Siri vs. Android: Which Is Better at Understanding Voice Commands? Motorola created a bit of a stir yesterday when it released a video compared Android's Voice Actions on the Atrix 2 with iOS's Siri on an iPhone 4S. Fanboys screamed foul in the comments, so we decided to test it out for ourselves. And yes, there's a very clear winner.
You'll note that this is not the Atrix 2, because we didn't have one on-hand. Instead we used the Galaxy Nexus which has very similar specs. They both have dual-core TI OMAP processors (though the Nexus is clocked at 1.2GHz vs 1.0GHz on the Atrix) and a gig of RAM. The point is the software, however, and the specs are close enough to make Voice Actions perform identically. The tests were conducted

iPad 3 Rumor Roundup
Unless Apple is conning the world, the iPad 3 should be announced next week. It, like its forbears, is the subject of many a rumor, some more likely than others. We’ve collected most of them here in this post with arguments for and against, for your convenience and flaming pleasure.
Of course, we’ll be there to cover the event live, and will (if past events are any indication) get a nice hands-on as well.

Following close on the heels of the peaceniks at the NOAA, the US department of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms is exchanging their BlackBerries overwhelmingly for iPhones according to a report today by Politico.
“We’re going to delete the BlackBerry from the mix,” Rick Holgate, ATF’s chief information officer, said in an interview.
Over 60% of the replacement phones will be iPhones. Why?
“Video streaming, GPS capability, capabilities, the camera … a variety of things,” Holgate said. “Yes, these things exist on BlackBerrys, but in terms of ease of use and adaptability of the devices, the iPhones are the more functional and compelling

BARCELONA, MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS 2012 — One of the things that first inspired me to be a professional writer was sharing my early fiction experiments as a 10 year old on the discussion boards of the old dial-up service, Prodigy. The instantaneous feedback, the helpful advice, the suggestions from other people about what should happen next to my character (a monster-killing, Nazi-loathing private dick named Dr. Crypt, a name which I still use as my Twitter handle)… all of this was a formative experience for me, and without it, I never would have dared to dream that someday, I would make my living putting words down on paper.

$150 Bluetooth speaker showdown: Jawbone Jambox vs. Logitech Wireless Boombox.
I recently found myself in the need for some nice battery-powered wireless speakers for use with my iPhone, iPad and Mac.
Airplay is great for stationary speaker systems when you are in one place and on a Wifi network. But when you want to go in the back yard, on a picnic, over night at a hotel or anywhere else without a Wifi network, Airplay becomes a pain (make a new network, add airplay peripherals, etc). Then, add that not all Mac or iOS applications support Airplay and it becomes a downright nuisance.
Therefore, I decided to go with an old standby –Bluetooth speakers. I needed a built-in rechargeable battery

Not so for these KIRF iPhones, which can't make calls or download apps (let alone use Siri) but can fry your bacon rather well. 681 of these bafflingly branded gas stoves were seized by police in Wuhan, each bearing the legend "Apple China Limited." Proview Thwarted In Chinese iPad Trademark Suit, Brings Case To U.S. Shores
The dispute between Apple and Proview over the “iPad” trademark has just gotten a lot more domestic. Proview, which owned the “iPad” trademark in several countries until they sold the rights to Apple, has been alleging shenanigans, specifically that part of the company never authorized the sale. Apple, for their part, says that everything is in order, and they have the signatures of the recalcitrant Shenzhen branch of Proview to prove it.
A Chinese court found that while the ownership of the trademark was not yet able to be settled, there wasn’t enough evidence to support a sales ban on the iPad. But now Proview has brought the court to

The bankrupt Chinese company which sold Apple the ‘IPAD’ name only to claim it was deceived by Apple’s secret IP Application Development subsidiary is now suing Apple in its own back yard according to the WSJ.
The lawsuit, which was filed in the Superior Court of the State of California in Santa Clara County on Feb. 17, but previously unreported, claimed that Apple had committed fraud when it used a company set up by one of its law firms, called IP Application Development Ltd., to purchase the iPad trademark from Proview on Dec. 23, 2009 for 35,000 British pounds ($55,000).

