Foki vacuum footwear concept lets you walk in Roomba's shoes
They may not be the first vacuum shoes to emerge in concept form, but these so-called Foki shoes from designer Adika Titut Triyugo are certainly the most stylish -- at least in an ASIMO chic sort of way. They also boast a few new tricks not seen before, including an LED display on top that indicates how much dirt you've picked up, and a unique deign that allows them to be completely folded up when not in use. Of course, "concept" is the key word here, but we've got to guess there's an untapped
Adobe gives the sack to Project Rome design app
Just over a month ago we told you about a new content and website creation app called Project Rome that Adobe had released for a public trial. We just got a note from Adobe and a link to a forum post saying in essence ... never mind. Based on feedback from users, Adobe has decided to abandon development of the product after just a few weeks of public availability.
Adobe has not given any specific reasons for canceling Rome, but our own brief trial showed its capabilities to be pretty

Apple forces PhotoFast to abandon 256GB upgrade kit for MacBook Airs
Remember that peppy aftermarket 256GB SSD upgrade from PhotoFast that easily smoked (on paper anyway) the SSD found in Apple's latest MacBook Air? It's been halted before it went on sale upon Apple's request, similarly to those HyperMac batteries before it. 9to5Mac first reported the news based on a source close to the company and we just confirmed it directly with the PhotoFast GM2_SFV1_Air product manager. The risk of losing access to Apple's product licensing program was just too grave a
If Causes Had Its Own Social Network It Would Be Jumo
Facebook co-founder and former Obama social media guru Chris Hughes has just launched Jumo, a social network for charities, in beta today. Jumo aims to help you discover what causes matter to you by allowing you follow specific charities as well as keep tabs on what your friends are following. Seems simple enough.
On Jumo each cause/charity has its own relevant news stream, sort of like what would happen if the Facebook app “Causes,” coincidentally started by Sean Parker and

LG Star shows up again, flexes its Tegra 2 muscle for the camera
That high-end Android smartphone from LG seemingly destined for release early next year has made another appearance -- and this time, the UI's in full view and showing us a few tricks. Looks like the so-called Star will be running a variant of LG's usual Android skin, for better or worse, and the particular device shown off in Phandroid's forums here is loaded with Froyo -- a strange choice for a 4-inch beast launching in 2011 with Gingerbread around the corner, perhaps, but we certainly

Apple hires patent lawyer army as Nokia ITC hearing begins

Blue Lighting Wakes Schoolkids Up [Lighting]
I tell you what, I could do with some of this "blue lighting" each morning when I start work at 7.30. Being tested in a British school, Philips' blue-tinted light wakes kids up and makes them perform better.
In fact, previous tests have found that when the blue light is switched on, hyperactivity falls by 77 per cent; reading speed increases by 35 per cent and the number of errors actually fell by 45 per cent. The lighting system has four different light cycles for various times of the day

Nao developer program kicks off: $4,800, robot included
We've been following Aldebaran Robotics' Nao humanoid robot literally since it took its first steps, and it looks like interested developers will finally be able to get their hands on a bot of their own quite soon. To do so, they'll have to sign up and quality for the just-launched Nao developer program, which costs €3,600 (or roughly $ 4,800) and will initially be limited to just 200 participants. That hefty price does naturally include the robot itself, along with a complete software

Sony aims for half of Japan's e-reader market by 2012
Given the dominance of Sony's Walkman over in the Land of the Rising Sun, it's a little surprising to think that Sony has been all but silent regarding the Japanese e-reader market. We heard back in May that the mega-corp was planning an e-reader launch in Japan by the year's end, aiming to build out an elaborate e-book distribution platform with local telecom operator KDDI. Fast forward a few months, and it seems as if thing's are finally falling into place. New reports are suggesting that the

Associated Press (Or CBS) Surrenders Their Dignity
A lot of people out there still seem to think that all blogs do is riff off of major media content. Reblog it, or just plain plagiarism. Most people know that most major news is now broken by blogs, but the prejudice is still out there.
One thing we abhor is “the unattributed rewrite,” When some publication takes a story that was broken by someone else and simply rewrites the same story in their own words without any attribution to the source of the story. It’s just not done

Google’s Internal Chrome OS Netbooks Codenamed “Mario” And “Andretti”?
So, it appears that the first Chrome OS netbooks are set to launch in the next few weeks. And it now appears that the first ones will be Google-branded versions, built by a third-party manufacturer. And you can be sure that Google is already testing these internally, as they do this for basically all of their products leading up to launch. And a few more hints about them may reside in the Chromium issue tracker.

