Can you imagine the conversation you would have with a child, hell, a tween, about this coffee table? "You see, son. Before the cloud and usb sticks. Before hard drives and iPhones and Androids. Before the iPod and even before the CD player, there was something called the floppy disk. And it stored 1.44MB. Yeah, I know. You sext bigger files than that. But the thing is, people actually used the floppy disk like we use flash drives today!"
Tween: So why would someone make a coffee table that's a floppy disk? If someone made a usb stick coffee table, I'd think they were dumb. Was the disk actually floppy?

Using its clever advertising tactics, Apple has begun advertising its 7.85-inch iPad mini in several print magazines. As seen on the cover of the New Yorker above and TIME below, the ads highlight the device’s small, compact design and also show how a user can access the same magazine content from Apple’s Newsstand feature. The original Air Display is a great way to add a temporary second screen to any laptop or desktop Macintosh. It’s also super easy to set up and use, as we told you in an iOS tip a while back.
Unfortunately, it’s also a bit on the spendy side. While $10 really isn’t that much to spend for quality software that lets your Mac use an iPad as a second monitor, some folks might not want to spend that much without giving it a good try first.
Lucky for this group of folks, developer Avatron has recently released Air Display Free, an iOS app that lets you use your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch

The company has now confirmed, however, that Vice City will hit the App Store and Google Play on December 6, priced at $4.99.

Last time we checked in with Apple’s ongoing court battle with Samsung in the upcoming Galaxy Nexus case, which will be tried by the same court that awarded Apple $1.05 billion in damages this past summer, Apple was adding the latest Samsung devices to the suit. It is currently uncertain if Siri will be available, if it goes past the early testing stages, in OS X 10.9 for all users. Siri on iOS devices is tied specifically to certain, newer iPhones, iPads, and iPod touches, so it is possible that Apple will make a similar decision

VeriFone Battles Back Against Square, PayPal With New Technology Partnerships And More - techcrunch.com
VeriFone is no small player in the payments world—the company, which is worth over $3 billion, is actually the largest provider of in-store credit card processing payments terminals in the U.S. But faced with the competitive strength of fast growing mobile payments company Square, as well as other players like PayPal, VeriFone is currently in an uphill battle to prove that it can be part of the future of payments for both retailers and consumers. We sat down With David Talach, the company’s head of strategic partnerships, and former head of product, to discuss how VeriFone plans to turn things around.

Two years ago, I ditched the MacBook Pro as my main machine to switch over to a MacBook Air. I loved my Pro (which was only six months old at the time) but the new Airs were simply that good. Fast forward to six months ago, when Apple finally made the Pro compelling

Samsung Official Reportedly Denies 20% Processor Price Hike For Apple - techcrunch.comApple may not be getting squeezed by a Samsung pricing change as previously reported, according to new info from Seoul-based newspaper The Hankyoreh. The paper received word from an unnamed Samsung official who said that pricing is established at the outset of every year, and remains fairly inflexible throughout, meaning a sudden, dramatic rise isn’t even necessarily possible given the arrangements between the two companies.

iPad Mini Isn’t Cannibalizing iPads, It’s Killing PCs Faster - cultofmac.com
Apple is not a company that is afraid to introduce a product that will cannibalize other Apple products. No one buys iPod Classics anymore, they buy an iPod Touch or iPhone. The MacBook Air cannibalized sales of regular MacBooks. And many assumed the iPad mini would cannibalize sales of the iPad, but that assumption is false.
Some analysts believed the iPad mini would cannibalize sales of the iPad by a rate of 10 to 20 percent. A new survey by Cowen and Co. shows that while the iPad mini has been selling well, it hasn’t been cannibalized its bigger sibling, but it is killing PC sales.Cowen and Co. surveyed 1,225 U.S. adults and found that 12 percent

Whoops! Apple’s Website Claims The New iPad Is Thinner Than A Penny - cultofmac.com
Every time Apple introduces a new product they love to compare it to a common object that shows just how magically small it is. The MacBook Air fits inside an envelope. The iPod Classic is the size of a deck of cards. The iPad mini is thinner than a pencil. And the 4th generation iPad with Retina display is thinner than a penny! Wait, what?
A typo on Apple’s website says that the depth of the iPad is .37mm, which would make it about as thick as four sheets of paper copy. For sake of comparison a penny has a depth of 1.57mm, so the new iPad is hella skinny. Obviously the image should show .37 inches thick, not millimeters. We’re just surprised

Report: Drops in Apple’s share price historically followed by surge in earnings growth - 9to5mac.com
Back in October, Apple stock dropped below 600 the first time since July. Since then, following a number of new product launches, AAPL has continued falling and today only sits slightly higher than last week at roughly 550 per share and a market cap of 518B. While many have pointed to uncertainty regarding new product launches and executive level changes as the cause of Apple’s falling share price, no one quite has a definitive answer for why AAPL has hit a nearly 6 month low. In a report today titled “A dramatic reading of Apple’s share price”, Asymco analyst Horace Dediu might have the answer.

