If you did, then you were wrong as Apple industrial designer Christopher Stringer testified as a witness in the case vs. Samsung today, revealing many details about the company's design process. In Court: Maniacal Apple Designers Around The Kitchen Table
In the first day of actual testimony today, US District Court got to hear from the first expert witness, Christopher Stringer, a long-time Apple designer who worked on the original iPHone designs. His testimony described Apple’s design team as a group of 16 “maniacal individuals” who spent a lot of their time around a kitchen table, brainstorming new products.
Stringer wore an off-white suite and narrow black tie to testify, an outfit to complement his long hair and salt-and-pepper beard. He told the jury, “Our role is to imagine products that don’t exist and guide them to life.”

Samsung Tried To Send Former Apple Designer $60 To Testify In Trial
Last week we found out that back in 2006 Apple Industrial Designer, Shin Nishibori, was asked to create mockups of what an iPhone-like device would look like if created by Sony. Nishibori’s prototype mockups have become a hot item of debate in the Apple vs Samsung trial as Samsung was hoping to use them as evidence that Apple copied Sony.
The court recently dismissed the images, but Samsung wanted to get their creator on the stand. Even though Shin Nishibori no longer works for Apple and now lives in Hawaii, Samsung was hoping to subpoena him to the court and have him testify against Apple. How were they going to get him there? A $60 check.Included in Shin Nishibori’s

There are many, many accusations being tossed back and forth between Apple and Samsung. There have been for months, there will continue to be. But perhaps none of them has perfectly distilled the fight that the two megacorps are having quite like Samsung's Chief Product Officer Kevin Packingham did in an interview today with Wired.
It's a matter, you see, of rectangles.
The Galaxy Tab has been banned off and on in both Europe and Australia for bearing too similar a resemblance to the iPad. Which, hey, at one point not even Samsung's lawyers could tell them apart! But, as Packingham explained to Wired,

Mountain Lion downloaded 3 million times over last four daysIn a press release, Apple today announced that Mountain Lion had been downloaded over 3 million times since launch, making it the “most successful” OS X release in Apple’s history. The $19.99 upgrade is available only via the Mac App Store but can be made into a USB Stick which would account for additional installs.
Doing a little of the maths, that’s close to $60 million in revenue for the cash-strapped Cupertino company.
“Just a year after the incredibly successful introduction of Lion, customers have downloaded Mountain Lion over three million times in just four days, making it our most successful release ever,” said Philip Schiller,

Samsung spills details on Odyssey and Marco Windows Phone 8 devices If you thought the Apple and Samsung legal tussles weren't getting interesting enough, another filing has revealed that the father of all smartphones Galaxy has at least two Windows Phone 8 devices in the pipeline. According to the filing that's been unearthed by The Verge, both are running on a dual-core 1.5Ghz Qualcomm MSM8960 chipset -- which is currently Samsung's chip of choice for LTE regions. The Odyssey looks set to be Samsung's high-end Windows Phone, with a 4.65-inch high-definition Super AMOLED display and NFC ready for Microsoft's own mobile payment plans. Meanwhile, the Marco will apparently forego the near-field delights and house a humbler 4-inch

According to Nick Bilton and Evelyn M. Rusli of the New York Times, Apple is discussing a possible investment in the growing social network Twitter. The investment is said to be worth somewhere in the hundreds of millions of dollars. The potential investment would bring Twitter’s valuation to around $10 billion.

NYT claims Apple has dallied with investing 'hundreds of millions' in Twitter Apple has been on a social networking kick lately, what with Twitter's footings in iOS 5 and OS X Mountain Lion as well as Facebook's upcoming presence in iOS 6. From what the New York Times hears, that fascination could become more of a fixation. The company has reportedly chatted with Twitter in past months about the possibility of investing money on the scale you'd normally expect from a later-stage venture capitalist: the newspaper is talking "hundreds of millions" of dollars based on Twitter being valued at more than $10 billion. I’ve used it for years, and it’s supported by a vast majority of Mac apps, including high-profile ones like the official Twitter client. When OS X 10.8 was announced, many people assumed Growl was dead. Because Growl uses it’s own banners and “Rollup” window (a place to collect missed notifications), it seemed that the overlap was too large and there would only be room for one notification system on OS X.
However, a new app called Hiss seeks to unify the two systems by putting your Growl notifications right into your Mountain