Apple patent application points to DJ-like beat matching, pairs iTunes with fist pumps Once upon a less digital time, there existed the art of the mixtape: a tedious labor of love that required timing, taste and a penchant for musical progression. No longer in this iTunes-era, where personally curated song collections that once served as the background to our lives can now be automated by our dear friends in Cupertino. And, based on a patent application filed back in August of 2010, those Apple-made robo-playlists could get even smarter and slicker, with your perennially hip, millennial compadres being none the wiser. According to the claims covered, "an electronic device" (insert Mac or iOS product here) would be able to locate and

And, based on a patent application filed back in August of 2010, those Apple-made robo-playlists could get even smarter and slicker, with your perennially hip, millennial compadres being none the wiser. According to the claims covered, "an electronic device" (insert Mac or iOS product here) would be able to locate and

Wapple Wins Trademark Battle Over Apple
While Apple is busy fighting Proview over the iPad trademark in China, it has lost a separate trademark battle in Europe: Wapple, the mobile web developers, have won a suit filed by Apple over its name.
The suit, originally filed in 2007, claimed that Wapple was trading on Apple’s brand association and name, although Wapple had filed for a trademark on “Wapple” in 2006.
Wapple, which has been around since 2003, and incorporated in 2004 – well before the smartphone explosion – has long said that its name was wordplay on the WAP protocol, which was the main format for delivering mobile content before the rise of 3G networks and other protocols like

Apple Store in London’s world-famous Harrods department store opening mid-March, may signal iPad 3 launch date
In January, we broke the news that Apple is planning to open up a retail store inside of London’s world-famous Harrods department store. Harrods is a premier landmark with hundreds of individual shops and sections within the greater structure. The flurry of high-end brands within Harrods makes the store a logical spot for Apple to continue their string of “store-in-store” locations. Now, sources inside Harrods are reporting that Harrods and Apple plan to open the new store in mid-March.

When task management apps started adding cloud sync over a year ago, Things users were left behind while the developers at Cultured Code took a laboriously long time to get their sync solution off the ground. Mac users will see the biggest immediate benefit: VLC isn't ugly anymore! The program's Windows 95-chic UI is gone, replaced with an Apple-y, single-window interface that'll match everything else on your desktop. It's smooth, simple, and comprehendible, for once. How the Mac Will Die
Another Apple announcement, another de-emphasis on the Mac brand. It seems that every time Apple opens its corporate pie-hole, the venerable Macintosh brand drops down a notch in importance, and the Mac’s future demise seems more likely.
I was on a recent episode of Leo Laporte’s MacBreak Weekly, and after an hour and 45 minutes on a show with “Mac” in the name, the M-word was scarcely mentioned.
No, the Mac brand isn’t going away soon. I’m sure they’ll be upgraded and improved and sold for years to come. And they’re not failing in the market.
But it’s clear that the Mac will die. Sort of. Here’s what I’m talking about.

iPhone 4 antennagate class-action lawsuit settled, owners to receive $15 or a free case According to CNET, a class-action lawsuit over the iPhone 4's troublesome antenna, aka Antennagate, has been settled. Mountain Lion: Most Skippable OS X Upgrade Ever?
There’s a good reason Apple let Mountain Lion out of its cage this morning with no fanfare or event. Like Lion, the improvements are minor at best and some less than useless. Lion hasn’t sold particularly well, and few of its “improvements” have caught the attention of the public, except when they try to scroll down and it goes up. Personally, I thought being able to resize windows from any edge was worth the price of admission alone, but the rest, not so much.
And now here is Mountain Lion, a collection of iOS apps and features already available elsewhere. And a shady “security” feature that by default prevents you from getting apps from any source but the Mac App

The Address Book Fiasco: Another Reason For Apple To Get Its Social Platform Right
After a week of confused coverage around which mobile app developers access user address books and how they do it, we are finally getting a product-level resolution. Apple says today (in time to beat back some inquiring congressmen) that it will start requiring developers to ask for explicit user permission in order to access these contacts.
The new interface, slated for its next iOS operating system release, will provide a permissions notification to users after they install an app, similar to how it currently requires users to approve location sharing or push notifications. This change will add some arguably

Study: jailbreak apps upload less private data than Apple approved apps
The app development world went into a frenzy, when social network app Path was caught uploading user’s address book information without asking for permission last week. We’ve already given our view on the matter, but yesterday, Forbes reported on a study by University of California at Santa Barbara that found Cydia apps leak private data less than apps available on the iTunes App Store.
The group built a tool called PiOS that analyzes iOS apps for private data leaks. They looked at a total of 1,407 free apps, 825 of which were downloaded from the App Store and 526 of which were downloaded from Cydia’s biggest repository, the BigBoss repo.

Rumors of added Siri language support have been swirling for a little while now. As it turns out, the digital assistant herself thinks she can already speak Japanese, despite the fact that the language isn’t officially supported yet.
Apple has said that it is adding Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Italian and Spanish support in 2012. Siri can already speak in English (with UK and Australian dialect versions), French and German. Language preferences can be configured in the iOS 5 Settings app on the iPhone 4S, and Japanese is not on option.

