Like its former co-CEO Mike Lazaridis, I studied electrical engineering at the University of Waterloo. I’ve seen RIM transform my home town over the years, giving it new parks, new buildings, huge bequests for the university, and the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics. I’d love to see it survive its current dire straits and somehow thrive. But I just can’t see it happening.
I guess it’s still just barely possible to maintain optimism. This was the first quarter since their rise that they’ve reported

Seeing Epson’s MegaPlex iOS device projector at tradeshows and in still pictures doesn’t do it justice. Set up in a small, awkward booth and surrounded by bright lights, the projector doesn’t usually inspire a second look. It wasn’t until I got a private screening at Macworld that I really saw what this thing could do.
The MegaPlex MG-850HD is an incredibly bright, 2800 lumen 720P projector with some mighty 10 watt stereo speakers built-in. But it adds something that you won’t find in many other high end consumer projectors: a 30-pin iOS device dock. The dock will accomodate

fireCore today announced that they have successfully jailbroken the Apple TV 2 (NOT the new AppleTV 1080P which was released earlier this month). The jailbreak is tethered which requires the AppleTV to be connected to a Mac/PC when first powering it on (only once). You also have to pay fireCore $30 but they’ve been plenty good about updating.
What’s new in the 5.0 AppleTV software? Should I update?
New interface: - Fast, visual access to all content choices

Seas0npass tethered jailbreak now available for Apple TV 2s running iOS 5.1 Apple TV owners no longer need to choose between jailbreaking or running the recently released iOS 5.1 update, now that FireCore has pushed new versions of Seas0nPass (0.8.3) and aTV Flash (black) (1.4.1). Currently, the jailbreak is still tethered, so if you should have to reboot your hockey puck, connecting it to a computer and repeating the process will be required. Unfortunately, the tools won't work on the new third generation Apple TVs yet, and even on supported hardware some plugins, like Plex and XBMC, are still listed as not working. All the details can be found beyond the source link for both the free Seas0nPass

This Creepy App Isn’t Just Stalking Women Without Their Knowledge, It’s A Wake-Up Call About Facebook Privacy
This app is meant to all be in good fun, but it's potentially a weapon in the hands of stalkers.
“Boy, you sure have a lot of apps on your phone.”
“Well, it’s my job.”
“What’s your favorite?”
“Oh, I couldn’t choose. But hey, want to see one to set your skin crawling?”
It was the flush end of a pleasurably hot day — 85 degrees in March — and we were all sipping bitter cocktails out in my friend’s backyard, which was both his smoking room, beer garden, viticetum, opossum parlor and barbecue pit. I was enjoying the warm dusk with a group of six of my best friends, all of whom seemed

Patently Apple does what they do and dug up a patent related to building 3D avatars:
Earlier today we introduced Apple’s 3D Avatar App which covered a basic overview of the new application in the works. Now a second patent application has surfaced and it actually shows that the app is already running on an iPad! We have the screenshot to prove it. The new patent application focuses on how the app will work with color palettes and more. The big news however is that the new 3D Avatar App is in its final stages of development and that’s very cool. Evidently phase-one of the application is geared for the younger crowd, but other editions could be

FiftyThree, a company that features folks who previously worked on the aforesaid Courier initiative, has just put forth a monumental effort dubbed Paper. The app, which is available for free in the App Store, is a sophisticated sketchbook with a highly unique user interface that's seemingly designed with the budding artist in mind. Put simply, the company feels that this app is "where ideas begin," enabling users to capture mental light bulbs as sketches, diagrams, illustrations, notes or drawings before sharing them across the web.Of course,

Amazon, Dell, HP & Sony Might Not Be Happy About Apple Helping Improve Foxconn Factory Conditions
The employees and customers of Apple might be pleased with the groundbreaking steps Foxconn and Cupertino have undertaken to guarantee the health, safety and mental well-being of their workers today… but Apple’s competition are probably not.
Apple’s move to help improve working conditions in its factories by putting its weight behind an independent Fair Labor Association audit of Foxconn’s facilities could indirectly raise costs (and lower margins) of products from Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Amazon, Motorola, Nokia, Sony and more.
According to Paul Martyn, vice president of Supply Strategy at BravoSolution, speaking to The Chicago

