Apple may be testing changes to its iTunes App Store ranking algorithms, which see it taking into account app ratings and other new factors in the App Store Top Chart rankings. Whether or not the changes are more experimental in nature or indicative of a larger overhaul of how apps are ranked in the Top Charts is not yet known. According to countless rumors and MG Siegler’s sources, the gold iPhone 5S isn’t just something we tech bloggers have concocted to keep this summer interesting. It’s real.
Bits and pieces of proof continue to leak out, not least of which are these newly posted images on a Japanese website. Of course, as you can see from the images, the usual “Designed by Apple in California, Assembled in China” fine print that is emblazoned on the black and white models is missing.
However, this casing is clearly unfinished, as the prototype is not yet fully constructed.

A recent posting on Apple’s Web Server notifications page issues credit to Ibrahim Balic, 7Dscan.com and SCANV of Knownsec.com for the discovery of two web security issues. Balic, you may recall, discovered a vulnerability that he later publicly claimed was responsible for the weeks-long outage of Apple’s Developer Center.
The posting was discovered by 9to5Mac.com who claimed that Apple was crediting Balic with reporting the issue that took down the Dev Center.
However, my sources confirm that Balic’s report is not responsible for the outage. The issue that Balic reported had nothing to do with why Apple took down the

As Apple’s September 10th event iPhone event approaches, we’ve learned some additional details and have independently heard some of the already-floating around information regarding the upcoming announcements.

The update comes a week after the previous update and just hours after a report pegged the Beta 6 update for next week. The focus of the small update appears to be on an emergency issue with iTunes in the Cloud which requires a workaround.

Apple announced a new charge trade-in program earlier this month, which gives those with third-party iPhone, iPad, and iPod adapters the chance to take them in and swap them for official ones at a special price. At first, it seemed the program was only available to customers in the U.S. and China, but that’s not the case.
According to a new support document on Apple’s website, those in the U.K., Canada, Australia, Japan, and parts of Europe can also take advantage of the offer.

Apple won a seemingly decisive victory against Samsung in its patent-centric court battle last year, but the legal back-and-forth is far from over. The Cupertino company asked the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals in Washington D.C. to allow a sales ban on certain Samsung devices earlier today, and now the International Trade Commission has ruled that some of Samsung’s older devices violate two of Apple’s patents.
The punishment? A ban on the importation and sale of those devices in the United States, should the decision pass muster during a period of presidential review. President Obama has the option to overrule the ITC’s decision in

The Roku iOS app got another update today. In addition to the previous “Play on Roku” feature that let users stream music and static images to the set top media box, the company has now added the ability to stream video directly from the iOS app, as well.
In a market that includes Apple TV and Google’s nascent Chromecast technology, Roku is making some positive steps to stay relevant.

Android smartphone shipments grew a whopping 73.5 percent between the second quarter of 2012 and Q2 2013, according to research firm IDC’s latest numbers. 187.4 million Android-powered phones shipped in the most recent quarter, representing 79.3 percent of all smartphones shipped during the quarter. The next closest smartphone platform was iOS, which shipped just 31.2 million units, accounting for 13.2 percent of overall share.
Apple’s mobile OS still blew away its next closest competitor (and still grew 20 percent in terms of device shipments year over year), Windows Phone, which saw 8.7 million handsets shipped