“Um, everything.”
Thus began my experience at a local mall buying a Microsoft Surface.
Yes, I bought a Surface — me, the lover of all things Apple and perhaps the biggest fan of the iPad out there. It’s important for me to have the competitive landscape context for my continued musings on Apple’s tablets. It’s the same reason why I played around with and reviewed the Nexus 7, which I liked quite a bit. And, if something is the best, I will use it — made by Apple or not. Shocking for some of you to read perhaps, but the truth.

Why 2012 Has Been Apple’s Most Important Year Ever - cultofmac.com
With the absence of Steve Jobs looming in the background, Tim Cook and his team faced a mountain of questions as they marched into 2012. Who would be the visionary now? Would the iPhone continue to be successful? What’s going to happen to the Mac now that the iPad has become a beast of its own?
The most important question Apple faced going into 2012 was whether they could maintain their supremacy. With competitors closing the gap, Apple doesn’t have Steve Jobs’s vision, charisma, or negotiating prowess anymore, and 2012 has been the year to prove that Apple can endure. Does Apple’s HTC Agreement Indicate A Softening Of Its Approach To Patent Litigation? - techcrunch.comApple and HTC today announced jointly a settlement of all ongoing patent litigation between the two, in a licensing agreement with a 10-year term, any further terms of which were not released. The companies both released canned statements from execs expressing their pleasure at the arrangement and both mentioning “innovation” as key goals going forward. Many will be wondering: Might this be a sign that Apple’s hard-line stance with regards to its IP and patent litigation may be experiencing a general softening, and might we then see similar agreements coming soon in the more bitter rivalry between Apple and Samsung?

For most of its life-cycle, the phone has been unavailable in the Mainland except through the grey market. Now that Apple is allowed to sell units in Shenzhen, however, it’s gotten amazingly strict on sales per-person.
The primary limit is on walk-in sales. Users cannot buy iPhones at the store and instead are limited to picking one up per-day, per-customer. You can also only buy ten iPhones per credit card and you can buy limited amounts using gift cards, a loophole the grey market discovered early on.

Speaking at the GigaOM Roadmap conference, Systrom said there were nearly one million photos on Instagram with the #Sandy hastag, making it the largest event documented by ordinary people using their cellphones.
“Sandy was a really interesting event for us,” said Systrom, who grew up on the east coast. “Sandy was the single largest event captured on

A Touchscreen iMac Might Be Impractical, But It Would Look Awesome In The New iPad Mini Ad - cultofmac.com
The iMac touch might be impractical, but it looks good in the new iPad mini commercial.
Steve Jobs said that touchscreen desktops just don’t work, pretty much ruling out the possibility of a touchscreen iMac in the future. But he also said that tablets under ten inches don’t work, and his company is now selling the awesome iPad mini. There’s every chance, then, that we’ll see an ‘iMac touch’ someday, and it’ll fit in perfectly alongside Apple’s iOS devices — as this awesome concept commercial demonstrates.

Come iOS 6.1, Siri Will Be Able To Help You Purchase Movie Tickets - techcrunch.comSiri got nice little boost a few weeks ago when she (or he, depending on your locale) was updated to handle sports information, restaurant reservations and movie listings, but it seems the virtual assistant’s faculty with films will soon extend beyond just rattling off showtimes. According to a handful of images obtained by 9to5Mac, Siri will be able to help users buy movie tickets once iOS 6.1 hits the streets.
It’s perhaps a no-duh next step for Apple — Siri can already do some of the heavy lifting for coordinating dinners, and adding movies to the list could do wonders for the country’s feckless daters. Sadly, you won’t be able to sweet-talk Siri

The iPad Mini Is The Ideal Second Screen Companion - techcrunch.comOne thing that’s become apparent about the iPad mini during my past few days with it is just how well it fills the role of a second-screen device. The iPhone and the iPad both have their merits as a companion while lounging around and watching TV, but the iPad mini hits the sweet spot of portability, power and connectivity for that use case. Fellow TC writer MG Siegler already explained why he thinks the iPad mini will eventually overtake the full-sized iPad as the sales leader for Apple, and I agree 100 percent, but zeroing in on its second screen suitability might help convince those who still doubt that the smaller iPad will

Where The iPad Mini Fits On My Digital Tool Belt - techcrunch.comHappy iPad mini day. Since my review a few days ago, by far the number one question I’ve been asked about the device is: how does it fit into my life? Do I really need another iPad — let alone a smaller, less powerful one with a non-retina screen? Will I use it alongside the regular iPad? What about alongside a MacBook? Instead of those devices?
This question keeps coming up, of course, because everyone is trying to understand how the iPad mini might fit into their lives — or if it will at all. Granted, I’ve only been using one for a little over a week, but I think I already have a pretty good sense of where it will fit into my life.
Caveat emptor: I’m not

The iPhone 5 is the best camera Apple has ever made (OK, maybe the second-best), so why not dress it like one of the best film cameras ever made?
That’s just what PetaPixel’s Leica skin will do, turning your long, thin iPhone into a long, thin fake rangefinder.
The skin adds negligible thickness or weight to the iPhone, whilst still protecting the back from scratches and nicks. It seems odd to be protecting the rear of a $600 phone with the facsimile of a $6,000+ camera. It’s like keeping a stack of old coins and keys inside a box made from six iPod Nanos (old shape, so the squares will tesselate). With the screens facing