HTC Looking To Take On The iPod Touch With New Handheld Device, Kickstand Included
According to an HTC patent filed back in 2011 and a new device design discovered by Patent Bolt, it appears HTC is working on a handheld PMP device to rival the ever dominant iPod Touch. With companies like Philips, Sony, and Samsung all failing to chip away at the iPod Touch’s domination, I guess it couldn’t hurt to give HTC a chance. This new device combined with the new Google Play model could give this HTC device a fighting chance but I wouldn’t put my money on it.
This future HTC handheld device features slide-out stereo speakers on the front of the device, a kickstand on the back, and unlike most HTC handheld patents, makes no reference to

Apple has released Safari 5.1.5 in Software Update with a fix for those running the browser in 32-bit mode. The small update doesn’t have any known changes other than the 32-bit fix, and it weighs in at a slim 46.4 MB. The update will still require you to restart your computer, sadly. The last public release of Safari was version 5.1.4 on March 12th.
Safari 5.2 is currently in the hands of developers. The next major iteration to Apple’s browser includes great Mountain Lion features like iCloud tabs, a unified address bar, and more.

Apple Rejecting Apps That Access iOS Device Unique Identifiers Amid Privacy Concerns
Apple warned the iOS development community last August that it would start rejecting applications submitted to the App Store for accessing a user’s unique identifier (UDID). In case you didn’t know, every iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad possesses a unique alphanumeric string used for registration and tracking.
Amid privacy concerns from the U.S. Congress and other groups regarding how apps use an iOS device’s personal info, Apple has decided to start enforcing its new policy in the App Store.
TechCrunch reports:

New Apple TV UI Was Rejected By Steve Jobs Five Years Ago, Says Former Engineer Michael Margolis, a former Apple software engineer who worked on the Apple TV and "implemented much of the AppleTV 2.0 UI years ago" claims that its recently unveiled new UI isn't so new.
In a 'Fun fact' tweet he posted yesterday, Margolis points out that the new UI designs were actually tossed out five years ago because Steve Jobs didn't like them. But now that Jobs has passed, there's no one at Apple to say "no" to bad design.
However, in the comments section of another post about the tweet over on The Next Web, Margolis later clarified what elements in the UI Jobs specifically didn't like, and conceded that the updates are probably a smart move to bring the

What the new iPad and Mountain Lion tell us about Apple’s upcoming Retina Macs
It has been clear for a while now that iOS devices are not the only Apple products to benefit from Retina displays. The Mac OS has teased us for a while with HiDPI Retina images, and the most recent is the inclusion of 2X images in Messages in Mountain Lion.
So, what does this mean for upcoming Macs? A lot…
If you look at the tradeoffs Apple made with the new iPad to get it to Retina quality, it is pretty clear that HiDPI will have a big influence on Macs too.
Display: Obviously, an upcoming round of Macs will have super-high resolution displays. It does not necessarily mean the displays will have double the pixels from their current sizes,

Weightless files and tiny players let you carry your entire library around with you, all the time. Anything you wanted to listen to - so long as you had already hunted it down - was available instantaneously with a swipe of the finger. No longer would we be limited by what we could physically carry, or what a radio network chose to play.

Apple today updated its Movie Trailers.app to Retina graphics which you’ll immediately notice bring videos to a higher 1080P quality.
iTunes Move Trailers 1.1 is now designed for the spectacular Retina display on the all new iPad.
This would have been a good app to have ready at launch to showcase the Retina display. Either way, the video quality is impressive to the point that it makes the app addictive.

Maybe the New iPad Is Hot Because Its Processor Is 310% Huger Apple's unapologetically selling a new iPad that'll go up to 116 degrees in your hands while playing a game. Maybe they should have done something about that, yeah. But the tablet's new processor is so massive, we shouldn't be surprised.
Chipworks, which compared the new hotness (am I right?) on the right to the first iPad's A4 processor on left, has a pretty striking comparison on its hands:
The Apple A4, which by all accounts is still commercially viable given the price of used Apple products on craigslist, measured in at 53.3 mm². Only two (and a half?) generations later, we have the Apple A5X weighing in at 165 mm² – a whopping 310% larger.
It's worth noting

Apple’s iPhoto For iOS Tops 1 Million Users
With a metric that’s bound to make mobile app developers jealous, Apple has confirmed that its newly launched iOS-compatible version of iPhoto hit the 1 million user mark, only 10 days after its release. That’s not app downloads, mind you, but unique users. Given the app’s universal nature, it’s likely that many are installing it at least twice – once on the iPhone, or possibly the iPod Touch, and then again on the iPad. But Apple is counting such an installation only once in this metric. The number of actual downloads may be much higher.
This figure was reported first by The Loop, but Apple confirmed to us the same thing – 1 million in 10 days. That doesn’t mean as of today, to be

