Apple Reportedly Discontinuing Mac Pro Sales In Europe Starting In March - techcrunch.com
Apple’s Mac Pro has been on the chopping block for a long time according to many industry watchers and pundits, and as of March it will actually get the axe in Europe. But the Pro’s debatable market appeal isn’t what’s causing the termination of sales in that region: the existing models simply don’t comply with Europe’s new regulatory standards for consumer electronics, according to 9to5Mac.
Those revised standards go into effect March 1st, and any products that don’t comply will have to be removed from sale. That doesn’t apply to existing stock, so Mac Pros that are already in store inventory could continue to rattle around sales

With each new release of an iPhone, jailbreaking becomes just one step more difficult. Throw in constant OS updates, and it’s amazing the hacker community is able to jailbreak it at all. So, it’s no surprise it has taken more than four months for an official jailbreak to be released for the iPhone 5.
On Sunday, that may change. A group of jailbreakers, known as the Evad3rs, plan to release its jailbreak tool: Evasi0n. The website, which claimed the team is “Processing the GUI”, has a very clean and simple layout. If all goes as planned and Evasi0n is released on

Hold The Phone, I Want My Dick Tracy Watch - techcrunch.com
A few days ago, I read Nilay Patel’s review of the Pebble smartwatch for The Verge. Like many others, I bought a Pebble on Kickstarter, and I can’t wait to try it out myself. But one part of Patel’s review stuck out at me in particular:
Any incoming notification will quietly buzz the Pebble and light up the screen. Frankly, it’s great — being able to see who’s texting, emailing, or calling you without looking at your phone changes the entire dynamic of being connected. The upside is obvious: only reaching for your phone when it’s something important means you reach for your phone much less often. (I particularly enjoy screening calls from my wrist.)

Unlocking A New iPhone Is Now Illegal, But Jailbreaking Is Still Safe — What It All Means For You - cultofmac.com
It can be easy to get “unlocking” and “jailbreaking” confused, but the two terms mean totally different things. Unlocking refers to freeing your phone to work on any carrier instead of just the one you bought it on. Jailbreaking is the process of circumventing Apple’s security measures in iOS to install tweaks, hacks, and mods that aren’t allowed in the App Store.
The U.S. Library of Congress has ruled that it is now illegal for you to unlock your smartphone if it was bought after January 26th, 2013. Carriers can still legally unlock your device for you, but it’s illegal to

Apple’s Next iPad Could Sport A Slimmer Shell, Take A Page From The iPad Mini Playbook - techcrunch.com
Apple’s next iPad might look like an enlarged iPad mini, according to new pictures received by 9to5Mac that claim to represent the device’s new back casing. The pics aren’t “verified,” the blog says, but 9to5Mac’s track record is solid, with another example that it generally posts good info coming earlier this week. And let’s face it, Apple has nowhere to go with the big boy iPad except for slimmer and lighter, if it wants to keep the thing appealing.
The iPad getting a mid-cycle update could suggest that we won’t see a bigger update for the Retina model until later in the year, so

Apple Pulls Vine From App Store’s Featured Section After Porn Showed Up In Editors’ Picks - techcrunch.com
While Apple hasn’t made a peep yet about Vine’s slight porn problem, the App Store has removed the video-sharing app from its Featured Section.
The app launched on Thursday, and found itself in the Featured section of the App Store by Friday. Since, it’s swung to the top of Social in the App Store, and has climbed to the number four free app overall.
But this morning, many new Viners woke up to something unexpected in the Editors’ Picks section of the app: a hardcore porn clip titled “Dildoplay.” In turn, it would appear that the App Store has removed the app from the Featured section of the store. Most apps that get

I like my Retina MacBook Pro, in part because I have the option to switch to extremely high-resolution display modes when I’m way from my home Thunderbolt monitor and want as much screen real estate as I can get. But Apple did a curious thing in OS X Mountain Lion: They removed the option to put a display preferences item in the OS X menu bar. Luckily. third-party developers have stepped up and created a couple of fixes that actually go above and beyond the call of duty.

jOBS Movie Review: a Satisfying Experience - gizmodo.comSeth Kinkaid
Today I saw jOBS at Sundance, the story of a young Steve Jobs, the now legendary co-founder and CEO of Apple Computer. And although I know it may be inaccurate and exaggerated, it was the experience I wanted.
I wasn't sure exactly what I would get, but it turned out to be surprisingly nice. It was... satisfying. It also proved that I could enjoy Ashton Kutcher's acting as Silicon Valley's most prized CEO. Although his performance wasn't perfect, it felt right. The rest of the movie was just as good.
Gizmodo reader Seth Kinkaid was one of the first people to watch jOBS—the first Steve Jobs' biopic starring Ashton Kutcher—at Sundance 2013. This is his review.