Beyond the numbers, there were some tantalizing tidbits about Apple and the company’s future plans during today’s quarterly financial call. Well, Duh: Apple Said To Release Adapter For The New iPhone’s Tiny Dock Connector
Earlier today, a Reuters report added more fuel to a particularly nitpicky fire — according to its typically unnamed sources, Apple’s new iPhone indeed sports a smaller, 19 pin dock connector instead of the 30 pin relic the company’s iDevices have clung to for years.
The news itself isn’t particularly shocking — our own John Biggs locked down the 19-pin number last month — but now a new report from iMore points to an even less surprising development. The Cupertino company is allegedly working on a dock connector adapter to keep those iDevice accessories from becoming completely obsolete, or so the story from

Now that Apple is fixing the in-app purchasing exploit that Russian hacker Alexei Borodin brought to light this week, it seems as if he’s at it again. This time, however, it’s an in-app purchasing hack that works in the Mac App Store.
The method here is similar as the one Borodin used in iOS, with the user installing some fake security certificates and then pointing the Mac’s DNS servers at a false server run by Borodin. The remote server then pretends to be the actual Mac Store and verifies the purchase, bypassing the real system for in-app purchases set up by Apple and use by developers of Mac apps. Borodin claims

Apple Takes Down iOS Game After Complaints From Torchlight’s Developer
About a week after an incredulous tweet from Runic Games, Apple has taken down Armed Heroes Online, an MMO for iOS.
In the tweet, Runic’s community manager Brian Ward claimed that assets were stolen from Torchlight – a Mac and PC game available on Steam – to be used in the iOS game by Entertainment Game Labs (EGLS).
“Players always come first,” EGLS told Joystiq in a statement. “There, we prefer to modify some parts of Armed Heroes Online where have caused those disputes rather than go on arguing. As long as this carves out a way out of angry disputes, it will be definitely worth our efforts.”

Managing iPhones And iPads? Don’t Forget Mobile App Management
Mobile management is no longer about just device management. App management is now a crucial part of the equation as well.
When Apple released iOS 4 two years ago, with a framework for device management built into the OS, the focus of IT departments and security specialists was to activate, configure, and lock down iPhones and iPad as well as other mobile devices. Mobile device management (MDM) was the big iOS-in-business buzz word for quite some time. Over the past several months, however, the discussion around mobile management has shifted significantly as a new concept has become the IT mantra for mobile devices.

AT&T appears set to control and charge for FaceTime over Cellular in iOS 6
Like it does with the iOS Personal Hotspot feature, U.S. carrier AT&T appears set to control and charge for the iOS 6 FaceTime over Cellular feature. This iOS 6 enhancement brings the formally WiFi only iOS device video calling feature into a more useful state, letting people use the feature practically anywhere they may be. AT&T provided us with the following statement:
We’re working closely with Apple on the new developer build of iOS6 and we’ll share more information with our customers as it becomes available.
We attempted to bring up the same same error message when enabling the FaceTime over Cellular feature on a Verizon iPad WiFi +

How Authoritarianism Will Lead To The Rise Of The Data Smuggler
David McCrory has developed the concept of data gravity. It dictates that data has its own mass. When data gets stored it becomes harder to move. The more data stored, the greater the mass.
The increasing efforts to control data provides a more dystopian vision about the future of transporting data. How does the data smuggler hide data of such weight when moving it from place to place?

Apple Investigating Workaround That Allows iPhone Users To Hack In-App PurchasesApple unveiled its iOS in-app purchasing system back in 2010.
This morning a story started circulating about a Russian hacker who had hijacked Apple’s in-app purchasing system in iOS. Alexey Borodin had figured out how to intercept in-app purchases within App Store apps to get free access to content. The most disturbing part of the “hack” was that it is actually fairly simple to replicate on any (non-jailbroken) iOS device.
Apple has now responded with an official statement saying that it is looking into the issue.
The Loop reports:

The other night, a friend and I happened upon a rather old, beat up photo booth. I love a photo booth. I will never not shell out a few bucks for a strip of pictures, when there's a photo booth near by. So you can imagine my frustration upon seeing the above pictured text on the old, graffitied-over screen.
Windows 2000 (!!!), which apparently it ran on, could not start, because a certain file was missing or corrupt. And in order to fix the damn thing, we would need to start Windows 2000 Setup using the original floppy disk (!?!) It wuddn't gonna happen.
Then—like a gnat