Twice the LEDs: That means more heat coming from more LEDs. This is especially a problem at full brightness.
2.5X the power needed: The brightness efficiency is lower because the new iPad has more pixels (which means more transistors) compared to the iPad 2. More pixels and transistors take up more space, meaning less opportunity for light to pass. “So they basically have to blast light through the LCD to make it come out.” Soneira adds: “I measured the LED power at maximum

Heavy-handed iPhone and iPad Management Is Really Just Old Thinking By IT Directors
Too much device management ties the hands of users and pits them against IT
A year or two ago, IT departments were focused on mobile device management (MDM) as a way to secure smartphones and other mobile devices. It was a natural extension of how IT had always handled technology in the workplace. While there are times that strict device management is the best approach (such as K-12 schools), IT departments are begging to realize that MDM isn’t always the course of action.
In fact, the rush to lock down every device feature was little more than stale and rather old thinking on the parts of IT leaders who are now looking for better options.

Cult of Mac’s New Tee Is Inspired By 100% Vintage Apple
In our new Apple-inspired graphic tee, Cult Of Mac reached back into the year 1983 to breathe new life into this classic Steve Jobs creation.
The Apple Lisa computer debuted with a mere $10,000 price tag, but her epic cost left her lonely with nary a desk to sit upon. We liked her sexy style and vintage look though, so partnered with Seattle indie brand Might Tees to make her sexy-curves available again on our new In Love With Lisa graphic tee.
But here’s the best part: this new tee is finely crafted and printed right here in the beautiful USA, ships worldwide, and is available now for just $25 — only .0025% her original selling

Visualized: new iPad burns 10 degrees hotter than its predecessor We wouldn't exactly be going out on a limb by suggesting that the new iPad is Apple's hottest tablet to date -- even before Tim Cook confirmed as much earlier today. But while Apple has plenty of reason to brag about the device's sales figures, it's slightly less motivated to be forthcoming about its tendencies to create more heat. 10 degrees more, in fact, according to infrared camera confirmation obtained by Tweakers.net. After five minutes of running GLBenchmark, the site used its infrared cam to confirm what many of you have already suggested: the new iPad runs a little hot. Apple Announces Mysterious Conference Call to Tell What They Will Do With All Their Billions Tomorrow This is strange. Apple's CEO Tim Cook and Apple's CFO Peter Oppenheimer will host a special conference tomorrow. The topic: "the outcome of the Company's discussions concerning its cash balance." That's $100,000 million in cash, people. They can buy bloody Walmart.
They say they "will not be providing an update on the current quarter nor will any topics be discussed other than cash." So what would they be announcing? Perhaps some acquisition? New investments? Buy every single phone manufacturer in the planet? (They can!) Or maybe something as mundane as some extra dividends for shareholders?

But Forth Dimension Displays have managed to squeeze that same number of pixels into a display that's smaller than an inch.
And since Apple claims that it's impossible for the human eye to discern individual pixels on their Retina Displays, you might wonder what's the point of having so many pixels on such a tiny display unless you intend to hold it right up to your eye. But that's exactly what they've been designed for.

Review: 24 hours with the new iPad…

My new iPad came to my door while I was filming the long lines at New York’s Grand Central and 5th Avenue Stores yesterday. I got home at around 2 and have been playing with it almost non-stop since. Here are my first impressions:
I’m sad to report that I’m not as off-the-wall impressed with the new iPad as most of the other reviews I’ve read (except maybe David Pogue’s). It is absolutely a top-notch Apple product and easily the best tablet on the market, but its tradeoffs won’t be appreciated by all.
The Retina display is by far the biggest new feature and certainly impressive. However, it isn’t a life

Final ITC ruling affirms Motorola Mobility didn't violate Apple's patents The preliminary decision already determined that, in this case, Motorola Mobility hadn't violated any of Apple's patents with its Droid series, and now a final review has affirmed those initial findings. While this might not be a massive turn up for the books, it does close the doors on at least one big name patent dispute. That said, Apple can appeal to the Federal Circuit, and given that it has done before, it's likely the iPad maker will do so here. But, for now at least, it's cork popping time over in Libertyville.Final ITC ruling affirms Motorola Mobility didn't violate Apple's patents originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 17 Mar 2012 12:38:00 EDT.

