Everyone loves taking pictures. Apple Reportedly Increasing Gold iPhone 5s Production In The Wake Of Huge Launch Demand - techcrunch.com
The gold iPhone 5s (which still seems more “champagne” to me) was a phone that seemed improbable when it was first rumored, but Apple did indeed make it – and consumers seem glad. A report from the Wall Street Journal says that Apple is asking suppliers to increase production of the gold finish iPhone 5s in order to keep up with demand.
Currently, just a few hours after iPhone 5s orders have gone live on the Apple online store, the gold iPhone is the only model that’s showing a shipping time longer than “7 to 10 days”) in the U.S., and it’s not going to make it out to new buyers until October, per the order page.

Apple has increased the size of its download limits on cellular networks to 100MB from 50MB. The change comes as iOS 7 launches to the public as a ~700MB over-the-air upgrade to iPhone and iPad users.
The increase in size was first reported by MacRumors and we subsequently confirmed the new, higher limit.
Apple’s initial download limit for apps was 10MB while not connected to WiFi networks, forcing developers to take extensive measures to ensure that apps scooted in just under the line. This has become especially prevalent among developers of free apps and games. The thinking was that free apps acted as an ‘impulse download’. You are far

The new mobile operating system is a big visual change, and is likely to feel somewhat disorienting to users upgrading from iOS 6, but in most important ways, it’s not that dissimilar from what you’re used to, and many of the changes are definitely for the best.

On Eve Of iOS 7 Launch, Apple Starts Letting Users Install Last Compatible Versions Of Apps - techcrunch.com
The new version of Apple’s mobile OS, iOS 7, is the biggest change since the icon-laden software arrived on the scene to disrupt the competition, all the way back in 2007. The risk for Apple now is that the OS redesign disrupts its own user-base, so here’s one sign of how Cupertino is managing the change: it’s updated the App Store to offer a prompt to iOS devices that aren’t compatible with the latest version/s of iOS enabling them to download the “last compatible version” of the app. The change was spotted by a Reddit user (via The Verge) who had tried installing Instagram on a 2nd-gen iPod Touch.

Apple has a new trick up its sleeve with the iPhone 5s that was talked about on stage during its recent reveal event, but the impact of which won’t be felt until much later when it gets fully taken advantage of by third-party developers. Nearly two years after launch, Siri seems to exit ‘beta’ with iOS 7 - 9to5mac.com
With the iPhone 4S launch nearly two years ago, Apple introduced the Siri voice control system to its customers. At launch, Siri was a gimmicky feature at best, being released with bugs, a highly-computerized voice, sluggish content loading, and unreliable servers. In addition, Siri of 2011 was short on user compatibility, only launching with knowledge of English, French, and German. Apple certainly did not deny the early issues with Siri: the company launched the product in “beta,” a tag that has remained on the software ever since.

A Photographer's Take On The iPhone 5S Camera - techcrunch.com
The iPhone 5S announcement this week was punctuated with a lot of specs and buzzwords. Much of it centered around the new Touch ID fingerprint scanner and the 64-bit processor. But the most intriguing to me was the camera advancements.
Apple has been putting a major focus on the camera in the iPhone for a couple of years now. A recent Apple ad touted that more people take pictures with the iPhone than any other camera. And a while back the iPhone became the number one camera on the photo sharing site Flickr and it has never lost its crown. Despite the proliferation of point-and-shoot cameras with impressive technology and ever-cheaper DSLRs, the smartphone is and will

Forget “Cheap”, The iPhone 5c Is Clearly The iPhone Jony Ive Wanted For iOS 7 - techcrunch.com
The “c” in the iPhone 5c title doesn’t stand for “cheap”. It stands for “clueless”.
As in, we were all clueless in our speculation on Apple’s motivations for creating this device.
(Okay, it actually seems to stand for “color”, but humor me.)
After sitting through Apple’s unveiling today and more importantly, watching the product videos, it seems decidedly more clear to me why Apple actually made the iPhone 5c. I think it comes down to the star of those videos: Jony Ive.
I’ve seen a lot of Jony Ive videos in my day. And to my eye, it sure seems like he’s decidedly more excited about the iPhone 5c than he is the iPhone

Apple built Google Glass-like prototypes, says former Senior VP of iPod division - 9to5mac.com
Tony Fadell, the Nest CEO who was Senior VP of Apple’s division from 2006 to 2008, says that Apple built prototypes of a similar device to Google Glass but “didn’t have time” to turn them into actual products.
Interviewed as part of Fast Company‘s Oral History of Apple Design series, Fadell said:
At Apple, we were always asking, What else can we revolutionize? We looked at video cameras and remote controls. The craziest thing we talked about was something like Google Glass. We said, “What if we make visors, so it’s like you’re sitting in a theater?” I built a bunch of those prototypes. But we

