Merge Clears Up Confusion By Combining iMessages From Multiple Device IDs Right In iOS - cultofmac.com
SAN FRANCISCO, JailbreakCon 2012 — Since Apple added iMessage to the Mac in OS X, there’s even more ways to communicate between Apple devices. The iPhone, iPod touch, iPad and Mac can all send and receive via iMessage, but one person usually sends from multiple addresses across devices. You may, for instance, send a message through your phone number on the iPhone, and then later send another through your Apple ID email address on the Mac.
Apple recently introduced iMessage contact unification in iOS 6, meaning that you can now be reached at both a phone number and email address on a device like the iPad. But there’s

Passbook Gets Explanatory Paragraph, Still Seems Silly - cultofmac.com
I have to admit, I was intrigued by Passbook when I first heard of it. An app that keeps my airline and movie tickets together with my coupons and customer loyalty cards seems like a good idea. For now, however, Passbook in iOS 6 seems like a placeholder to me, an app with no real purpose in and of itself, a place to link to other apps.
Apple quietly added a little explanation in the form of a paragraph in the iTunes Store page for Passbook apps which shows, at least, that they’re planning on more and that they understand that we all might feel a bit nonplused about one of the bigger features of the new iOS.

Tim Cook Apologizes For Apple Maps, Points To Competitive Alternatives - techcrunch.com
Apple has finally made a real statement to its customers apologizing about the Maps drama that’s been unfolding over the past few weeks with the introduction of iOS 6. According to CEO Tim Cook, the company “fell short” on its commitment to bring world-class products to it’s customers.
Last week, the only comment we got out of Apple was that this is “just the start.”
Within the letter, Cook makes mention of Google Maps being the first version of Maps on iOS, but that “as time progressed, wanted to provide customers with even better Maps including features such as turn-by-turn directions, voice integration, Flyover and

Line 6 is still testing their accessories with iPhone 5, but founder Marcus Ryle tells CDM, “Based on what’s been announced, for audio products that operate using USB Host mode and follow Apple approved methods such as CoreAudio and CoreMIDI, I would not expect there to be any technical issue.” I asked if they had anything to say

Speaking of trusting early reports, it seems that the A6 used in the iPhone 5 runs at 1.3GHz rather than 1GHz as previously reported. This comes from the latest build of the iOS benchmarking software, Geekbench, which just released its iOS 6 version today. Earlier builds clocked the iPhone 5 at 1GHz. But now that the software is compiled for iOS 6, it seems the A6 is slightly faster, and both CPU cores run at 1.3GHz.

A new report suggests that Apple is making deals in the carbon fiber business, possibly ahead of next year’s iPad launch.
Japanese site Macotakara can be a hit or miss source. They were one of the first sites to leak images of what would prove to be the iPhone 5’s new display, but they habe also said that the new iPod nanos would have WiFi and that Apple’s making a Galaxy Note like phablet. So their rumors need to be taken with a grain of salt.

So what do you guys usually do with it? Sell it to some poor sap on Craigslist? Use it as an iPod? Hand it down to relatives? Store it as a collectable?
This goes for any phone that you've replaced by the way, what happens to it after you get a new one? For some reason, I refuse to sell my old gadgets and just keep it in a drawer that I never open. Mini-hoarding or something, I guess.Everybody possesses a good understanding about what's practical with a

Apple’s Thinner Display On iPhone 5 Likely Causing Supply Constraints - techcrunch.com
One of the reasons Apple’s supply of iPhone 5 devices couldn’t meet the opening weekend demand may be due to its decision to use thinner touchscreens vs. previous generations, which combine touch sensor and glass together in one. The tech in question is coming from just two suppliers at the moment, LG Display and Japan Display, and according to some, that’s leading to a shortfall in production numbers.
Barclays analyst Ben Reitzes said in a research note (via Bloomberg) on Monday that the supply issue could be helped by adding Sharp to the list of suppliers for the in-cell displays, but that the Japanese LCD

I shot a side-by-side comparison shot of the two devices executing a number of tasks, including simple stuff like opening webpages and Facebook, to more processor intensive tasks like exporting a 1o second 1080p HD video in iMovie. Video: iPhone 5 Vs. iPhone 4S Side-By-Side Performance Tests - techcrunch.com
Want to see exactly how the iPhone 5′s speedy new A6 processor compares to the now-somewhat-pokey iPhone 4S A5 chip? I shot a side-by-side comparison shot of the two devices executing a number of tasks, including simple stuff like opening webpages and Facebook, to more processor intensive tasks like exporting a 1o second 1080p HD video in iMovie. Check it out, the iPhone 5 seems to edge the older phone in just about every area, but to varying degrees. The iPhone 4S is the white one on the left, by the way, and the iPhone 5 is in black on the right.