The Agony And Ecstasy Of Mike Daisey
It seems that noted firebrand Mike Daisey’s story – the one about the crippled, underaged factory workers who unspooled tales of woe and torture at the hands of their evil Foxconn masters at Apple’s behest- was at least partially fabricated. He was outed as, at best, a bad journalist and at worst, a fraud. To be clear, he’s a monologist and playwright and had no business telling this story (just as he really had no business telling Amazon’s story way back when) but he, like so many creatives, riffed on science and technology for popular effect and got both drastically wrong.

New OS X 10.8 beta adds Twitter notifications, contact access requests, iCloud Safari tabs
Earlier today, Apple seeded their second developer preview of the upcoming OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion release. As Apple noted when introducing the new OS X software product earlier this year, the new version is all about bringing iOS 5 features to the Mac. This includes popular iOS features like Game Center, Notification Center, AirPlay Mirroring, and Messages. Since the release of the new beta earlier today, a few notable additions have been spotted.
Twitter in Notification Center:
While promised when Mountain Lion was introduced, developer preview 2 now allows developers and testers the ability to receive Twitter for Mac notifications.

Apple has seeded OS X Lion 10.7.4 to registered developers following the release of the second Mountain Lion developer preview this afternoon. Lion 10.7.4 can be downloaded now in the Mac Dev Center. The release weighs in at 1.33 GB for the combo update and 580 MB for the delta version.
10.7.4 (Build 11E27) will be deployed to the public once Apple gets the kinks ironed out with developers. A server version of Lion has also been seeded to accompany 10.7.4. The last version of Lion to go public was 10.7.3 at the beginning of February. A supplemental update was released last week to solve an issue with malfunctioning Time Machine backups.

My First Impressions Of The New iPad: Like Putting On A Pair Of GlassesThe new iPad. Now with more pixels.
I was fortunate to get my hands on a new iPad a little earlier than expected, and I’ve been playing around with it and comparing it to my iPad 2. I’ve read all the early reviews from the likes of Walt Mossberg and Joshua Topolsky, and I’m sure you have to, so I won’t waste your time rehashing what you’ve already read.
The new iPad is great. It really is. If you’ve never owned an iPad before, this third-gen iteration will blow your mind. It’s by far the best tablet on the market in every way. Nothing compares. It’s not perfect, but it’s about as close as you can get right now.
Here are some of the highlights

Last night the web was assaulted with a slew of new iPad reviews. Sure, some of the reviewers remarked on a few silly things that they didn’t like, but the early reviews were overwhelmingly positive. Did Apple’s handpicked early reviewers really really like the new iPad? Or were they holding back criticism because they wanted to stay in Apple’s good graces? Maybe it was both. iPhone Mug Case Lets You Reach For a Half-Cup of Stupidity Apple employs countless designers and engineers who do everything they can to squeeze as much functionality into the iPhone while keeping it slim and pocket-friendly—only to have case makers come along and create monstrosities like this ridiculous half mug.
Its website points out that the handle makes the iPhone easier to hold, provides a place to wrap your headphones, and can be used to prop it up for hands-free enjoyment. But it fails to mention that it makes your phone about five times as thick—ensuring you'll never squeeze it into your back pocket again—and will make you look like a fool while placing a call.

Apple Expected To Sell Over 1 Million iPads This Friday The post-PC revolution is here.
Apple announced over the weekend that it had completely sold out of its pre-order stock for the new iPad, stating that demand for the new tablet is “off the charts.” Now analyst Gene Munster is predicting that Apple will sell over 1 million units during the new iPad launch this Friday, March 16th.
Munster says that if the average selling price of the new iPad is $650 (the different storage models and 4G versions need to be considered), Apple would net a cool $650 million on launch day. Considering it only costs Apple about $310 to make each iPad, that’s quite the profit margin.
The original iPad moved 300,000 units on its launch day back in 2010.

