Google’s New Voice Search Versus Apple’s Siri
When Google announced Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean), they showed off the new voice actions as well as search cards. Naturally, everyone soon became curious about how the new voice actions compared to its Apple competitor and voice assistant Siri. While most Androidians didn’t have a spare iPhone 4S on hand, one blogger for TechnoBuffalo did, and was kind enough to put them to the test.
While this is just a quick comparison between Siri and the preview build of Android 4.1, you’ll see Google’s new voice search is quite impressive and for all intents and purposes, performs faster. We’ll have to see a few more in-depth head-to-heads, but this round

LunaTik, the creators of the famously well-funded TikTok iPod nano watch band, have launched a pair of well-designed and well-functioning styluses, optimized for iOS devices.
We’ve been using the LunaTik Stylus and the performance of the stylus is very precise. Our tests were conducted by playing around the iPad operating system, but the true results come via an app like Paper.
This precise stylus also doubles a real ink pen, making it versatile. The pen, itself, works like your standard ink pen. It’s nothing too special alone, but the cool part is that it’s not only your physical paper pen, but your virtual paper pen.

Apple lands preliminary ban against Samsung Galaxy Nexus in the US (update: search patent the key) It hasn't been Samsung's best week. Just days after Judge Lucy Koh granted a preliminary ban on sales of the Galaxy Tab 10.1, she's following it up with a similar granted request on the Galaxy Nexus. Judge Koh had already signaled that she thought Apple's lawsuit over four patents might have merit, but it's only now that she's deciding the potential damage is worth halting sales of the phone until there's a final trial verdict. Samsung will no doubt try to appeal the dispute, which centers on Android 4.0's slide-to-unlock mechanism (among other elements), but there's a lot more urgency here than with the outgoing Tab 10.1: the Galaxy Nexus is

Google Bows To Apple: Chrome On iOS Will Use Apple’s Slow UIWebView To Render Web Pages
Google is launching Chrome for iOS today. Many pundits assumed that Google was holding back Chrome from iOS because it couldn’t use its own rendering engine, however, Google just told us that Chrome will actually use the same rendering engine that Apple makes available to every other third-party developer on iOS.
Apple famously only makes a sandboxed, slower version of its rendering engine available to developers. What’s slowing this engine down is that , for security reasons (at least that’s what Apple says), third-party developers don’t get direct access to Apple’s Nitro JavaScript engine. According to some developers, UIWebView

Apple Wins In Samsung Galaxy Tab Case (For Now)
Judge Lucy Koh handed Apple an injunction against Samsung selling their Galaxy Tab 10.1 in the US in the latest round of legal warfare between the two companies. Her decision comes after her previous denial of Apple’s request as well as a federal appeals court ruling for her to reconsider the request.
Judge Koh’s decision to stop Samsung from selling its tablet is a significant win in Apple’s case. Apple takes the position that the Tab infringes on several of Apple’s iPad patents.
“Although Samsung has a right to compete, it does not have a right to compete unfairly, by flooding the market with infringing products,” wrote Judge Koh in her decision.

Apple is heavily promoting accessibility features in iOS 6.
With every iteration of iOS, Apple provides more and more accessibility features to its users to make iOS devices open to more people than ever before. iOS 6 includes something big. Guided Access is essentially a tool that allows you to restrict certain areas of your screen and physical buttons in order to make the device easier to use for someone with a disability, or for younger children.
Guided access can even be used in the classroom, to stop children from exiting the current app while taking a test. It’s a really neat feature, and in my opinion, one of the most overlooked. With iOS 6 beta 2,

Interesting Theory: New iPhone 5 Dock Connector Could Be Compatible With Micro-USB Here is an interesting theory: the new dock connector in Apple's new iPhone 2012 could be a 19-pin port that would be mechanically and electrically compatible with the micro-USB standard. I don't know what it would be like, but I love the idea.
The theory is that Apple would have engineered this new dock connector in order to comply with the European Union directive to standardize chargers around micro-USB. Is Apple already juicing its App Store search results with Chomp acquisition? It’s no secret that Apple’s search results within its App Store on both the iOS and Mac don’t always turn up the best results. In return, many hoped that with Apple’s recent acquisition of app search engine Chomp, revealed in February, it would start leading to better results. That time may now be here.
TechCrunch reported earlier this afternoon that developers of popular, high quality apps, with good ratings have seen better search results for their apps — which certainly makes it sound like Chomp is behind the technical change. Chomp’s technology has been described to search for what apps can do, and not keywords and