3DMark benchmarking app arrives on iOS, allows cross-platform comparisons - engadget.com
Since there aren't many benchmarking apps for iOS, we totally understand if you resented 3DMark's Android-only release in April. Good thing Futuremark finally launched an iOS counterpart, giving you a way to test hardware and pit the results directly against those of Windows and Android devices. The tool comes with three benchmarking modes that gauge CPU and GPU performance: the basic Ice Storm test, the more demanding Ice Storm Extreme and a new one called Ice Storm Unlimited, which lets you make chip-to-chip comparisons between phones and tablets. 3DMark will work with hardware running iOS 6.0 or higher (except if it's a 4th-gen iPod

Thinkspace, an organization created by sixteen-year-old James Anderson, seeks to “inspire the next generation of app developers” through dedicated coding zones in high schools across the globe. Anderson formally launched Thinkspace this month with campuses in Plymouth and Northern Ireland.
Anderson first came up with the idea for Thinkspace when he became disappointed with the UK educational system’s approach to computer information and related topics. Rather than attempt to change the curriculum, Anderson sought to work around it by creating “Thinkspaces” within schools.

Apple’s next-generation operating system for desktops, OS X Mavericks, is already in the hands of developers, but we likely won’t see version 10.9 make its way to consumer devices ahead of October. Some rumors had suggested Apple might ship the OS at its iPhone even next week, or another time during September, but both 9to5Mac and AllThingsD are now reporting late October for Mavericks’ arrival.

OS X Mavericks Most Likely Arriving In October, Reports Claim, Perhaps Alongside Haswell MacBook Pros - techcrunch.com
Apple’s next-generation operating system for desktops, OS X Mavericks, is already in the hands of developers, but we likely won’t see version 10.9 make its way to consumer devices ahead of October. Will Apple Finally Discontinue The iPod Classic This Year? - cultofmac.com
Having gone without a refresh since 2009, the iPod classic is one of the oldest products still on sale in the Apple Store. Will Apple finally update it this fall to add flash storage and a Lightning connector? Probably not. In fact, some expect the Cupertino company to finally kill it off.
“I don’t see Apple investing any more into the iPod classic, even just to upgrade the connector,” Forrester analyst Charles Golvin told Wired.
It’s not hard to see why Apple is still selling the iPod classic. It’s the only iPod that offers 160GB of storage, which is enough to store up to 40,000 songs, 250 hours of music, or around

Only days away from Apple’s September 10th iPhone event, new photos have come out which claim to show the box for the upcoming iPhone 5S. The same site has also leaked alleged photos of iPhone 5C packaging in the past. Notable here is the tweaked home button design, which appears to ditch the iconic inset square in favor of a ring around the edge.
These new images line up with previous whispers about the fingerprint sensor and also match photos we’ve seen of iPhone 5C packaging, which carry color-coded wallpapers based on the base color of the device itself,

“This is going to sound a little odd,” Ari Weinstein says, “but when I was a kid coding…was a lot harder.”
Ari Weinstein is just 19. He’s about to start as a freshman at MIT after deferring for a year to do a little fooling around. And he’s been playing in Apple’s ecosystem — in one form or another — since he was 11. That was when he took an interest in the iPod Linux project and created an easier way to install the open-source operating system on Apple’s music player.
Weinstein is just one of a growing group of young developers that are choosing Apple’s iOS platform, and specifically the iPhone, as the place where they cut their teeth.

Apple’s supposed next-generation iPad case components are on display in a new high-definition video from Unbox Therapy, showing a design that is clearly inspired by the iPad mini. This agrees with what we’ve heard and seen from previous leaks, but until now it’s been hard to get a solid grasp on just how dramatic the difference is between the current iPad and the one that’s said to be arriving in October or thereabouts to replace it.
The new iPad design looks to shave around 15mm off of the current model in terms of device width, and also looks to shave off some depth, both of which will probably result in

Turning Apple TV Into Ouroboros - techcrunch.com
Apple has been ‘pulling the string’ on the Apple TV for seven years now. Think about that one for a minute: it’s had a set-top box since before the iPhone.
During that time, the landscape of online video entertainment has completely changed, largely as a result of the iPhone, iPad and iTunes Store. While Apple has a long way to go in order to make the Apple TV a decent solution for countries outside of the US, it has made some progress and continues to very slowly iterate on the original premise of an in-home media streaming device.
A large part of that is iCloud, which now allows users to watch any purchases they’ve made from iTunes on any device, including ATV. But

Supposed video of red iPhone 5C hits web, fails to impress - 9to5mac.comIt wouldn’t be hard to put a little red plastic around the edges of an iPhone 5 and do the same thing here, but it is getting some play so we’re posting it for discussion. This could also be an iPhone 5 with the now common iPhone 5C plastic shell slapped on the back.

