Australian Price Gouging Inquiry Targets Apple, Microsoft And Others
Getting a new laptop or buying a new license for an operating system is often cheaper in the U.S. than in most other countries. Europeans, for example, are used to paying a hefty premium for Apple products and the situation is similar in Australia, where the cheapest MacBook Air currently costs about 15% more than in the United States. Now, however, the Australian government is starting a parliamentary inquiry into these pricing schemes. According to Australia’s Sydney Morning Herald, the politicians behind this inquiry hope that calling these companies out publicly will result in prices dropping.

There is perhaps no name in the world of hacking as legendary as Geohot. George Hotz was the first person to unlock the original iPhone back in 2007. He was 17 years old at the time. He also released multiple jailbreaks, including “purplera1n” for the iPhone 3GS. Hotz later went on to hack the PlayStation 3 and battle Sony in a high-profile lawsuit.

Reuters reported today that Apple has been in talks since earlier this year to stream films owned by premium TV channel EPIX to Apple TV set top boxes and potentially its much-rumored upcoming HDTV product. Three major studios including Paramount Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, and Lionsgate back the channel:

Earlier this month Apple launched the new iPad in South Korea and eleven other countries and today the company continues its international launch of the device with an additional nine countries. At Apple’s Q2 earnings call this week the company reported iPad sales of 11.8 million for the quarter and $6.6 billion in revenue from iPad and accessories. It also reported tremendous growth for iPhone in China, one country that is not included in today’s international rollout:
Beginning on Friday, April 27, the new iPad will be available in Colombia, Estonia, India, Israel, Latvia, Lithuania, Montenegro, South Africa and Thailand.

But a new research tool that tracks usage in real-time shows that when it comes to usage, consumers, in the U.S. at least, are far more active on Apple’s devices than on any other.
The numbers come from the ad network Chitika, which notes that in the last 24 hours, iOS devices, covering the iPhone, iPad and iPod models, accounted for just under 68 percent of all usage on its network. Android, meanwhile, accounted for just under 28 percent.

There are classic packages like LockInfo that enhance the iOS lock screen with all kinds of handy shortcuts and features, but there’s also tweaks like LockLauncher that are messy and ugly. With that said, FastLock is a refreshingly simple take on lock screen shortcuts for jailbroken iPhones.
The tweak’s designer, Joshua Tucker, explained FastLock to Cult of Mac:

Valve co-founder Gabe Newell recently addressed the rumor that Apple CEO Tim Cook visited his company last week in an interview with Seven Day Cooldown. Newell flat out denied the rumor, originally published by AppleInsider, that Tim Cook visited Valve HQ.
Cult of Mac originally added to the rumor by saying that Apple could have been meeting with Valve because Apple is working on its own type of gaming console for the living room, and was potentially looking for partnering with Valve.

The computer, launched on April 16 and 17th at the 1977 West Coast Computer Faire, went on to become the definitive machine for primary and high schools everywhere and whose wonky screen and clacky keys brought millions of kids and adults into the information age.

Flashback malware still on 140,000 Macs, despite Apple’s fix
Despite Apple releasing two software patches and a removal tool, the Flashback malware is currently still sitting on a large number of Macs. According to security company Symantec, who has been monitoring the situation closely, said today that 140,000 Macs are still infected, of the 600,000 Macs that were originally believed to be.
You would think that with the large amount of publicity this malware has been getting, fewer Macs would be infected. If you haven’t yet downloaded the update to remove the virus, or at least checked to see if your Mac is infected, we encourage you to do so. Check out Symantec’s graph after the

It’s not the blockbuster film based on Walter Isaacson’s biography that Sony is working on, but many Apple fans have been keep close eyes on the independent film as production details start to ramp up. Now that we know Kutcher will be playing Jobs, a recent interview with producer Mark Hulme revealed the movie’s title – Jobs: Get Inspired – and that the plot of the film will cover Job’s life from 1971-2000.

Where Were You Hundreds Of Birthdays and Christmases Ago Tape Scissors? It's obvious why these brilliant scissors with a built-in tape dispenser aren't available in every office supply store in the country. Apple fixes Flashback malware with software update
As promised, Apple just released a fix to remove the Flashback malware that is reportedly affecting 1 percent of all Macs.
This Java security update removes the most common variants of the Flashback malware.
This update also configures the Java web plug-in to disable the automatic execution of Java applets. Users may re-enable automatic execution of Java applets using the Java Preferences application. If the Java web plug-in detects that no applets have been run for an extended period of time it will again disable Java applets.
This update is recommended for all Mac users with Java installed.

First look at the assembly process of an iPad at Foxconn factory
Marketplace reporter Rob Schmitz is the second reporter ever to get an inside look at Foxconn, the manufacturing plant where Apple’s products are made. Today, Schmitz posted a video showing our first-ever look at the assembly process of an iPad as it goes down the assembly line at the Foxconn plant in Shanghai, China. It is interesting to look at how machines streamline some of the process. Schmitz also noted a few other interesting points, such as workers switching positions every few days while making $14 a day when first starting.

Apple’s Online Store Abandons “We’ll Be Back Soon” Sticky For A New Look
Out with the old and in with the new.
Apple’s online store just went down, and it looks like the Cupertino company has switched out the yellow sticky note of old for a cleaner, fresher look. It’s very simplistic and contains plenty of linen, like the rest of Apple’s recent UI designs.
We’re fans of the new “We’ll be back” design. What do you think?
(The store is probably just down for maintenance, but we’ll let you know if anything interesting pops up.)

Conventional wisdom on Wall Street has it that eventually (and possibly as soon as the end of this year) Apple’s stock price will reach over $1000 a share, largely fueled by the iPhone. But one Wall Street analyst isn’t nearly so optimistic. In fact, BTIG Research analyst Walter Piecyck is downgrading his recommendation on Apple stock from “Buy” to “Neutral…” and his reasons actually make a lot of sense.
“We continue to maintain our view that Apple is the primary beneficiary of an accelerating growth trend in the global adoption of smartphones, considering global penetration of smartphones has not yet even reached 30%,” Piecyk wrote to clients this morning. “However, given

Developed by prominent jailbreak dev Ryan Petrich, Curiosa is available for free in Cydia now. It comes with some nice features to enhance its functionality.

When Apple announced that it was bringing movies and TV shows purchased in the iTunes Store to iCloud, every major production house was onboard except Universal and Fox. Earlier this week, Apple put out a Java security update to patch the Flashback vulnerability that, according to a security company, has affected 600,000 Macs.
Late this evening we’re getting reports from readers that a new version of the Java update is becoming available via Software Update. Those who’ve already installed the -001 update won’t see the new update.

Following Nielsen’s latest survey that showed over 90 percent of United States smartphone buyers are choosing iOS or Android, research firm comScore today released its data of the top smartphone platforms and OEMs in the U.S. The survey included more than 30,000 people over a three-month period ending February 2012. It found Android was up 17 percentage points from a year ago with 50.1-percent of the U.S. smartphone market. In comparison, Apple’s 30.2-percent accounted for an increase of 5 percentage points from the same period a year ago.

While noting its March numbers indicate continued growth for the iPhone’s marketshare, Canaccord Genuity analyst Mike Walkley (via AllThingsD) said the iPhone is currently outselling “all other smartphones” at both AT&T and Sprint together. He also said Verizon is selling roughly as many iPhones as all Android phones combined:
