a tablet, $30 a phone
AllThingsD shares major news that in October 2010, Apple executives met with Samsung executives in hopes to settle Apple’s feelings that Samsung’s tablets and smartphones infringe Apple’s iPhone and iPad iOS device patents. According to new filings, in this meeting, Apple proposed a patent licensing deal with Samsung. Apple apparently felt that a deal rather than litigation – at that time – was the best move to make. This is because of Apple and Samsung’s long-term iOS device component relationship.

It was time for another Apple expert witness today, who said that consumers would be willing to pay $100 for three specific, patented features that are at issue in the high-profile, high-stakes court case against Samsung. John Hauser, called by Apple as an expert due to his role as a marketing professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), said that in his internet survey, consumers were willing to pay this much more for features like scrolling or multitouch. The survey, Apple proposes, has relevance when calculating potential damages for Apple due to potential patent infringement. Apple is seeking over $2.5 billion from Samsung.

Apple comments on Gizmodo/Wired writer’s account hacking, here’s how it went down…Over the weekend, we reported on the hacking of the digital life of Wired’s Mat Honan.
Mat Honan wrote up his whole story over at Wired. The scariest part is that they were able to reproduce the hack using 2 pieces of publicly available information and a phone call.
We talked to Apple directly about its security policy, and company spokesperson Natalie Kerris told Wired, “Apple takes customer privacy seriously and requires multiple forms of verification before resetting an Apple ID password. In this particular case, the customer’s data was compromised by a person who had acquired personal information about the customer. In addition,

Kno starts offering K-12 textbooks on tablets, scores industry-first deal with Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Kno's tablet textbooks have only ever been available to the college crowd; the younger among us have typically had to get a comprehensive digital education from either the tablet maker's own solution, like Apple's iBooks 2, or less-than-integrated options. A new deal for K-12 books is giving the students, if not necessarily the teachers, a fresh alternative. Parents can now rent books for home studying at prices under $10 per title. They're not state-specific books, but their Common Core roots will keep learners on the same (virtual) page as classmates while adding Kno's usual 3D, links, notes and

Samsung May Sell More Units, But Apple Makes More Profit

Winning.

While Apple and Samsung duke it out in Northern California this week, it makes sense to take a little time comparing the two on sales numbers, units shipped, and profit made. And while many folks these days like to bring up the fact that more Samsung devices are sold than iOS devices, those same folks are missing the boat.
According to a report from Raymond James analyst Tavis McCourt, via website AllThingsD, Apple’s iOS devices are making its company a ton more profit than Samsung’s devices are. Let’s take a look at the numbers.

The report says that Apple only shipped around 6 percent of the smartphones in the US this past quarter, but brought in

New construction at Apple's North Carolina data center poses for aerial photographs Photos courtesy of Wired reveal that Apple's new "tactical" data center at its Maiden, North Carolina facility is well on its way to completion. Captured with the help of a decidedly low-tech airplane -- a 1949 Piper PA-11 Cub Special, if you must know -- the shots feature what appear to be the facade of the $1.9 million, 21,000 square-foot structure that was outed last month. The images also show glimpses of a second 20-megawatt photovoltaic array and what may be the foundations of the complex's planned 4.8-megawatt biofuel cell plant, which will convert biogas into electricity. With Apple's upcoming Reno project

Senator Al Franken doesn’t believe AT&T should be able to charge extra for FaceTime.
Last month we broke the news that there were clear signs that AT&T was at least laying the groundwork for charging an additional fee for FaceTime over their network. You really don’t need any more evidence than the screenshot above but AT&T’s CEO went on record refusing to deny the plans.
That might not be such a smart move, however. Already, US Senators like Al Franken, don’t seem to cool with the idea, with the former comedian from Minnesota saying in an interview with Nilay Patel of the Verge
“That’s wrong,” he quickly replied when told of rumors that claim Ma Bell may place a premium on Apple’s

Alleged images of 7-inch iPad shell appear from the east Hey, did you hear... Apple is making a 7-inch iPad. Well, the top brass at least thought about it, this much we know. What might it look like if it ever comes to be? Well, if you're willing to be a bit skeptical, it might look like the above. These images -- claiming to be legit iPad parts -- popped up on Chinese social media site Sina Weibo. There's little other activity on the account to back up the source, and the omission of a camera hole might irk some, but if these were early parts, then that could be something that is added later. For now, we're left to fill in the gaps with out imagination, which also includes hoping other recent teases might also make the leap into

Today in court, during the current ongoing legal battle between Apple and Samsung, an internal email thread between four Apple execs—Eddy Cue, Tim Cook, Scott Forstall, and Phil Schiller—was released into evidence. The subject of the email: size matters. No, really. Those are Cue's words, not mine.
The point Samsung's team was trying to make with this particular piece of evidence is that Apple keeps close watch over and takes great interest in the products of other companies in their peer group.