Ridiculous Rumors Tout Cheaper, Bigger iPhone 5S. And Multiple Models! Oh My! - techcrunch.com
The latest rumors out of the DigiTimes (a hit-or-miss Chinese blog focused on Apple supply-chain news) claims that Apple is not working on a larger, cheaper version of the iPhone for this year, but rather that it will debut two new 4-inch models of the smartphone.
One is expected to be the iPhone 5S, an upgraded version of the iPhone 5, and the other is expected to be a lower-cost version of the iPhone, perhaps with a plastic cover as opposed to anodized aluminum.
But before we delve any further, let’s remember that this is simply the retraction of one rumor for another, and we know very little until Apple unveils its new products officially.

Apple Reportedly Reduces iPhone 5 LCD Panel Orders From Sharp - techcrunch.com
Japanese newspaper Sankei Biz (link via Google Translate) is reporting that Apple has halved LCD panel orders from Sharp due to lower-than-expected sales of the iPhone 5.
This is the latest indication apparently pointing to the device’s sluggish performance since its launch in September, and comes just three days after Reuters reported that Sharp has slowed production of the 9.7 inch panels used for full-sized iPads.
Earlier this month, the Wall Street Journal reported that Apple cut component orders for the iPhone 5 due to weaker-than-expected demand, with orders for iPhone 5 screens for the January-to-March quarter

4.8-inch iPhone ‘Math’ reports don’t add up - 9to5mac.com
The Commercial Times, with additional information from China Times, seems to claim that Apple is gearing up to release three new iPhone models this year. So far, sounds good. Previous next-generation iPhone-related speculation and reports already point to potential debuts of a smaller, cheaper iPhone, a faster, tweaked iPhone 5, and perhaps a revamped next-generation iPhone.
However, Commercial Times‘ (likely inaccurate) report is calling for a ‘iPhone 5S’ (fine, already rumored), an “iPhone Math” (what?) with a 4.8-inch display, and a third device with a 12-megapixel rear camera. The paper says the first two devices will launch in June, while the

One of the features promised with the Facebook Messenger for iPhone update a few weeks ago was Voice-Over IP calling (Download it here). Facebook promised that in the coming weeks you'd be able to call your friends over a cellular or Wi-Fi data connection instead of using up your plan minutes. The feature is finally rolling out now.

Apple And Amazon Ordered To Talk Settlement In “App Store” Trademark Dispute - techcrunch.com
Apple and Amazon are fighting over made up words, as you may well be aware. Apple takes issue with Amazon’s use of “Appstore,” the name for the online retailer’s marketplace of Android software, which came after Apple had already been using its own App Store branding for a mobile apps market for a couple of years. A judge now says that before the issue actually goes to trial in August, the two will have to try to hammer things out via settlement, according to AllThingsD.
Already, there has been some movement in the case this year. A judge ruled previously that Apple’s claims of false advertising related to the Appstore name

Second Analyst Report Pegs iPhone 5S For Launch Date Sometime Around June 2013 - techcrunch.com
The iPhone 5 wasn’t released all that long ago, but increasingly reports are saying a follow-up could come sooner rather than later. Today, Jeffries analyst Peter Misek said in a report that his supply chain checks anticipate a launch in June/July with a March production start date. The report backs up an earlier claim from Topeka analyst Brian White, who said at the start of January that an iPhone 5S will begin production in March or April for a May/June launch.
These reports are still just analyst predictions, based on research culled from supply chain sources and other channels but generally not sourced

There's a big difference between over-ear headphones and on-ear headphones. Sure, studio-oriented cans like the Sennheiser HD 280, Audio-Technica ATH-M50, or the Sony MDR-V6 produce lovely sound, but they're not the best option for traipsing around the city. That's because they're huge, heavy, and usually come with long, tangle-prone cords. To take them anywhere, you have to bring a bag along.

I spent a lot of time at CES 2013 searching for new audio goodness and one of the cool things I found was IK Multimedia’s latest product called the iRig HD. Not “officially” announced yet and missing a release date, there were still a few demo units at their booth in the South Hall.
The iRig HD is an upgrade to the company’s previous and very popular iRig guitar interface for iOS mobile devices. Essentially, it allows you to plug your guitar or bass directly into your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch and use software to make recordings or affect the sound of your instrument. This HD version sports some new characteristics though:

Rumors have been saying that Apple is gearing up to launch an iTunes music subscription service in 2013. The product has clearly been years in the making, and Steve Jobs was apparently being pitched the idea a decade ago.
Jimmy Iovine is the CEO of Beats, Dr. Dre’s bumpin headphone line. Iovine has a long history in the music industry, and he previously ran Interscope records. Back in the early days of iTunes, Iovine visited Apple to pitch his idea for a Spotify-like music subscription to Steve Jobs.