As Apple’s September 10th iPhone event approaches, a few new photos claiming to show packaged “iPhone 5Cs” and accompanying materials have surfaced online. The first photo comes from website iApps.im, and it purports to show several “iPhone 5C” units in packaging. But after a discussion with Rob Coneybeer, co-founder of Shasta Ventures, we started to think about the ways that robots, or robot-type devices, are already starting to infiltrate our lives: Industrial robots, robotic vehicles, robotic devices in the home, and more.

Parallels’ new iPad app ‘Access’ makes your Mac apps feel like native iOS apps - 9to5mac.com
For years, there have been iPad applications that allow remote access to your Mac from anywhere in the world. Parallels Mobile, for example, was launched back in 2011 and allowed you to view your Mac and Windows virtual machines on your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad (and later discontinued). But these apps have always been a huge turn-off for the majority of users, since OS X isn’t built for touch screens. Trying to press small buttons, editing text, scrolling through pages and other flukes have made it impossible to use your Mac from an iOS device for an extended amount of time.
But now, Parallels has solved all of these problems and

An iPhone may fall under the generic heading of a mobile phone, but a combination of the convenience of apps and the ability to use the iPhone as a remote for everything from playing a movie to changing the color of our lighting means that many of us use them at home almost as much as we do when out & about.
In a patent published today, Apple explores the potential of the iPhone to act as an intelligent remote with the kind of functionality typically associated with high-end home automation setups. The idea is based around the concept of

Hammo Stereo Headphones: High Definition Audio That Looks As Good As It Sounds - cultofmac.com
Every time I see someone wearing over-ear headphones out in public, I can’t help but think of the scene in the “Starsky & Hutch” film where Ben Stiller is running along the beach listening to “Old Days” by Chicago. There’s something odd about over-ear headphones being worn not only in that situation – but really in any public situation. To me, earbuds or in-ear headphones work best in public. And that’s not because of sound quality. It’s because they are a lot more discreet.
That said, if you’re up to wearing over-ear headphones anytime and anywhere, then Cult of Mac Deals is offering Hammo Stereo Headphones for 43%

The slideshow gives us a fairly sanitized peek inside a number of recycling facilities, including a few photos of the decades-old Minitel recycling effort that decommissioned hundreds of thousands of old terminals that were still in use in France until 2012. I would argue that of all the items shown in the slideshow, the Minitel was the most successful: it offered something for a set of specific users all the way up to

Apple's App Store Rankings Algorithm Changed To Consider Ratings, And Possibly Engagement - techcrunch.com
Apple may be testing changes to its iTunes App Store ranking algorithms, which see it taking into account app ratings and other new factors in the App Store Top Chart rankings. Whether or not the changes are more experimental in nature or indicative of a larger overhaul of how apps are ranked in the Top Charts is not yet known. However, these changes have resulted in apps losing and gaining in position without a corresponding increase or decrease in app downloads.
Boston-based app marketing startup Fiksu was the first to notice this trend in late July, having seen apps with ratings of four stars or more receiving a ranking

Now you can skip that extra step, because PNY now makes a sawn-off SD card that does the same job – without an adapter.
It’s called StoreEDGE and comes in 64GB and 128GB flavors. To put that in perspective, my first iBook (the white “icebook” that came out right after the toilet-seat iBook) had a 10GB HDD, and my iPod a massive 15GB.

Alleged Gold iPhone 5S Photos Leak - techcrunch.com
Gold is the new black.
According to countless rumors and MG Siegler’s sources, the gold iPhone 5S isn’t just something we tech bloggers have concocted to keep this summer interesting. It’s real.
Bits and pieces of proof continue to leak out, not least of which are these newly posted images on a Japanese website. Of course, as you can see from the images, the usual “Designed by Apple in California, Assembled in China” fine print that is emblazoned on the black and white models is missing.
However, this casing is clearly unfinished, as the prototype is not yet fully constructed.
A gold iPhone has left a number of us scratching our heads. Apple is all about keeping it simple