Toshiba and Vizio expected to join Google TV bandwagon in January
Content providers might be banning Google TV left, right, and center, but hardware partners don't seem to be losing any enthusiasm. After Samsung openly admitted to contemplating a HDTV with Google TV hardware and software built right in, Toshiba and Vizio are now said to have firm plans to introduce such new products at January's CES 2011. While neither manufacturer would be drawn into confirming this latest bit of insider info, Toshiba's American GM, Jeff Barney, is quoted as saying, "Google
Stack Overflow Hits 10M Uniques, Boldly Goes Where No Q&A Site Has Gone Before
It seems as though Q&A network Stack Overflow has put the $ 6 million in funding it received back in May to good use, crossing the 10 million unique monthly visit mark as of yesterday. While Q&A sites like Quora bank on the winning model being one big monolithic site, Stack Overflow is showing success by carefully separating the Q&A game into different communities, launching 34 different sites on topics as diverse as Bicycling, Cooking and IT Security.

Squirt water gun robot pesters raccoons, takes orders from Android (video)
It's not uncommon to see Mr. Android and Sir Arduino team up in the world of homegrown robotics, but Squirt has managed to hop out of the me-too crowd with a downright charming control scheme (and even more charming looks). Put simply, this water gun robot was designed to "water plants and chase away raccoons," but from a broader perspective, the creator was looking to demonstrate how robotics could be used in small irrigation and well systems. Better still, this is far more than just a robot

The SHOWWX+ pico-projector from MicroVision could be the ultimate movie-accessory for your iPad. The plus-sign in the name designates that the new projector is 50-percent brighter than its predecessor, so you might be able to get that 100-inch image without closing all the curtains and killing the lights.

The TSA in Action: Loaded Gun Magazine Found on Plane [Homeland Security]
A loaded gun magazine was found in the seat-back pocket of a Southwest Airlines plane. By a kid. Don't sweat it, though. It was only left behind by a federal law enforcement agent!
The magazine got kicked out of the pocket and on to the floor by some (terrorist?) kid crawling around on the seats after the plane had landed in Phoenix. The flight attendant picked it up (she wouldn't even let the nosy CNN photographer take a look at it!), passengers had to go through extra screening, and

Redsn0w updated for iOS 4.2.1 Jailbreak
The Dev-Team Blog was just updated with a new redsn0w version 0.9.6b4 jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1. Unfortunately, iPhone 4, iPad, and newer iPhone 3GS owners won't find jailbreaking as easy as navigating to a website -- the 4.2.1 jailbreak is currently "tethered" so you'll have to reattach to a PC or Mac each time your device loses power or needs a reboot. Those of you who rely on ultrasn0w unlock should hold off for now. Good advice for anyone not comfortable with terms like "SHSH blobs" or

Spotify’s £16.66m Loss In 2009 – A Rumoured U.S. Launch Is Now Imperative
Music blog Musically has jumped on the new accounts of Spotify’s UK Limited company to reveal some interesting figures, to say the least. The accounts also reveal that at the end of 2009, Spotify’s parent company Spotify Technology SA was negotiating further funding.
The most interesting stat, to me at least is that Spotify started 2009 with around one million users and ended with seven million users across Europe, of whom over 250,000 were paid-up subscribers. That is a sevenfold

A Dog-Shaped Vacuum is One of the Least-Silly Ideas From the '70s [Concepts]
I wish I had some of the foresight of this patent-filer from back in '73. I wonder if she's cursing the day her dog-shaped vacuum failed to take off, now Dyson's launched their dog-grooming vacuum tool?
Ann Margaret Zelski filed the patent in 1973 for this dog-shaped vacuum, which was intended to be used around dogs, to suck up their hair. As you know, most furry friends are scared of the noise of vacuums (my parents' golden retriever hides under the bed until the cleaner is switched off

We don't usually find our latest tech news in Women's Wear Daily yet the publication seems to have scooped Rupert Murdoch's plans for a tablet-only newspaper called The Daily -- news now seemingly confirmed by the New York Times. Scheduled for release early next year, The Daily is expected to cost 99 cents per week (about $ 4.25 per month) for an electronic paper published seven days a week by a 100-member strong newsroom staffed with "twentysomething" talent led by a former managing editor