Klipsch Image One Headphones: The Best Little Big Headphones Around
While other manufacturers might tart up their headphones with loud colors, obnoxious logos and frills, the Klipsch Image One ($150) drops all extraneous nonsense in favor of making you happy through its three impressive strengths: perfomance, comfort and portability — a triple threat that makes these headphones a contender for best traveling companion.
Aesthetics:
Klipsch seems to think that people buying the Image One are more concerned with listening to music than grabbing the attention of the hottie over at the next table. As such, these might bag the Most Boring Headphones Award; this may or may not sit well with you. The understated, classy look

What Resolution to Expect From Apple's Future Retina Devices Now that the high-resolution retina display has hit the MacBook Pro, it's almost certain we'll see a retina display on a MacBook Air sometime in the future. But what will these displays look like? GDGT thinks it knows.
It would be simple enough to assume that like the MacBook Pro, the retina displays on 11-inch and 13-inch MacBook Airs will be twice the resolution of the current models. GDGT crunched the numbers, and realized that because the MacBook Air already has a relatively high pixel density, they'll likely follow a different path. Are you ready for a 13-inch MBA with a whopping 2560 x 1600 resolution? We are. Head over to GDGT for more

Apple’s Inspiration For iBooks Price-fixing? The French
French publishing and price-fixing laws might have been the model for Apple’s iBookstore price-fixing
One of the ironic twists about the anti-trust lawsuits against Apple and the major publishing companies is that Apple’s entrance into the ebook market actually broke Amazon’s virtual monopoly on the ebook business. In the process, publishers gained the ability to control ebook pricing, which can be seen as actually encouraging competition in the industry.
While the U.S. Department of Justice and attorneys general from many states are pursuing lawsuits around the matter, not every country would see the situation in the same terms as the U.S. government. In France,

Hitachi, NEC lead 70-strong coalition pitching iPad, iPhone for the business crowd The Japanese must have more of a thing for Apple than we thought. A group of 70 local companies, led by heavyweights such as Hitachi and NEC, wants to spur iPad and iPhone app development for the corporate world. Along with helping to get the apps built in the first place, the alliance could help spread the work abroad. Members have even said they'll press Apple to get more information for writing business apps, although we wish them the best of success on that front -- Apple isn't exactly known for letting developers learn more about iOS' inner workings. 5 Microsoft Surface Questions That Still Need Answers Microsoft threw one hell of a party tonight; its pair of Microsoft Surface devices could be one of the biggest jumps forward in product design in recent memory. Could, because there's still so much we don't know. And Microsoft's not sharing.

Is mobile data built in?
One point that went glaringly omitted during tonight's presentation: data. Specifically, will either the RT or Intel version of Microsoft Surface come in a 4G edition? Wi-Fi is fine for most, but if you're pushing the business angle—which Microsoft very vocally was—online anywhere

Microsoft today officially announced their new tablet, Surface for Windows, in two flavors, one with ARM chips (just like the iPad) and one with Intel chips, like standard laptops, including Macbooks. This is Microsoft directly competing with Apple for the iPad market, for sure.

WWDC this past week confirmed that Apple is as strong as ever. The company’s steady stream of new products and announcements are a good indication that it’s business as usual. But when will Apple face its first real post-Steve Jobs test? It’s hard to say but not anytime soon.

Apple, Apple, Apple, Apple and Apple Let's be real here: the week's news was dominated by Apple's announcements: the new MacBook Pro, iOS 6, and Mountain Lion. And while almost everything else was irrelevant this week, there were a couple of fun posts that still made waves. Here are our top stories.
Photos of Mysterious UFO-Shaped Object Sunk In Baltic Sea
Last year, a mysterious UFO-shaped 60-foot disc was discovered in the bottom of the Baltic sea by a Swedish ocean exploration team using sonar. Now, that same team has managed to get near it and take photographs. According to diver Stefan Hogeborn, it's unlike anything they've ever seen. More »

AOC Aire iPlay desktop LCD docks iPhones and iPods, rocks the joint (modestly) AOC has a bit of a long-term memory issue: it claims the Aire iPlay E2343Fi is the first computer monitor to have a built-in iPhone and iPod docking station. Nope. But don't let that deter you from checking out the new 23-inch LCD, whose cradle in the base will both keep your Apple gear topped up as well as play movies and music through the display. The 10-watt speakers won't exactly bring the house down, though they will let you take the headphones off. As an actual computer display, it's a typical TN-based panel with a 1080p resolution, a quick 2ms pixel response time and a boldly claimed 50,000,000:1 dynamic contrast