Apple’s Approach To Cash: “We Spend Our Money Like It’s Our Last Penny”
Apple has always been notoriously tight-fisted when it comes to spending. As the world’s most valuable technology company by a long shot, there’s a ton of pressure on Apple to acquire competition and flaunt its $100 billion cash reserve.
At the Goldman Sachs Conference today, Cook noted that Apple has spent billions on acquisitions, in the supply chain, retail, and company infrastructure. “But yes, we still have a lot,” he said.
Cook asked for patience from the public and shareholders. He admitted that Apple has more cash than it needs to run its business. ”We’re not going to have a togo party or do something outlandish,” he quipped. “We’re

I was walking home last week and the entire street – and some of the sidewalk – was blocked by large fire trucks and a gaggle of firemen in full regalia. The ladder truck was already planted firmly on the asphalt, ready to send a stream of water soaring over nearby apartment buildings and more trucks were coming, clogging the one-way street further.
Convinced I was about to see an inferno, I tentatively crossed the street. I assumed I’d be stopped and turned away. Instead, the firemen joked and jostled on the sidewalk and I saw a contractor arguing with someone I assumed to be a building resident. The contractor must have been welding – you could

TVs, PCs and gaming hardware each saw a decline in revenue share while smartphone and tablet sales grew -- slates and e-readers experienced a five percent increase, taking up nearly 11 percent of the hardware pie and raking in $15 billion.

Specifically, the Grammy Trustees Award is awarded to "individuals who, during their careers in music, have made significant contributions, other than performance, to the field of recording." It's like the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award but for non-performers as well. Previous winners include Les Paul, Clive Davis, Thomas Edison, Walt Disney and a group Steve would be extremely proud to stand next to, The Beatles.

The problem, however, is that this one in particular is a tough nut to crack. When you take all the evidence both for and against a little iPad, you’re still left with no real conclusion.
So conclusion aside, here are some of the reasons Apple may, or may not, introduce the little iPad:

There's no word yet on when the Cantonese or Taiwanese dialects could be added, or the Korean, Italian, Spanish languages promised on the Siri FAQ. Or the Scottish accent that it so desperately needs. Everybody possesses a good understanding about what's practical with a

Since a purported iPad 3 back shell image leaked out earlier today, we’ve been digging into the story behind the image, where it originally came from, and some of the intricate details behind the part. For one, there are not only a few of these back shells being floated to repair shops, but there are sizable amounts of these parts being built in China. This adds credence to reports that the iPad 3 is in production, and likely means that things are moving full steam ahead of the rumored March launch.

Apple Forces iPhone Apps To Go Retina Display, iPhone 3GS On The Way Out?
Apple sent out an interesting message to third-party developers today. iOS devs are now required to submit Retina display screenshots for their iPhone and iPod touch apps to the App Store. All updates to existing apps must also meet the 960×640 resolution requirement.
Not only does this new policy signal the death of 480×320 resolution apps, but it also indicates that the iPhone 3GS may not be around much longer.

Apple is the only PC brand making progress in Europe (and that’s without iPad)
Research firm Gartner just released its estimates for PC shipments in the Western Europe region during the holiday quarter, and only Apple and Asus made any meaningful progress, with Apple recording the strongest gains in France and the United Kingdom.
While the Mac maker remained absent from the Top 5 rankings in Western Europe and Germany, it was a sole first-tier PC brand to grow sales in the United Kingdom during the holiday quarter. Specifically, Apple’s Mac business in the country grew 17.2 percent, enough to rank fourth with a 9.1 percent market share.

When Will The Post-PC Era Arrive? It Just Did.
There has been much debate about what the post-PC era is, when it will arrive, or whether it’s already here. But key pieces of new data, emerging last week, are making the case that we crossed the imaginary line from the “PC” era to the “post-PC” era at the end of 2011. According to analysts at Canalys, two major computing milestones were achieved at the end of this year: smartphone shipments outpaced PCs for the first time ever, and Apple became the world’s largest PC maker, if you count iPads as PCs (as well you should).
Combined, what these numbers tell us is that the post-PC era is happening now. Right now. And maybe we need to think about how we define “PC.”

iBooks Author gets new EULA, aims to clear writer's block We've waxed lyrical about iBooks Author at the technological level, but a good self-publishing platform counts for nothing if authors are put off by its terms and conditions. A particular source of antagonism so far has been the notion that, if an author decides to charge a fee for their iBook, then Apple will claim exclusive distribution rights and prevent them from publishing their work anywhere else. Check out the More Coverage links below and you'll see that a number of writers tore up Apple's licensing agreement and flung it into the proverbial overflowing trash can. This tends to be frustrating when moving files around, as it makes what should be a straightforward process into a disaster. In this video, I’ll show you how you can upload your documents directly to iCloud, to make file sharing much easier.