They said they'd do it, and by golly, it's been done -- a specially-equipped Audi TTS drove the entire 12.42 miles and 156 precarious turns of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb without a driver at the wheel. (Google, eat your heart out.) While the vehicle technically performed the feat about a month ago in September, Audi decided to wait until this last week to proclaim it to the world, following a helicopter accident during filming that sent pilot Jim Dirker to the hospital. Canadian thieves steal $1 million in Sony PlayStation goods, couldn't wait any longer for GT5
Crime doesn't pay, folks, but sometimes you have to be at least somewhat amused by the shenanigans of those who operate beneath the law. Workers at a shipping facility in Brampton, Ontario discovered on Monday that a trailer containing $ 500,000 worth of Sony goods was stolen. Apparently whatever measures they took to prevent a recurrence were insufficient, because the very next day a second trailer went missing containing even more PS3 and PSP games and hardware. Screen Grabs: Someone named Jesse McCartney uses his Motorola Flipout to stare at some poor girl's backside
Pop musicians have been endorsing products as long as they've existed (who could forget Beatles toothpaste, Ricky Nelson hand sanitizer, or Enrico "The Great Caruso" Caruso-brand horse polish?), but for some reason the convergence of the two never fails to amuse (and annoy) us. Even more so when sensible boy band yelper Jesse McCartney, um, flips out his Motorola Flipout Android phone to surreptitiously film some hard working dancer's backside. We smell a Hasbro lawsuit coming with this one, but for now AutoBot is a funky name for a potentially great iPhone and Android app. Working in concert with a Bluetooth OBD-II dongle (not unlike the Superchips Vivid), it lets you diagnose engine troubles, keep track of maintenance, and locate your car via GPS coordinates -- useful for when some Decepticon tries to make off with your ride or when you're simply running low on energon and can't remember where you parked. It can even be configured

Magellan updates RoadMate with free traffic and iOS 4 support
It was almost exactly a year ago that I reviewed the first version of the Magellan RoadMate app for the iPhone. Over the last several months the price has dropped, and features have been added.
In the latest update of the app, released this week, RoadMate USA now fully supports multitasking and fast application switching. If you are listening to music, it fades it for voice announcements, and voice guidance continues if you switch to another app. There is also an option to pause audio, which is

Apple creates trailer video for iAds, you buying?
Interested in how Apple is advertising iAds to advertisers? Well they’ve got a brand new highlight video up on Apple.com that’ll give you a good idea. The emotion of TV. The interactivity of digital. The power of Mobility. Indeed.
We only have two questions. Was it made with iMovie 11’s trailer feature, and is it enough to get Mad Men-types to buy buys in hopes of attracting buyers?

Print Wirelessly From iPad to Any Printer? There’s an App for That
One of the features pulled from the iOS 4.2 update at the last minute was the ability to print to any printer connected to your Mac (more correctly, the functionality was not added in OS X 10.6.5). Printopia, from Ecamm, solves this, without any messy hacks, and it adds more besides.
You can still print from an iPad to a purpose-made AirPrint printer, but who wants to buy a printer these days? Nope, better to repurpose the piece of junk you already have (and lets face it, nobody has ever

Accel Selling Big Chunks Of Facebook Stock
Sometime in the last week or so, we’ve heard from multiple sources, Accel Partners has sold very significant chunks of Facebook stock. So significant, in fact, that their ownership percentage has dropped to a point where they are no longer the largest venture shareholder in the company.
Prior to the sale they had somewhere around 10% of Facebook. They paid just $ 12.7 million for that stock, in 2005. Our understanding is they sold somewhere around 20% of that position, meaning they own

Nokero's solar-powered, rainproof N200 light bulb: brighter, stronger, more flexible
No one's going to be calling Nokero out for falling behind. Just a few short months after revealing its first commercial light bulb for developing nations, the outfit has now rolled out a second version, the predictably titled N200. This guy strikes a vastly different pose compared to the original, with the LED enclosure hanging on a swivel that enables it to be positioned in a way that would optimally catch light. When night falls, users can flip the light north to create a lantern. Nokero