Will podcasts receive a separate app in iOS 6? Reports are abound that a section for podcasts is nowhere to be found in the latest beta version of iTunes for iOS 6. Given its beta status, it's easy to dismiss the exclusion as functionality that's yet to be baked in, but Peter Kafka of AllThingsD believes that Apple has something entirely different in mind. According to his sources, podcasts are set to receive a new home within a separate app of iOS 6. If true, this would provide one central hub for podcasts, as opposed to Apple's current scheme where they're discovered and downloaded in the iTunes app, then played within the Music app -- a little disjointed, but it's the setup we've come to know. Kafka's sources go on to state

Why Retina Isn’t Enough
The new Retina MacBook Pros are only Apple’s first step towards the living display of the future.
Apple’s new MacBook Pro follows the fine tradition of the iPhone 4 and third-gen iPad in that it has a super high-resolution Retina display: a 2880 x 1800 panel with an amazing 220 pixels packed in per inch.
It’s an incredible display. In fact, it’s such an incredible display that it actually has about one million, seven hundred thousand pixels more than it needs to satisfy Apple’s definition of Retina, leading some to claim that those pixels are all going to waste.
Nothing could be further from the truth.

Apple really wants you to buy into their beautiful Retina display future. So much so, that if customers want to buy an old style MacBook Pro with the same specs as the new MacBook Pro with Retina display, they’re going to have to pay an extra $300 to get it. That extra $300 comes with an optical drive, one extra pound of aluminum, and a lower resolution screen, just so the fatty MacBook Pro can keep up with its slimmer sister everyone’s drooling over, but hey, at least you’ll still have an Ethernet port.

Watch This Happy, Happy Man Refurbish An Old Apple II
This charming man, Todd Harrison, bought a used Apple II and some drives from Ebay and did what any self-respecting geek would do: he gave them the attention and respect they deserved, cleaning all the parts and getting it ready to run some BASIC again.
The machines were in pretty rough shape. He powered the CPU on and it seemed to fry a little and as he dug through the box he found packing peanuts in the casings and a number of special treats including a Hayes Microcomputer modem. Todd grabbed some rubbing alcohol and some Clorox and got to work. Why? Because he loved Apple IIs.

Mac Pro refresh irks Andy Hertzfeld, Apple confirms revisions 'likely' in 2013 (update) Along with the introduction of new MacBook Air and MacBook Pro computers, Apple yesterday introduced a new swath of Mac Pro desktops. The introduction was a quiet one for sure, and WWDC attendees of Tim Cook's keynote were none the wiser. It's hard to fault Apple for the decision, as the upgrade was modest at best, but that's exactly what has most upset Andy Hertzfeld, one of the Mac's original designers. Now an employee of Google, Hertzfeld directed harsh criticism at Apple. The following is an excerpt from his Google+ profile: "The specs for the "new" Mac Pro had hardly changed, except for a tiny, inconsequential processor clock bump. Still no

Why Does Apple Inspire So Much Hate?
The lovefest known as the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference starts Monday. As with any such event that involves Apple announcing new products, the global outpouring of love will be matched by a rising outpouring of hate.
Some people hate Apple. Other people hate people who hate Apple. Many of these haters have turned pro, leading to a lucrative “hater industrial complex.”
I know, because I’ve been the target of hate from both sides. I’m on the hate list of both the most extreme anti-Apple haters and pro-Apple haters.

The Gillmor Gang — Danny Sullivan, Dan Farber, Dan Taschek, and Dan Gillmor — no, that’s not right. Steve Gillmor, Steve Taschek… No. Without Scoble, we have little time to get to the point, which this week is Google’s Do As Much Evil as Possible Tour. @dannysullivan returns with a 20 minute diatribe on paid inclusion, whatever that means.
Without Kevin Marks, we have to fend for ourselves until @stevegillmor picks a fight about Google’s war with Apple and its consequences for Google +. In rebuttal, Danny ends up proving @stevegillmor even more right than usual. Hovering just off camera is the sense that with all this talent and possibility, shouldn’t these guys work together as they did