How To Enable Hidden Debug Settings On The iPhone
There are a host of hidden debug settings in iOS that developers, security researchers, hackers, and others use to analyze data and fix errors. While most normal users won’t care to look through their iMessage logs, the more inquisitive may feel dangerous enough to try.
There are actually some practical reasons to use iOS debug tools. If you encounter an annoying bug it is much more likely to get solved by logging the issue to then examine later. Such information can also help developers pinpoint issues and bugs in their apps.
The mastermind known as “chronic” has posted iOS user profiles to enable hidden debug tools for Bluetooth, Messages, and FaceTime on the iPhone. By

Back in the halcyon days of the early '90s, Apple revealed the WALT (Wizzy Active Lifestyle Telephone) at Macworld Boston, touting a fairly amazing feature set. Things like a touchscreen, handwriting recognition, fax support, an address book, caller ID, online banking and a speakerphone set it apart from the landline devices of its day, and being that it was co-developed with Bell South, it's pretty clear that your pops had his eye one at some point. Why Apple will Crush Microsoft in the Post-PC Era
Apple CEO Tim Cook this week talked about a “post-PC world.” Many people treated his comments as controversial, exaggerated or outright marketing lies.
In fact, everything Cook said about it was literally true and perfectly accurate. He said the post-PC revolution “is happening all around us at an amazing pace and Apple is at the forefront and leading this revolution.”
He didn’t say we currently live in a post-PC world, or that in the future PCs would not exist. He specifically said “we’re talking about a world where the PC is no longer the center of your digital world.”

Apple Goes Big In Texas With $304 Million Austin Campus
Most of the news around Austin this week is centered around SXSW, naturally, but Texas Governor (and erstwhile presidential candidate) Rick Perry broke some news today that’s unrelated, but still Austin-relevant. Apple, it seems, which has been slowly growing its presence in the state’s tech oasis, chose SXSW weekend as an auspicious time to announce a major new campus in Austin.
There isn’t much known about the campus or its purpose, but Perry’s announcement does note that the price tag is a hefty $304 million, so it’s more than just a new building or two on the existing Riata Vista Circle. It’s estimated that it will add 3,600 jobs

Tim Cook responds to customer email, confirms Siri Italian language support coming this year
According to a post over on melablog.it, Apple CEO Tim Cook has apparently responded to a customer email regarding Italian language support in Siri. Apple website already lists Italian, alongside Chinese, Korean, and Spanish as languages to be supported sometime in 2012, but Tim’s email confirms the feature is still on track for release this year. It also confirms Tim will be keeping up the tradition of answering customer emails. The customer asked Cook why Italy wasn’t a focus at the launch of products, pointing to Siri and the fact Italy isn’t typically included in the list of initial launch countries:

iPad 2 discounted as low as $360, BestBuy drops entire lineup by $100
During the new iPad unveiling yesterday, Apple announced it would drop the price of the 16GB iPad 2 to $399 with the Wi-Fi + 3G model discounted to $529. This was, of course, to make room for the new iPad, which would start at $499 for the 16GB Wi-Fi model and $629 for the 16GB Wi-Fi + 4G model. We knew the price drop would likely be implemented by the new iPad’s March 16 launch date, but it seems BestBuy and other retailers are already offering the new prices. BestBuy is now advertising not just the 16GB models, but the entire iPad 2 lineup, for $100 off the usual pricing. However, the best price we have been able to find comes from Micro Center. It is

AT&T vs. Verizon LTE smackdown! Tests from Yerba Buena today
We’ve tested AT&T vs. Verizon’s LTE in NYC and our guy on the ground in San Francisco was able to test LTE at Yerba Buena today. Results? AT&T smoked Verizon in a bunch of areas around the “new iPad” event.
Those are similar to the results in NYC and we hear the same thing happens in Irvine, CA, for instance.
Why is this? We have out theories.
One major reason is that Verizon’s network is already pretty full of Androids running 4G while AT&T has only released a handful of devices with LTE. (this might also be why Apple used AT&T LTE at the event today) The story might change when the flood of iPads come crashing in

The Reason Apple Named It “The New iPad”
Thousands of Apple fans let their jaws hit the floor earlier today when Apple announced “the new iPad.” There was no “iPad 3,” no “iPad HD,” no “iPad Epic Pro Super X 4G LTE Touch.” Just iPad. Apple broke the numbering scheme and went back to the basics.
Why? Apple VP of Worldwide Product Marketing Phil Schiller revealed the answer after today’s keynote.
When asked by The Wall Street Journal, Schiller said Apple called it “iPad” because “we don’t want to be predictable.” That’s it. No other explanation. No long-winded rant about how the iPad is leading a revolution that’s changing the world and ushering in a new age of incredibleness. No marketing

