Apple’s R&D Spending Climbs $1 Billion To $3.4 Billion During FY 2012 - techcrunch.comApple released the 10-K it filed with the SEC today, reflecting its financial status and records for the entirety of 2012. Most of the content is what we’ve seen already from quarterly results, but a couple of statistics stood out as particularly interesting and worthy of note. For one, Apple spent $3.4 billion in research and development during its 2012 fiscal year, up $1 billion from 2011. Apple also significantly added to its full-time employee pool, with around 12,400 new hires.
The new R&D spending total for the year is perhaps the most impressive number, since it’s an increase that’s much larger than at any time in the

With The New iPad, Apple Accelerates; With The iPad Mini, It’s Pedal To The Metal - techcrunch.com“So why is iPad so phenomenally successful? Well it turns out that there’s a simple reason for this,” Apple CEO Tim Cook told an audience at the Apple event last week in San Jose. “People love their iPads.”
The response drew some awkward laughs as it seemed almost like the punchline of a misfired joke. But it wasn’t a joke — Cook was absolutely serious.
On the surface, such an answer seems to lack the depth to provide insight into the tablet riddle. After all, there have been many failed tablets before the iPad, and perhaps even more since the iPad. But it turns out that everyone may have been over-thinking it. The iPad is

Tim Cook emails employees; thanks Scott Forstall, says Bob Mansfield to stay on for two years - 9to5mac.com
Following Apple’s major executive-related news this afternoon, Apple CEO Tim Cook has emailed employees with information on the announced changes. Additionally, Cook has shed light on some new details not included in the public press release. First of all, Cook thanks Apple’s iOS Senior Vice President Scott Forstall “for all of his many contributions to Apple over his career.” As for Forstall’s replacement, Craig Federighi, Cook notes that Federighi led the successful release of OS X Mountain Lion earlier this year.

Pandora Radio For iOS Hits Version 4, Adds New Social, Music Info Features - cultofmac.com
Pandora, that grandaddy of internet radio, just got a huge update on iOS, and is coming soon to Android. The new version includes the ability to share your music listening with friends on the Pandora service, Facebook, and Twitter, a feature I was surprised wasn’t already there. In addition, you can follow other folks on the new Music Feed, much like Spotify and Rdio allow. There’s a new Profile page accessed right in-app, more information about music and the artists themselves as well, a la Last FM, and full lyrics for every song that can be played on the service.
There is a temporary issue for iPad owners: Pandora is a universal

Scott Forstall: Why Is Apple Keeping Him As An Advisor? - cultofmac.com
Even though it’s obvious that Scott Forstall was canned by Tim Cook, he’s being kept on for a year as an advisor to the CEO.
This seems to make no sense, but here’s why:
It’s all about preventing Forstall from jumping ship. Noncompete agreements are not enforceable in California. They are in other states and jurisdictions, but not in Apple’s home state.
Obviously, an executive of Forstall’s stature would be snapped up in a second by a rivals like Google or Microsoft.
Details of Forstall’s departure deal with Apple won’t be made known until Apple files papers with the SEC, but his new role as an advisor to Tim Cook is a bullshit job to keep him out

Button 2.0 was designed by Shapeways user Egant, and is 3-D printed to order for just $3.28 a pop. The plastic disks have a groove on one side to clip any 2mm cable in place, a fairly standard diameter for headphones.
It’s an amazingly simple idea, and I love that it is also a 3-D printed object. It also makes me realize that I could just wrap the cord around any

Amazon Gets Feisty, Updates Homepage To Talk Smack On The iPad Mini - techcrunch.comCompetition in the low-cost tablet space has been heating up for a while now thanks to strong new hardware from the likes of Asus, Google, and Barnes & Noble, but it seems the time has come for the Kindle Fire hucksters at Amazon to go on the offensive against a very prominent rival: Apple’s iPad mini.
The company has recently given its homepage a facelift with a very prominent comparison between the 7-inch Kindle Fire HD and the iPad mini sitting right at the top. Most of it is pretty tame and points out the disparity in features between the two tablets (ex. the Fire HD sports a higher resolution display and smarter speaker layout than the mini), but

The boat certainly has an interesting look/shape.
The control center of course has iMacs (are those the new ones?!)