If you own a relatively recent Android device, it’s likely to support a nifty feature called DLNA, which allows you to stream content directly from your device to a whole host of compatible devices, including televisions, stereos, and Sony’s PlayStation 3. It’s very similar to AirPlay, only it supports a far greater range of devices, and doesn’t require an Apple TV.
Well now you can enjoy DLNA streaming on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch thanks to Skifta, a new iOS app from Qualcomm Atheros.

Apple has announced that app screenshots will be locked in iTunes Connect once an app is approved. New screenshots can only be added when developers submit a binary for an updated to an existing or new app.
This move will help combat a common scam tactic that tricks people into buying fake apps with screenshots stolen from more popular or non-iOS games. Past examples include fake descriptions for various apps titled Halo 4 that were actually just a chess or racing game and a non-functional “Pokemon Yellow” app. Many scam developers managed to get past App Store monitors by using different screenshots when they first submitted

FreedomPop’s 4G case for iPhone delayed by FCC - 9to5mac.com
FreedomPop, the company that makes 4G-capable cases for the iPod touch, announced today that a version of its case compatible with the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S has been delayed by the U.S. Federal Communication Commission’s certification process. FreedomPop reportedly has 5,000 of the cases in the United States, but it cannot ship them to customers until the FCC certifies them.
The devices are stuck in the certification process due to their design that puts the case’s cellular radio directly next to the cellular radio inside of the iPhone. The FCC has never tested a device with this configuration before, and it has had to conduct extensive (and expensive)

Tech Titans In Asia: Apple’s Cook Visits China, While Google’s Schmidt Makes A Stop In North Korea - techcrunch.com
Two top tech executives are currently visiting Asia, but though Eric Schmidt’s trip to North Korea is confusing observers of the authoritarian regime and Google alike, the reasons for Apple CEO Tim Cook’s China sojourn are much more obvious.
Apple CEO Tim Cook met with Miao Wei, minister of China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, yesterday. According to the MIIT’s Web site, the two discussed the Chinese and global tech and telecommunication industry and Apple’s business in China. The MIIT is the regulatory body responsible for the lags in rolling out the iPhone to Chinese consumers, even though

And me, obviously.
To be honest, the gallery, taken with Canon’s new 6G DSLR, doesn’t do it justice. Please, Apple: Here is your next iMac Retina and Thunderbolt display.
These displays aren’t just beautiful. The IGZO technology also uses a fraction of the power required for today’s LCDs.

eBay has issued updates to its iOS apps this week to introduce a number of features that promise to make selling from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch a much more pleasant process. Startups: Keep It Simple, Stupid - techcrunch.com
Why some startups soar to great heights while others stumble and fall is almost impossible to answer without digging into the detail of each, on a case-by-case basis. So many factors affect success — from funding and timing, to experience, execution, competitive landscape and even luck. There is also the strength of the idea itself, and whether the competition is better, faster, stronger than you are.
But strip back some of the complexity and there are some basic overriding principles that make it more or less likely a startup will succeed. And the simplest of all these rules is simplicity itself.

At some point, most of us are going to walk away from our computer while it’s turned on. Sometimes when that happens, family members, roommates, or even complete strangers will decide it’s OK to mess with your computer.
Keycard makes it easy to avoid that issue without having to put your machine to sleep and then wake it back up every time you walk away for a few minutes. By pairing it with your iPhone, iPod, or a host of other devices, your Mac can detect when you walk away and lock the screen, keeping others from being able to access your computer while you’re away.

Yesterday, we ran a big story: Is Apple Plotting A Route To A Waze Acquisition? Rumours On The Road Point To Yes. That’s huge news for a few reasons: Apple rarely makes startup acquisitions — Waze is a hot startup with good buzz — the Apple Maps fiasco — the list goes on. But there’s just one little problem: the deal isn’t actually happening.
That information comes from multiple sources close to the situation. And while Mike Butcher also claimed multiple sources in his original post, you’ll note that he was quick to qualify the information as a “rumor” (or in British parlance — Mike is English — a “rumour”).

The iPhone 6 is expected to be released by the middle of next year. TNW says that “although OS and device data can be faked, the unique IP footprint leading back to Apple’s Cupertino campus leads us to believe that this is not one of those attempts.”
So does this show anything significant, aside from the fact that Apple will continue to regularly push out new iPhone models