Reports claim the new iPad will actually be called the ‘iPad HD’
According to both CNET and VentureBeat, Apple’s new iPad won’t be officially called “iPad 3,” but rather “iPad HD.” The “HD” suffix is a nod to the new iPad biggest upgrade: the high-definition Retina Display. The Verge reported last year that the new iPad would be called the “iPad HD,” so it’s worth taking a look at their surrounding iPad HD rumors from last year. The Verge’s report called for some new professional software for the iPad HD, and also said the device would be marketed as a new high-end iPad, and the iPad 2 would continue to sell. However, our

In recent months, the increasingly unreliable Digitimes seems quite confident that “Apple is likely to launch a 7.85-inch iPad.” A recent report from the publication in December claimed a 7.85-inch iPad would begin production in Q2 2012 with a launch for the fourth quarter following a “new iPad” (presumably iPad 3) in Q1. The reports keep surfacing today with Digitimes pointing to a report from United Evening News and Oled-Display referring to a “Samsung Securities” document from December that mentions a 7-inch iPad.

More 'iPad 3' prototype parts show up, we go hands-on In recent years, it's become a fashion for Apple prototype parts to pop up just weeks ahead of hardware launches; and it seems like there's no exception for the upcoming next-gen iPad, which is believed to feature a 2,048 x 1,536 IPS LCD within the same 9.7-inch footprint. While we're only two days away from seeing Tim Cook and co. unveiling said tablet, we couldn't help but take a look at its bits and bobs acquired by our good friends over at M.I.C. Senator calls for FTC investigation of Apple and Google over stealth photo uploading capabilities
Is this how we’ll have to open apps in the future?
When we broke the news that iOS (and later Android) apps could upload your photo library (along with videos, calendars and even record A/V), we knew some people would be upset:
Congress became involved and probably motivated the move , but the legislative body is not going to like what it hears.
The problem is that iOS apps not only have access to a user’s contacts database (including addresses and notes), but apps also have full and unencumbered access to everything in the iOS app sandbox, such as pictures, music, movies, calendars, and a host of other data. Any of this

There are two sayings on the back of every Apple product: Designed By Apple in California and Assembled in China. These statements attempt to say that even though the products might be assembled in a different country, Apple is an American company — a fact Apple proclaimed loudly today with a new web page titled Creating jobs through innovation.
Apple has been under fire lately regarding its overseas manufacturing partners. Apple hired the Fair Labor Association to conduct voluntary audits of the final assembly partners, including Foxconn’s massive Asian facilities. But consumers and activists alike aren’t buying it. It’s a smokescreen, they say. Foxconn will just

Apple acknowledges use of Corning Gorilla Glass on iPhone, means Gorilla Glass 2 likely for iPhone 5Apple’s relationship with Corning has always remained shrouded in mystery. The relationship started famously when Steve Jobs visited Corning Headquarters in 2006 and told CEO Wendell Weeks not to be afraid to make the stuff. Corning however never made it into Apple marketing material after that and even isn’t included in Apple’s supplier lists (PDF).
That and Apple’s reliance on Asian parts materials makers had led some to believe that Apple had gone to Asian glass manufacturers for their iPhone production.
In the New York Times’ iEconomy series, Corning is said to have shifted its glass

Apple name-drops Corning as iPhone glass manufacturer, we feign surprise For a company so focused on secrecy, Apple never really did all that good of a job keeping its connection with Corning under wraps. We've always suspected that the company enlisted the Gorilla Glass maker for the iPhone, though it didn't really go out of its way to admit it -- even going so far as omitting the New York-based company from its 2011 suppliers list. Cupertino offered it a little love today, however, giving Corning a nod in its chipper job creation report. Why ‘Mastered For iTunes’ Won’t Defuse a Copyright Time Bomb Next year, a time bomb embedded in the Copyright Act of 1976 starts to detonate, as valuable copyrights fall back into the hands of artists who decide that they would prefer to own their songs, rather than allowing their label and publisher to keep selling them.
Recordings released in 1978 will be up for copyright termination in 2013, even if artists legally sold those songs away decades ago. Recordings from 1979 fall into this category in 2014, and so on, over the years.
These are valuable copyrights, useful for licensing in movies, advertisements, and videogames in addition to being sold in iTunes and elsewhere. Wouldn't it be convenient if the labels could devise a way