The people who worked on the vessel were given iPod shuffles as a gift from the Jobs family.

Buyer Beware - techcrunch.comI’ve greatly enjoyed watching the petty controversies that erupted this week, controversies having to do with what can only loosely be described as buyer’s remorse: indignant iPad owners, a mysteriously banished Amazon customer, and a host of people calling foul on Facebook’s promoted posts. One of these is a legitimate and productive complaint, the others are nothing but a froth about the mouth.
To dispense with the first, very briefly: the iPad owners angry with Apple for releasing an updated version too quickly are demonstrating such grotesque entitlement that there’s simply nothing to discuss. This tantrum is pathetic and you are embarrassing

Nevermind that Amazon managed to post a loss on $13.8 billion in sales today — Apple only made $8.2 billion in profit. “Ahhhh!!!!! That’s right, such a profit wouldn’t have happened under Steve. In fact, it never did. Jobs’ best quarter in terms of profit was just over $7 billion — and actually, that’s when Tim Cook was interim CEO last year.
But had you read TechCrunch in July, after Apple’s last “miss”, you would have been prepared. As we noted at

Just as it did for the iPhone 5, fifth-gen iPod touch, and seventh-gen iPod nano, Apple posted schematics for the new iPad mini and fourth-gen iPad that were announced yesterday. Both devices, of which, will be available to customers Nov. 2. The blueprints released this evening are certainly useful for manufacturers in the accessory game or just for the curious in general. There is not much in the way of new information, but they give us a detailed look at the unreleased products. What we really cannot wait for is iFixit’s teardown. In the mean time, check out the schematics above and below.

While several iPad case manufacturers have already announced iPad mini and iPad 4th generation cases since the product reveals yesterday in San Francisco, Apple has today posted several high-resolution technical drawings of each of the new tablet computers to its developer website, on a page titled, “Designing Cases for iPod, iPhone, and iPad.”
There are linked PDF documents for every model of iPad, as well as iPhone and iPod. The PDF we downloaded was very high resolution, 5106 X 3306, 150 dpi image, when we converted it from PDF to jpeg. These drawings should help case makers design cases witha n even higher design tolerance. As we reported

The morning of Apple’s iPad mini event earlier this week, we told you there was a handful of new accessories coming including four new Lightning adapters and a 12W USB power adapter. We didn’t hear much about them during the event, but the new cables and adapters have hit Apple’s online store now, including a Lightning Digital AV adapter and Lightning to VGA adapter, with most shipping in “2-3 weeks”.
On the product page for the new 12W USB charger, Apple confirmed it would indeed ship with Retina iPads. With the new fourth-gen replacing the third-gen iPad—that would essentially cover just the iPad 4. It is,

The iPad Mini hasn't even been announced yet and people are already making fun of it. That's pretty typical for any big Apple product launch but it seems like everyone calling the iPad Mini stupid had the same revelation about it: a smaller iPad is just an... iPhone.
Wow, the giant collective lightbulb hanging over our heads must've flicked on at the same exact time because a lot of people don't really see the point to an iPad mini (or whatever Apple is going to call it). We'll reserve our judgement until we get our hands on the thing but in the meantime, enjoy the hilariously low expectations these people have on the tiny

It’s Not The Size Of The iPad That Matters, It’s The Motion Of The Ocean - techcrunch.com
Yes, we know that Apple is probably maybe releasing an iPad Mini soon. It’s not an iPhone, but larger. It’s not an iPad, but smaller. It’s…the Mini.
Prepare yourself for thousands of parodies about the product, but this one is just too good not to post. It’s slightly NSFW in that suggestive way, but if you work somewhere where you can get in trouble for this, then quit.
It’s not the size of the iPad, it’s the motion of the ocean. Or Accelerometer, as it were.
But…where’s the Batman parody? I’m waiting. Needless to say, TechCrunch will be covering the upcoming Apple-madness like whoah.