Apple SVP Scott Forstall talks creation of the iPhone (Project Purple) and ‘giving up nights and weekends for years’
Shortly after Apple SVP of Worldwide Marketing Phil Schiller took the witness stand, Apple SVP of iOS Software Scott Forstall took the witness stand to testify in the Apple vs. Samsung case. Forstall has been with Apple for fifteen years and was one of the main brains behind the creation of the iPhone. As noted by AllThingsD, who is in the courtroom, Forstall spoke at length about the creation of the iPhone.
According to Forstall, Steve Jobs told him in 2004 that he couldn’t hire anyone outside of the company to assist in the creation of the device. Instead Forstall had to

Apple Confronts Samsung In Court About Internal Documents With Incriminating Titles

Apple went after Samsung today in the most direct and perhaps damaging interchange, yet, using Samsung’s own internal documents to prove Apple’s claim that Samsung’s practices go beyond mere competition and are truly copyright infringement.
Apple called Justin Denison, Samsung’s chief strategy officer, to the stand today. Attorney for Apple Bill Lee, after some preliminary questioning, went right for the jugular, directly calling out Samsung, and asking Denison point blank if Samsung had copied Apple products. Denison denied the claim, and then Lee pulled out a set of internal documents from Samsung. Some of

Seedio app networks iDevices into loudspeaker, blasts music far and wide Yearning to break free from earbud-induced isolation and spring towards a music listening experience with a social slant? Seedio for iOS can help. Built by a team of six developers, the app networks local iDevices over WiFi and allows one user to stream music to others. Audio from iTunes or YouTube is queued up by the designated disc jockey, or "seeder," and plays through each device's speakers in unison to create a distributed, makeshift loudspeaker. If the situation calls for a quieter jam session, however, you can forgo the speakers and listen in with headphones instead. Up to 150 devices can connect through a single router, but four is the current limit when

Apple Files For Sanctions Against Samsung After Documents Released To Media

Remember the excluded Samsung documents we told you about yesterday? The ones that Samsung sent out to the media after they had been denied the ability to enter them into court? We told you how Samsung’s lawyer, John B. Quinn, argued that sending them along to journalists was neither unethical nor illegal. Apple has a different opinion, which they filed in court today.

In that filing, Apple said that “Samsung and its counsel engaged in bad faith litigation misconduct by attempting to prejudice the jury,” according to the Wall Street Journal. Apple further said the court “should not condone this behavior” and should

Apple’s iPhone 5,2 Prototype Showing Up In Server Logs
A few short days after rumors began swirling that Apple would hold this year’s fall event on Sept. 12, a reliable source just sent a screen grab of a next-gen iPhone popping up in his/her/its server logs.
We weren’t able to glean any other info from the one session the prototype iPhone was engaged in, but the naming convention falls in line with what others have previously reported. It remains unclear if the iPhone 5,2 will go into production – as opposed to the iPhone 5,1 – or whether it will remain an internal-only test unit.
Rumors are still rampant that Apple will increase the size of the screen from 3.5 inches (diagonal) to ~4 inches and that the 30-pin

Woz Surprised With Birthday Party At SF Museum Of Modern Art

Steve Wozniak, one of the two famous Steves who created Apple Computer back in the early days of Silicon Valley, went to the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco this evening, unaware that a party was brewing there in his honor.
The surprise birthday party was thrown by Fusion-io, the company that employs Wozniak as chief scientist. Secretly invited guests arrived to find pink boas, noise makers, and a chance to play Tetris, according to AllThingsD, who took some photos at the event.

How such a tech-savvy crowd managed to keep things a secret from the Woz is a testament to their dedication to the man himself. Apparently, one drunk message showed up last night, but Steve’s

Google just introduced new content restrictions for apps in Google Play in hopes that it can crack down on the malicious apps that pollute the Android ecosystem.
For the longest time, Google Play, like the Android Market before it, has been an unregulated wilderness, so it's a good thing Google's drawing a line in the sand. The new policy is designed to ban apps that intentionally deceive users, those the collect or disseminate your private information, as well as spammy apps. Google also bans apps that contain sexually explicit or violent behavior and those that

According to the AP, the Economic Development Board of Nevada has approved a deal negotiated by the state to lure Apple Inc. to Reno with $89 million in tax breaks. Apple plans to build a 350-acre data center east of nearby Sparks NV which will employ 35+ full-time workers with an hourly wage of $25, as well as up to 200 contract workers.