More than most other fields, technology prides itself on being a hotbed of innovation. It's easy to forget, though, that innovation is messy, and for every iPod, there are a few dozen portable, wrist-mounted 8-track players. Here are ten failed gadgets that were unabashedly crazy.

The Advertising (In)Effect: Rankings For Top Tablet Ads Exclude Bestseller iPad. Changing Tides Ahead? - techcrunch.com
Here’s a sign that all the TV advertising dollars in the world can’t always buy you market share and consumer love (useful lesson for politicians, too): a list of top ads in the U.S. for tablets puts Samsung way into the lead among vendors — but Apple, which actually is the best-selling tablet at the moment, doesn’t even make the top-10.
The rankings, from ad analytics company Ace Metrix – a startup backed by Hummer Winblad Venture Partners, Palomar Ventures, Leapfrog Ventures, and WPP – say they determine an ad’s “Ace Score” based on viewer reaction to national TV

Riots Rock Foxconn’s Taiyuan Plant - techcrunch.com
Richard Lai is reporting that more than 2,000 employees of the Taiyuan Foxconn plant rioted last night, causing damage on the factory campus after a guard allegedly hit a worker at 10pm.
The Taiyuan plant is notorious for their mandatory overtime requirements. Quoth Lai:
An undercover report from August mentioned that the Taiyuan plant processed the back casing of the iPhone 5. It also highlighted the company’s harsh management as well as “practically compulsory” over-time work. We don’t doubt that this riot escalated due to dissatisfaction over working conditions.
Lai found some video from the factory and writers on Weibo are reporting further information about the

Apple Is Already Shipping Many “Late” iPhone 5 Pre-Orders - techcrunch.com
Just about an hour after Apple’s iPhone 5 became available for pre-order, the company’s website started alerting customers that their phones would likely arrive a week or two after the phone went on sale in its retail stores on September 21. Clearly, most pundits assumed, this meant that the demand for the iPhone 5 was so overwhelming that even Apple’s finely tuned supply chain couldn’t quite keep up with demand. It turns out, however, that instead of having to wait two weeks or more, many of these customers who were originally told their phones would arrive on October 5 or later are now getting their phones delivered tomorrow or a bit later in

How Ridiculous Is It That Apple Maps Redirect To Google Maps On The Web? - techcrunch.com
Yes, Apple Maps redirect to Google Maps on desktop, Android and any non-iOS 6 phones when you share your location. Womp. Obviously this is happening because there’s no hub for Apple Maps on the web, but still, the absurdity of this loop is exemplary of how ill-thought out this whole Maps switch was.
Like you most likely, I’m still sort of confused by the logic here: I have iOS 6, and when I try to share my location from Apple Maps to Facebook and Twitter, Apple Maps shares a maps.apple.com URL wrapper. If you click that Facebook or Twitter link from the web, it will load Google Maps with the specified address.

Fly Or Die: iPhone 5 - techcrunch.com
You’d think that doing an iPhone 5 Fly Or Die would be a piece of cake, what with 2 million pre-orders in 24 hours, but it’s not so simple. All the complaining of boredom and slight lack of innovation out of Apple… well, it’s not too far off of the truth.
Apple took a huge risk with the original iPhone, and even with the iPod. But it turns out that those products changed their respective industries. And the iPhone, in particular, is the company’s most profitable product ever, usurping the iPod. Now, Apple is the most valuable publicly traded company in the world, and while they’ll take smaller risks with products like the iPad, there’s no reason to

Watch Apple’s First iPhone 5 TV Ads: “Physics”, “Cheese”, “Thumb” and “Ears” - techcrunch.com
Apple’s making commercials again, but this time they’re really really good. If you’re not sold on picking up an iPhone 5 yet, these ads spotted by Macstories will probably get you stoked.
Each ad has a theme and a one word name. The ads show off different capabilities of the iPhone 5, and I must say that they’re extremely compelling. Have a look:
Physics
Cheese
Thumb
Ears
My favorite one definitely has to be “Thumb”, as it shows off Apple’s genius marketing and ability to explain the complex in a simple way. Well done, Apple.
Also, I’m not surprised that “Maps” wasn’t released as an ad.

Prettiest Space Game On iOS, Galaxy On Fire 2, Releases Supernova Expansion - cultofmac.com
Galaxy on Fire 2 is perhaps the best-looking space game on iOS. With astronomical scenes that call to mind a portable Eve Online, Galaxy on Fire 2 is an action space shooter with RPG elements, such as upgraded ships and weaponry, questing systems, and the like. It’s even made the move to Mac OS X.
It’s been a couple of months since FishLabs, the developers behind the title, released a teaser trailer and a vague September timeline for a release date for the upcoming downloadable content (DLC) expansion, Supernova. Well, that date is actually here, as Supernova is available on both the iTunes and Mac App Stores, for iOS and Mac OS X,