Samsung To Cut The Cord, End LCD Panel Supply Relationship With Apple - techcrunch.com
Samsung told The Korea Times on Monday that it will end its LCD panel supply relationship with Apple as of next year. That’s according to a “senior Samsung source” who declined to be identified, citing insufficient margins owing to Apple’s supply pricing strategy. Samsung’s role in Apple’s LCD supply chain has dwindled, with the Korean company reportedly cut out of iPad mini production, but Samsung’s decision to pull the plug may have been a pre-emptive strike by the parts manufacturer owing to a declining relationship between the two.
Samsung is said to be fielding more orders from its consumer

Apple’s iPad mini announcement is set for early next week, and the big variable still remains price. Apple’s smaller iPad to likely start at a minimum of $329 in the U.S. - 9to5mac.comApple’s entry price for its upcoming smaller iPad is between the base model of the new, fifth-generation iPod touch ($299) and the currently shipping WiFi-only 16GB iPad 2 ($399). According to our sources, the base model of the smaller iPad will likely be priced at a minimum of $329 in the United States.
Two higher capacities of the smaller iPad will be available in the WiFi-only configuration. These will likely be priced at $100 premiums over each other at a minimum of $429 and $529.
It is possible that this base price for the smaller iPad could be higher, but our best guess is $329.

New full-sized iPad with improved internals, Lightning connector to be announced next week at current prices - 9to5mac.com.
Apple will announce a refreshed version of its full-sized, 9.7-inch Retina display iPad at its media event October 23rd, according to our sources. These people say that the new version of the iPad will retain the same $499, $599, and $699 WiFi-only price points, and the LTE line will retain the current $629, $729, and $829 pricing. With no price changes or additional storage capacities, we believe that the storage options of 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB will also be retained.
Launching roughly half a year after the current third-generation iPad, this new iPad is said to be a tweaked model and not a complete revamp.

Apple’s iPad mini is almost certainly set to be announced next week at an event in San Jose Tuesday, and we’re now hearing that it will ship a week and a half after that unveiling. November 2 is the ship date we’ve heard today from a source close to Apple’s supply chain, echoing an earlier report by Geeky Gadgets that that’s the day the iPad mini will go on sale.
Geeky Gadgets cited a prominent U.K. retailer as the source of its information. For the iPhone 5, the September 21 retail availability date was telegraphed ahead of time thanks to leaked information from carrier partners, and retailers have been a source of Apple-related product leaks

The 2012 iPod Touch: A Great Pocket Computer For Kids - cultofmac.com
The first thing you notice about the 2012 fifth-generation iPod Touch is how beautifully it’s made. Crazy thin, ridiculously light, yet as a sturdy as a slab of slate.
The fit and finish is extraordinary. There are no seams, screws, gaps, cracks or openings. It’s literally seamless. The buttons look like they’re part of the iPod’s case, not nubbins that poke through. Who makes stuff this good? Oh yeah, Apple.
Other reviews have complained about the price (it starts at $300) and some reviewers seem nonplussed by the Touch. Who is it for, they wonder? Especially if you already have an iPhone.

Apple and Samsung depend heavily on one another, despite the fact that they’re also at each other’s throats in intellectual property legal disputes around the world. But Apple is looking to reduce Samsung’s role in the manufacturing and design side of its business, in a move that could have greater long-term repercussions for the Korean electronics giant than for the iPhone maker.
The Korea Times reported this weekend that Samsung will no longer be involved in any part of its chip business other than manufacturing, according to a Samsung official who spoke to the publication on condition of anonymity. Previously,

I love this idea. Clearly it’s meant as a way to get repeat viewings and therefore repeat ticket sales, but so what? It’s easy to forget that the iPod touch didn’t even include a camera until 2010. While such a key feature has been standard on the iPhone since its initial unveiling in 2007, Apple apparently didn’t think it was one of the must-have features of the touch. That changes this year.
With the new iPod touch (the fifth generation, for those keeping score at home), which was unveiled a few weeks ago and just started shipping this week, the camera is one of the hallmark features. In fact, it may end up being its most important feature.

iPad Mini: Apple Orders More Than 10 Million Units For Q4, Says WSJ - techcrunch.com
Following its story last week that suppliers to Apple had kicked off production of a smaller iPad – the so-called ‘iPad mini’ – the Wall Street Journal is now reporting Apple has ordered more than 10 million units for the fourth quarter of this year. The figure comes from Asian component suppliers to Apple — also the source of last week’s iPad mini story.
The paper quotes the suppliers as saying that Apple’s order for 10 million initial units of this smaller iPad is roughly double the size of the order placed by Amazon for its Kindle Fire tablets in the same quarter. If Apple is planning to launch a smaller iPad, it will be a