Curvy Dock Fits Any iPhone, In Any Case, Ever - cultofmac.com
Every time I use my iPhone 5, I’m less and less convinced that it even needs a dock. It’s far easier to use the phone when it’s laying flat on my desk than when it’s propped up at a steep angle. The only place I’d like one is on my nightstand, and as I don’t have a nightstand that option is out. However, many people want docks, and of these many of them keep their iPhones in fat, ugly protective cases. The Sarvi Dock is for them.
First, lets deal with the esthetic issue: The Sarvi is a beautiful curving sculpture which will look amazing with the naked iPhone inside/atop it. But the kind of people who buy Otterbox and LifeProof cases perhaps don’t care for such

Apple Credits Security Researcher Balic, But Not For Vulnerability Related To Developer Center - techcrunch.com
A recent posting on Apple’s Web Server notifications page issues credit to Ibrahim Balic, 7Dscan.com and SCANV of Knownsec.com for the discovery of two web security issues. Balic, you may recall, discovered a vulnerability that he later publicly claimed was responsible for the weeks-long outage of Apple’s Developer Center.
The posting was discovered by 9to5Mac.com who claimed that Apple was crediting Balic with reporting the issue that took down the Dev Center.
However, my sources confirm that Balic’s report is not responsible for the outage. The issue that Balic reported had nothing to do with why Apple took down the

Apple Patents 3D Gesture Control Via Hover-Based Input On Touchscreen Devices Like The iPad - techcrunch.com
Apple has had a new patent published by the USPTO today (via AppleInsider), and it’s one that details an extension of multi-touch input that would take gestures above the screen, allowing for 3D manipulation of objects via 3D gesture inputs. Fitting that I should just finish trashing 3D gesture control as a concept, before Apple shows a context-specific means of using it that might actually make sense.
The system Apple envisions would work in tandem with its existing multi-touch input controls on devices like the iPad, allowing a user to lift their fingers off of the screen in order to sort of pull out a 3D shape from a

Apple Will Ship Both A “High-End And Low-End” iPhone In September, WSJ Reports - techcrunch.com
Apple is going to ship new iPhones next month – two different new variants, including a “low-end” and a “high-end” variant, according to a new Wall Street Journal report today. At this stage, we’ve seen lots to suggest that Apple would indeed announce two versions of the iPhone at its rumored event on September 10, but the WSJ makes it a pretty sure bet.
The WSJ doesn’t get into specifics about what we’ll see from new iPhones, but it’s likely that we’ll get the iPhone 5S, which would follow in the footsteps of the iPhone 5 with a metal body similar to the previous design (with a new double-flash for the camera

As Apple’s September 10th event iPhone event approaches, we’ve learned some additional details and have independently heard some of the already-floating around information regarding the upcoming announcements.
We’ve long been expecting Apple to launch an iPhone 5S at this upcoming event, an iPhone that looks almost identical to the iPhone 5, but adds improved internals. For past iPhone “S” upgrades, like the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4S, Apple has retained the same design and colors as the previous models. Black and white units in both of those cases.

Why a Gold iPhone 5S Actually Makes Sense - gizmodo.comFull disclosure: We've been seeing the gold iPhone rumors for weeks now, but have largely been brushing them aside. Fake Apple rumors are as easy to come by as tangled EarPod cords this close to a new product launch, and this one in particular seemed too outlandish, too... tacky. But gold iPhone reports have reached that saturation point—even AllThingsD is confirming— where they can't be ignored anymore. Especially considering how much sense it all makes.

“Gold? All over?” M asks James Bond upon hearing how Jill Masterson died in 1964′s Goldfinger. While Bond goes on to explain that the gold coating on Ms. Masterson caused her to die of “skin suffocation”, the same fate will not befall the next iPhone. But only because the iPhone will not require oxygen.
Yes, there will be a gold iPhone.
That’s the latest I’m hearing from multiple sources after several weeks of rumors and possible component leaks suggesting the same thing. At first, I couldn’t believe Apple would break from the tradition of offering the simple choice: black and white (or “slate” and “silver” if you prefer for the iPhone

Review: ‘Jobs’ movie is an intriguing, though exaggerated, peek into Apple’s early years - 9to5mac.com
I’ll admit, when I first heard that Ashton Kutcher would be the star of a movie about Steve Jobs, I was less than thrilled. How could someone from That 70′s Show ever accurately portray one of the most influential figures in technology of all time? These negative thoughts in mind, I was pleasantly surprised with ‘Jobs’, which opened nationwide yesterday.
Overview
‘Jobs’ opens with Steve walking onstage in 2001 to introduce the original iPod at Apple’s Town Hall. I was nervous right away. While Ashton sure sounded, walked, and looked like Steve, the entire scene