Did An Apple Store In Vancouver Just Get Punk’d By Samsung?
No sir, that’s not an Apple store you’re looking at, that there is a bona fide Samsung store. What looks like an episode of Punk’d, is actually Samsung’s first Canadian retail store in Metro Vancouver. This 140-square-metre store is located in Burnaby’s Metropolis at Metrotown and offers a plethora of Samsung’s latest mobile devices, as well as demo stations to see how they function and interact with other Samsung products such as TVs.
Samsung has been going toe-to-toe with Apple for a bit now and even though Samsung has every legitimate reason to open a retail store such as this, it just gives off that “nanny, nanny, poo, poo vibe.” Let’s just hope Apple

Just a quick update on the issues plaguing Apple’s iOS and Mac App Stores: Apple has now informed developers that it’s aware of the problem and is working on a resolution. For background, a serious problem has been discovered in the iOS and Mac App Stores which has been causing apps to immediately crash after users update to the most recent version. This is now day three of the problem, and Apple had yet to respond to the situation until this afternoon.

Spam-happy iOS trojan slips into App Store, gets pulled in rapid fashion You could call it technological baptism of sorts... just not the kind Apple would want. A Russian scam app known as Find and Call managed to hit the App Store and create havoc for those who dared a download, making it the first non-experimental malware to hit iOS without first needing a jailbreak. As Kaspersky found out, it wasn't just scamware, but a trojan: the title would swipe the contacts after asking permission, send them to a remote server behind the scenes and text spam the daylights out of any phone number in that list. Thankfully, Apple has already yanked the app quickly and explained to The Loop that the app was pulled

Today Windows Only Outsells Apple Products Two To One
Microsoft's once-unassailable lead has vanished
In its first year, the Mac sold just 372,000 units. PC clones were reaching two million units, or six times the amount of sales of the Mac. And things got worse from there, climbing to a vertiginous 60x by 2004.
Now, though, according to everybody’s favorite Apple analyst and Christopher Walken soundalike Horace Dediu, the gap has dropped to just 2:1 – if you count iOS in with OS X.
The numbers are startling, and Dediu’s graphs are as ever a fantastic visualization of the data. Since the peak year for Microsoft – 2004 – Mac and then iOS sales have outpaced the PC to reverse Microsoft’s seemingly unsurmountable

Let’s do this.
Apple and Samsung already narrowed the field of their California-based lawsuits against each other back in May of this year, pending a July 30 trial. Late yesterday, however, both parties filed a joint statement about narrowing the complaint field further in response to Judge Lucy Koh’s request they do so.
This makes perfect sense, especially when she already restricted their court time back in June. As Florian Mueller (FOSSPatents) points out, each of the large number of intellectual property (IP) arguments is already fairly complex. Trying to argue a ton of them at once would be

Samsung Galaxy Nexus temporarily taken-off Google Play shelves, in wake of recent legal rulings
In wake of Judge Koh rejecting Samsung’s request to thwart the preliminary injunction Apple gained on its Galaxy Nexus, the pure-Android smartphone has disappeared off the Google Play website this evening. It’s not clear if the removal is due to the phone being updated to the all new Jelly Bean or because of the injunction itself, but it certainly does make for interesting timing.
In the meantime, Google and Samsung are said to be working on a software patch to fix the issues that are causing legal happenings. A few months ago, the Galaxy Nexus dropped down to $399 and was dropped even lower to a solid $349 a few weeks later. Fast

Will A Software Patch Satisfy Apple’s Injunction Against Samsung? Google Hopes So.
Apple won a preliminary injunction against US sales of the Galaxy Nexus phone last week. Today, Samsung was denied a stay on the ban by Judge Judy Koh, the main judge in the current case brought to court against Samsung’s smartphone as well as its Galaxy Tab.
It may not matter as much, however, as Google and Samsung have readied a patch to address the specific grievance, according to a post on The Verge.
A Google spokesperson told The Verge that the update will roll out to all Galaxy Nexus devices in the US, regardless of carrier. It will limit the search bar on the homescreen and the voice search to only searching the web and not the local device