YC-Funded Fabricly Is A Threadless For High Fashion, And It Just Raised $400K
I can’t say I know a whole lot about fashion. But, having accidentally walked into a few boutiques over the years, I’ve gathered one thing: it’s expensive. And I’m told it’s also a very competitive market — designers vie to have their products manufactured by clothiers, who in turn have the question of whether consumers will actually buy their products looming large. These clothing companies do have outlets like Gilt Groupe in case they wind up with excess

We might be busy refilling our inkwells in preparation for CES 2011, but let's not forget that some of the CES 2010 exhibitors are still working feverishly on bringing their innovations to market. Copia is one such company, though in the time between its January debut and today it's had to abandon its plans for own-brand e-readers and has fully transitioned itself into a software offering -- with apps available for the desktop, iPad, Windows Phone 7 now, and Android and other touch devices

Mac OS X 10.6.5 fixes MacBook Air display issues
As noted by Mac Rumors, the Mac OS X 10.6.5 software update released last week fixes the display issues some owners were having with their new MacBook Airs. In a new support document released today titled MacBook Air (Late 2010): Video anomalies after waking from sleep, Apple describes the symptoms as "After waking from sleep, your MacBook Air display may flicker or fade from light to dark repeatedly." Their solution: "Download and apply the Mac OS X v10.6.5 update to resolve this issue."

Griffin iPod Nano Strap is a Colorful 80s Throwback
Somehow, Griffin has managed to take a laundry-list of dork-tastic follies and combine them into a single product that actually looks quite good. It’s called the Slap, and it turns your iPod Nano into a watch.
The Slap is a version of those old slap bracelets that are still used to make reflective cuffs for cyclists. Inside is a strip of memory-metal that you can straighten out, but that instantly circles your arm and grips it when you slap it against your wrist.

iPad now on sale at Sam's Club
Not only can you buy a jar full of more pickles than a human could ever eat, you can also now pick up an iPad at your local Sam's Club. Apple's magical and revolutionary device has been spotted on shelves at Sam Walton's big box supply store, and pretty cheap, too -- you can get a 16GB Wi-Fi model for just $ 488, $ 11 cheaper than it is on Apple's online store. The only problem is that you have to buy a big box of 30 at a time to get that price.

Japan's Ministry of Defense shows off flying surveillance drone
It may not be quite as menacing as some other surveillance drones, but this new flying contraption recently unveiled by Japan's Ministry of Defense should at least get the job done for what seems like a somewhat limited purpose. Unlike plane-style drones, this one can also

AMD's recent financial analyst day has made official what many of us already knew or suspected: there'll be three new high-end GPUs forthcoming in the first quarter of 2011. The slides explicitly describe the recently launched HD 6870 / 6850 as mere refreshes, aiming to bring HD 5800 series performance in a more efficient package, but peek beyond them and you'll see an armada of HD 6900 chips just

The free Tawkon application for the iPhone, BlackBerry and Android phones shows how radiation levels from your phone are effected when you give your phone that might squeeze of death, are trying to talk to
Amazon Banning One Vile Ebook: A Victory For…. What Exactly?
Well, that was exciting wasn’t it? Less than 24 hours after we, and twenty billion other media outlets, reported on the presence of a “guide to pedophilia” on Amazon, it looks like the retail giant may have decided to withdraw it from sale.
If the reports are true then parents can sleep easy in their beds: with the removal of one putrid, misspelled ebook, the Internet is now completely free of pedophiles.
Except, of course, it isn’t.
I was going to leave this story alone. Partly I

PhotoRocket Scores $1.3 Million For Ridiculously Easy Photo Sharing Tool
PhotoRocket, a Seattle-based startup that’s making it really, really easy to share photos with your contacts and via social networks, has raised just over $ 1.3 million according to an SEC filing.
The round brings the total of capital raised by the company to slightly north of $ 1.7 million.
The company just launched its photo sharing tool in private alpha last week, but I’m dying to try it out after watching the demo video and reading about how it works. Also,

Koss KEB40 Insider Headphones Review
Koss recently released a new set of headphones, the KEB40′s, into the affordable segment of the market. These small, metal, capsule-shaped headphones promise high-fidelity sound and long-lasting quality, but retail for under $ 30. How do they shape up? Read on for more…
Koss’s new KEB40′s arrived arrived a couple days ago, and I’ve been testing ever since. The retail package is relatively small, just the KEB40 headphones with the extra ear gaskets in a plastic pouch.

