These Leaked Pictures Of The Budget iPhone Are As Colorful As A Pack Of Skittles - cultofmac.com
It’s looking very likely that the so-called “budget” iPhone will be announced in September. In reality, it will be less budget than mid-range, costing about $350 before contract subsidations. Even so, that should be enough for carriers to sell for $0 with a two-year contract, strengthening Apple’s presence in the market.
We’ve heard before that the budget iPhone would come in an iPod-style assortment of colors, and now new pictures purport to show exactly what the rear shell of the budget iPhone will look like.
For right now, we’re reserving judgment: it’s hard to believe Apple would go with something like

In 2002, the first LCD-based iMac succeeded the translucent PowerPC G3-based models that the original Bondi Blue iMac begat. The new generation was much more striking than the one that had placed Apple on the comeback trail. The iMac G4 mounted the display on a balanced arm similar to a Luxo lamp while the motherboard resided in a hemispherical base. This allowed the display to be adjusted to a wide range of heights and angles and each of the two main sections to be "true to itself."
Alas, the design had its limits. It's difficult to imagine today's ample 27-inch iMac displays balancing off such a mount.

Specific to Lytro, the free app also allows users to upload photos to Lytro’s

Months after Hurricane Sandy left New York scrambling for power, the city is unveiling 25 solar powered charging stations in parks and public spaces throughout the five boroughs, starting today.
The pilot project between AT&T and the city of New York is officially called AT&T Street Charge. (DUMBO firm Pensa handled design, and Goal Zero provided the solar technology, AT&T handled the cash.) Why Was Apple Late To The PRISM Party? - techcrunch.com
If there’s one striking thing about those PRISM slides, other than their hideous aesthetics, it’s that Apple’s allocated yellow oval, instead of a date, has the words “(added Oct 2012)” underneath it. That difference is most striking when you consider the fact that Apple competitor Microsoft cooperated with the government a full five years earlier.
The company, which denies ever having heard of PRISM, released its FISA request numbers today, starting on December 1st, 2012, through this May 2013. To go along with his complete redesign of iOS, Jony Ive’s official executive title at Apple has been flattened to drop the word “Industrial.” The change is notable as this new title plants Ive’s position as being where the buck stops for the design of all of Apple’s products…
Ive’s former position as chief of hardware design was expanded to provide “leadership and direction” for Apple’s interface teams last fall in tandem with Scott Forstall leaving Apple.

I had the opportunity to travel to San Francisco this year for WWDC and experience the City by the Bay for my first time. Though I wasn’t among the lucky few to attend the keynote this year, that hardly robbed me of any adventure in the journey. Because this was my first time making the trek (and I was technically covering a portion of the event for work), I deliberately planned what gear was most appropriate for trip and sort of compiled a list of recommendations based on my experience below.
My iPhone 5 (16GB, black) was the most important item to bring of course. I even ended up with two iPhone 5′s before the week was over, but more on

Why do some companies, products and services get more word of mouth than others? It’s not luck. There’s a science behind it. Social media gurus always preach that no one talks about boring products or boring ideas. So you would think that more interesting products and brands get talked about more. Apple has just posted a lengthy, nearly 10 minute video (via 9to5Mac) about how apps built for its platform are used around the world to make changes that significantly impact people’s lives. It’s a very different approach from the typical Apple commercial, which is generally a short affair focusing on what apps are doing to add a little bit of levity or convenience to the average consumer’s life.
This is much more about big-picture issues, and profound impacts on a select few people that are truly life-changing. It’s actually thematically pretty similar to the company’s new “Our Signature” ad for television, but with a strong focus on actual

Apple's Favorite New Startup Wants to Be the Pixar of Robotics - gizmodo.comApple CEO Tim Cook surprised everyone at this year's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) when he invited a tiny robotics startup onto the stage. Out came Boris Sofman, the chief executive of the fast-growing artificially intelligent robotics company Anki. What followed was a glitchy demo of Anki Drive, a seemingly mundane toy car game and the young company's first product. But these are no ordinary cars. These cars drive themselves. They make hundreds if not thousands of decisions a second. They adapt over time. In other words, these cars are smart.

Apple Stays Closed As iOS Shuts The Door On Developers - techcrunch.com
Apple demonstrated that it will keep its iron grip on iOS 7, despite Tim Cook saying it’s time for Apple to start opening up. UniKey's whole lock replacement Kevo system is the less jarring of the four smart lock solutions, as it looks exactly like any deadbolt you've ever seen before. UniKey doesn't actually rely on Bluetooth's security protocol but instead relies on a public-key infrastructure system to authenticate users. So even if someone were able to sniff out a key, they wouldn't be able to use it again.
As UniKey President Phil Dumas told me, "There are more possible combinations to our lock than there are hydrogen particles in the observable universe." And because

Save Your Battery: Turn Off Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and LTE When You Aren’t Using It - cultofmac.com
Several technologies on your iPhone, including Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and cellular data, are made to continually check for signal when you’re out and about. Continual checking requires power, which comes from your iPhone (or iPad, or iPod touch) battery.
It makes sense, then, that turning these different wireless features off when you don’t need them can help your battery last a little longer. Here’s how to do just that.
Bluetooth can be found in your Settings app. Tap it to launch, and then tap again on Bluetooth. Toggle the switch to OFF.
Tap the Settings back arrow and then tap on the Wi-Fi area. Again, tap the toggle switch to OFF.

Apple's WWDC App Subtly Flattens Visual Elements, Developers Should Take Note Of The New Normal - techcrunch.com
Apple’s dedicated app for its Worldwide Developers Conference arrived today, and it offers a look at some of the sessions happening during the event next week, but it also shows off a dramatically different UI compared to past iterations of the app. The changes sound a lot like what’s said to be on tap for a visual refresh in iOS 7. It also might be a good early indication of what Apple will be bringing not only to its own apps, but also what it will expect from those from the developer community, as well.
9to5Mac’s Mark Gurman retweteeted the tweet below, which shows pretty clearly the evolution of the WWDC app

Like most people, I was following Tim Cook’s talk at the D11 conference with great interest. And while it generated a lot of headlines, it became apparent quickly that not much was actually being said. Just to make sure, I went back and watched the entire interview. One thing stuck out above all others:
It was boring.
It’s not just that Cook wouldn’t answer any of the questions about new products and/or services — of course he’s not going to do that — it was that nearly everything that was said had been said before. And that made me wonder, what was the point of Apple even agreeing to do this interview?
My guess is that