Apple alternative to UDID may come soon, track app use without pesky privacy issues Apple has already provided a few clues as to what it's going to put on the plate for developers at WWDC. One change that's unlikely to be touted at the keynote, or even the entire conference, could prove to be the most important for app writers: an alternative to the UDID (Unique Device Identifier) that Apple started phasing out a year ago. If Wall Street Journal tipsters are right, the hardware-specific ID will be replaced with tagging independent of any one iPad or iPhone, such as a number sequence. The system as it's teased would let developers track user behavior and improve their apps without spooking users worried that Apple, or someone

Project Magenta is Linux-based mobile OS that aims to replicate iOS on generic hardware.
Without getting into too many details, here’s what little is known about this Open Source Magenta Project:
Magenta is an implementation of Darwin/BSD on top of the Linux kernel. It is made up of a number of kernel and userland components that work together. It is fully binary compatible with iPhone OS 5.0 (as in, it uses the same binary format).
It runs on ARM 7 Hardware currently. But what’s the goal?
The final goal is probably recreating the iPhone OS 1.0 stack. I think this is a pretty feasible goal, considering the fact that there are so many open source libs that can be used to replace the proprietary libs used by Apple. Just as an

IDC: Nokia moved just 2.2 million Lumias this winter, but stay tuned Although we know that Nokia had a wince-inducing first quarter, the company was hush hush on how many of its Windows Phone-packing Lumias had shipped out. We still don't have official word, but IDC estimates that Nokia delivered 2.2 million of the devices to shops (not necessarily to customers) between January and March. If the total is accurate, Lumias would represent less than a tenth of the 11.9 million smartphones shipped by Espoo over the season and wouldn't have Apple or Samsung quaking in their boots just yet. The research team is careful to warn that the spring and summer will be the real litmus tests: a healthy Lumia 900 launch in the US could easily

Apple Wins MacBook Air Patent That Could Keep Ultrabooks Off The Shelves
The wedge design of the MacBook Air has been patented by Apple, meaning that the Cupertino company now owns the rights to “the distinctive wedge or teardrop profile” of the sexy notebook. Apple’s D296 patent means that the MacBook Air has solidified the tapered, wedge-like design for its class of computer.
Instead of focusing on concrete details, the new patent covers the general aesthetic of the MacBook Air’s design. Over the past year or so, dozens of laptops, dubbed “Ultrabooks,” have been copying the metallic look and feel of the Air. Could this new patent mean that Apple is setting its legal sights on Ultrabook competitors?

How Streaming Music Will Change Culture for the Better Forget, for the moment, about how much Spotify pays out to artists.
Focus instead on the nature of those payouts.
In the olden days (i.e. 20 years ago), recording artists had to convince you to fall for their music once - just long enough to buy a CD. Since the inception of pop music as a physical format, this need to impress the music buyer for a short length of time gave record labels a big incentive to look for one-hit-wonders capable of moving product quickly. (It also meant I used to walk home with lots of terrible music I never listened to again.) Granted, labels often put considerable effort into grooming those artists for a full career, because it's easier to sell music when

Dear Eric Schmidt, It’s Been 6 Months — Where Are Those iOS-Slaying Android Exclusive Apps?
Flashback to December 6, 2011: Google Chairman Eric Schmidt is on stage at LeWeb in Paris and is asked by an audience member why most application developers still choose to develop for iOS first rather than Android? Schmidt’s response:
“Six months from now you’ll say the opposite. Because ultimately applications vendors are driven by volume. And the volume is favored by the open approach that Google is taking.”
Well, Mr. Schmidt, it’s been six months. And? Nope.
No surprise here. As I wrote at the time:
Of course, my stance is going to be that there’s no way he’s going to be right about that. Not a chance.

Apple lets Airfoil back into the App Store, without its coolest featureLast Month, Apple removed Rogue Amoeba’s Airfoil from the App Store shortly after it began offering the ability to AirPlay music from one iOS device to another – effectively making your old iPod touch an AirPlay speaker. Some thought the app removal was due to use of private APIs. Apple gave a statement on the matter:
The feature in question permits any iOS device running the app to play back audio beamed from a variety of sources using Apple’s AirPlay wireless streaming protocol. Apple presently only allows designated products to act in this capacity — such as the Apple TV and (often expensive) AirPlay-enabled third-party hardware

With the MacBook Pro, Air and iMac lineups all expected to see a refresh at Apple’s Worldwide Developer’s Conference next week, it looks like the seemingly-abanonded Mac Pro will also be updated. Apple has begun pulling Mac Pro stock from its retail stores and online shipping estimates are also starting to slip. This type of activity is typical right before a new version of an Apple product is announced, as Apple clears out its old inventory to make room for the new.