Special T, a Nespresso for Tea
You know the Nespresso, the home espresso machine that makes great – if rather packaging-heavy – coffee? Now there’s a version that does the same for tea.
It’s called the Special T, a nice combination of pun and rap-star name, and it works exactly like the coffee versions: pop in a capsule (€0.35 or $ 0.50 each) and hit the button. Boiling water passes through the tea and you end up with, presumably, a lovely cuppa.
Or do you? Although making tea is about the easiest

Fighting Words: Defining “Mobile” and “Computer”
The easiest way to stop an argument is to contest the meaning of words. That’s what debate coaches teach, and it’s what lawyers, philosophers and clever toddlers do every day. It’s also what Mark Zuckerberg did last week when he was asked about developing an app for iPad at the company’s “Facebook Mobile” event.
“The iPad’s not mobile,” Zuckerberg retorted. “Next question.” When the crowd murmured, he added, “It’s

iSteady Shot ARC Camera Stabilizer for iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS
About a year ago, Julie told you about the iSteady camera stabilizer for iPhone and iPod nano. After some time and some changes, the iSteady Shot ARC is available to pre-order. This camera stabilizer supports your iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS while you take videos and eliminates the shakes and jitters you often get with hand-held cameras – much like the SteadiCam used in the movie industry. The iSteady Shot ARC also works with most cameras weighing under one pound. There will be a

Sharp Touch Wood concept turns real with limited run of 15,000 handsets on NTT DoCoMo
You might have expected Sharp's pebble-shaped Touch Wood concept to remain just that, a concept, but the eclectic Japanese market has found a spot in its heart to fit 15,000 units of the curvy, wood-trimmed cellphone. Built from locally sourced cypress timber, each handset will have its own unique pattern and color, while the innards will be filled with a five megapixel imager, a 3.4-inch (854 x 480) display, a MicroSDHC expansion slot, and your usual GSM and 3G wireless radios. Jailbreaking team iPhoneIslam has managed to enable FaceTime on a jailbroken iPhone 3GS... sort of. iPhoneIslam's app, "FaceIt-3GS," is currently available in the Cydia store, and allows users to enable FaceTime in the iPhone 3GS's Settings app.
However, the functionality is quite limited. The most obvious stumbling block is hardware-related -- without a front-facing camera, the FaceTime experience will be quite limited on the iPhone 3GS no matter how creative jailbreakers get. iPhoneIslam's

Mac OS X 10.6.6 seeded while 10.6.5 still awaiting release
The Mac OS X 10.6.5 update hasn't been publicly released yet (although it's expected any day now), but according to 9to5 Mac Apple is already seeding builds of 10.6.6 to developers.
This is indicative of a few things. First, OS X 10.6.5 is likely finalized and ready for public release. Second, the tiny size of the 10.6.6 update (only 3.7 MB) and its small list of changes (mostly related to the forthcoming Mac App Store) indicate that the 10.6.6 update will likely come relatively soon after

We recently brought Blekko CEO Rich Skrenta into our office to talk about why his company’s recent attempt to enter a market where two search engines hold 90% of the market share is not completely insane. The prevailing “Blekko is doomed” argument holds that because Google already does search so well, it’s fruitless to for anyone else to bother trying.

Jobs says iTunes extras are 'coming' to Apple TV
Steve Jobs emails tend to lie along a spectrum: at one end, they're pretty much useless (and probably often fake), and at the other end, they're interesting little glances at features we might get in the future. I'm putting this one in the second category, but of course, as usual, it's up to you what you think of it. Jobs allegedly replied to a question about iTunes LPs and iTunes Extras arriving on the new Apple TV software anytime soon, and his one word reply, sent directly from his iPhone,
HomePlug Powerline Alliance and Wi-Fi Alliance align, hope for wireless home nirvana
Ah, now we're talking. Over the years, HomePlug and wireless HD / HDMI haven't exactly "taken off." Routing internet signals over a home's power network has been hampered by subpar transmission rates, and using wireless in the home for anything other than basic web duties has shown to be either too costly or too much hassle. UCLA / Caltech researchers help patients move mouse cursors with their brains
It's certainly not a revolutionary new concept -- whiz kids have been tinkering with brain-controlled interfaces for years on end -- but a collaboration between UCLA scientists and colleagues from the California Institute of Technology has taken the idea one leap closer to commercialization.