Apple Job Posting Hints At Major New System-On-A-Chip Design Effort - techcrunch.com
Apple introduced a number of new job postings today, and one in particular is interesting given the company’s recent decisions relative to iPhone hardware. The posting is seeking an “SoC Modelling Architect / Lead,” or in the words of the job description, an individual who will be “at the center of a chip design effort interfacing with all disciplines, with a critical impact on getting functional products to millions of customers quickly.”
Essentially, Apple seems to be looking for a maestro for its own chip design efforts, which have taken on additional depth since Apple is now responsible for its own custom SoC design following the

Is This Why Apple Is Making The iPad Mini? Probably Not - cultofmac.com
According to a new report by the Pew Internet and American Life Project, one in four adults in the United States owns a tablet of some kind. Two thirds of those adults have purchased them in the last year, according to the study, which was reported by The Economist. Further, the data doesn’t even include the new Google Nexus tablet, nor the new Kindle Fire HD from Amazon.
Is iPad in trouble? Is this a new era for Apple, one in which it must play catch up? The numbers of units do seem to tell that story.
I’m not buying it, though.
While Steve Jobs famously said that a smaller iPad was stupid, we also know Steve Jobs said a lot of things that he didn’t really

Making Sense Of The iPad Mini Rumors: What To Expect, When, And Why - techcrunch.com
Apple’s iPad mini is now the subject of a bumper crop of fall rumors, and the stakes are getting higher now that the Wall Street Journal has chimed in with a report that production is underway on the smaller-sized tablet, and in fact began in September. Already this week we’ve also seen leaked parts in photographs, too, and news that invites for an event could go out as early as next week. But what does it all mean?
Watching Apple rumors is a lot of guesswork, but it’s also about pattern identification. The same sources tend to crop up with reports, and there’s also a rough timeline that seems to follow in terms of how we get information about

The Complete Dock For iPhone 5, iPad And Xoom (!) - cultofmac.com
Apple’s Universal Dock is anything but universal. It won’t work with any iPads, it won’t work with the iPhone 5, and it sure as hell won’t fit a Motorola Xoom. And unless you’re using it two-handed, and you’re wide awake, it doesn’t even work very well with the iPhone or iPod Touch.
The Complete Dock, on the other hand, works with almost anything. Hell, if you wanted to dock your cruise ship in it you probably could.
The Complete Dock is milled from a single, weighty chunk if aluminum, and thanks to a clever modular design and a reversible back support, it works with all iPads, and all recent iPhones, whether in a case

Report: Apple must approve manufacturers for third-party Lightning connector products, will begin in November - 9to5mac.com
Following several reports that third-party manufacturers would have trouble creating accessories and cables for Apple’s new Lightning connectors, iLounge reported today that Apple is making major changes to its Made For iPad/iPhone/iPod (MFi) policies. According to the report, Apple will have to approve manufacturing facilities creating Lightning products, something that sources indicated won’t happen until November:

Samsung Strikes Back Against Apple: Files Patent Suit Against iPhone 5 In U.S. Court - techcrunch.com
As expected, Samsung has filed a lawsuit against Apple’s latest iPhone — the iPhone 5 — alleging the smartphone infringes patents it holds. Commenting on the action in a statement given to Reuters, Samsung said: “We have little choice but to take the steps necessary to protect our innovations and intellectual property rights.”
We’ve contacted Samsung for further comment and details of the disputed patents and will update if we hear back. Samsung provided the following full statement: “We have always preferred to compete in the marketplace with our innovative products, rather than in a courtroom. However, Apple

iHook Promises To Mount Your iPod Nano To Everything, Or At Least Open A Beer For You - cultofmac.com
I love my iPod Nano so much, it’s almost irrational. I know it doesn’t have bluetooth or wifi, or any other wireless connectivity, but the form factor is so perfect! I even have a Hex leather watchband for it, wearing it when I’m out on the town.
But it’s tiny. I lose it often. I’m actually on my second Nano due to accidental loss. The clip on the back sucks for anything but casual clipping on clothes when I’m working out, or attaching to my Hex watchband.
The iHook, then, aims to fix these problems, with a funky little bent metal mounting bracket that the manufacturer promises will change your Nano’s life. And yours, by