WSJ chronicles Apple move away from Google Maps and the growing rivalry between the companies
Most of you know what is coming in iOS 6 Maps. However, in a long post this evening, which unfortunately does not include much that we haven’t seen or heard, the Wall Street Journal chronicles the last five years that have saw Google and Apple going from best of corporate friends by sharing board members and agreeing to no-poach agreements to sworn enemies spending a great deal of time disparaging each other in and out of courts. The latest breakup in the relationship, and probably the biggest holdout, is Maps. Apple has used Google’s Maps since the launch of the iPhone in 2007 when Google’s CEO Eric Schmidt went on

Any.DO expands outside of Android, brings its handy To-Do tools to iOS and Google Chrome Chances are some members of Team Android won't be too pleased to share the any.DO goods with the iOS squad, but for what it's worth, you'll always be able to say you had it first. After being a success on Google's mobile OS, any.DO has decided to test out other waters, including making its way to those iPod touches / iPhones / iPads of the world, as well as Google Chrome in extension form. On the iOS front, the app -- which sports a very minimalist, but sleek design -- allows users to add, adjust and edit multiple tasks using a drag-and-drop, gesture-based UI. Meanwhile, the Chrome extension keeps the similar productivity goal, but takes it

Apple Will Ditch Google In New Maps App “Later This Year”
Following numerous claims that Apple will abandon Google Maps and release proprietary mapping technology this year, The Wall Street Journal today reports that Apple is indeed throwing out Google Maps once and for all. Apple showed signs of moving away from Google Maps when it used open-source mapping technology in its recently launched iPhoto for iOS app.
Apple has been reportedly “hatching the plan to evict Google Maps from the iPhone for years,” and the company is expected to debut its completely new app “later this year.”
Later this year, Apple is planning to oust Google Maps as the preloaded, default maps app from the iPhone and iPad and release a new

A few days ago, TechCrunch reported that Facebook will be integrated into iOS 6 in some fashion. This is not a major surprise given Apple CEO Tim Cook’s hint at the AllThingsD D10 Conference of iOS Facebook integration. We heard many weeks ago that Apple and Facebook engineers were working in collaboration on implementing some sort of integration of Facebook into iOS 6. Simultaneously, Apple and Facebook executives were discussing the terms of the deal and exactly how Facebook would be integrated into iOS 6. While we knew that some sort of integration was incoming,

Judge rules Steve Jobs’ thermonuclear comments can be used in Motorola trial
Steve Jobs was always known to be pretty vocal when it came to talking about Google’s Android. Comments from Jobs referring to Android as a stolen product and vowing to destroy it made it into Walter Isaacson’s official biography, and now a judge presiding in a patent case with Motorola ruled that he will allow the comments to be referenced in trial, going against Apple’s lawyer’s requests. Reuter’s reports (via GigaOM):
Steve Jobs gave a lot of juicy quotes before he died, and Apple Inc has failed to keep some of them out of an upcoming patent trial against Google’s Motorola

Ask Engadget: best cheap external Macbook Air monitor? We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, here's the outlet to do so. This week's Ask Engadget inquiry is from Neil, who wants a display for his Macbook Air that costs less than a cinema display. If you're looking to send in an inquiry of your own, drop us a line at ask engadget com. "Dear Engadget, I use my Macbook Air in clamshell mode 95% of the time. I use an Acer V223W 22-inch monitor, but connected over Mini Displayport to DVI, it looks dull and fuzzy. I know an Apple Cinema Display is fantastic, but I don't want to splurge over $1000 for one. Can you suggest something a little more reasonably priced please? Thank you!"

ChipWorks dives into the Samsung Galaxy SIII, discovers the Sony iPhone 4S camera
ChipWorks and iFixit are hardcore when it comes to breaking open our favorite devices to see what is inside. The two websites decided to take it up a notch today by joining forces to publish a live teardown of the non-LTE Samsung Galaxy SIII. ChipWorks looked at the—you guessed—chips, while iFixit focused on repair aspects.
This is what the ChipWorks dissection unearthed:
Yep, that is Samsung’s Exynos 4412, 32 nm CMOS, 1.4 GHz quad core ARM processor.
“The Exynos is in a standard PoP (Package-on-Package) assembly with a Samsung LP DDR2 Green Memory K3PE7E700M-XGC2,” explained ChipWorks. “It is notable that
