Apple's OS X 10.9 Will Reportedly Allow Multi-Monitor Fullscreen, More Power-User Friendly Finder - techcrunch.com
Apple’s next version of OS X, 10.9 is on the way, according to 9to5Mac, and will offer an improved multi-monitor experience, finally allowing users to run fullscreen apps on one monitor and access different desktop spaces or other fullscreen apps alongside those. That’s a big plus for power users, but most of the other additions planned seem to be under the hood improvements instead of a dramatic amount of new features and UI changes.
The report cites anonymous sources and claims that what 10.9 will bring is more about iterating than overhauling, which is in keeping with Apple’s recent development strategy

For better or worse, Apple has been peddling digital wares for ten years through its iTunes store. What started as a 99 cent, iPod-centric music seller has evolved into the billion dollar behemoth we know today.
iTunes sells 35 million songs in 119 countries, movies in 109 countries and 850,000 iOS apps in 155 countries. After launching iTunes in 2003, Apple added podcasts in 2005, movies in 2006, and the App Store in 2008, along with iTunes U. It's not the most navigable or inexpensive place to shop for media, but the iTunes store is deeply embedded in the Apple ecosystem.

Since more than a few analysts, leakers and reports think Apple’s going to build a colorful set of plastic, low cost iPhones, we wondered what such an animal would look like. Since Apple already makes colorful iPod touches we started there. One report said that Apple would create at least three additional colors besides white and black. iLounge had more specifics saying it took some elements of iPhone, iPod touch and iPod classic? Since we didn’t know which colors to pick, we decided to do 10. Tactus claimed to have the plastic shell so we threw in a little of that as well.
We then fed it to one of our favorite 3D modelers Ferry Passchier.

While Apple is certainly not doomed, its future looks gloomy. That’s why today’s earnings will be important for the company.

It’s Time to Kill the ‘Apple Doesn’t Innovate’ Argument - cultofmac.com
There’s an argument in the platform wars, and also on Wall Street, that goes something like this: “Apple doesn’t innovate anymore. It moves too slowly, and is being taken over by more nimble, more innovative rivals.”
Any success Apple has is the result of slick marketing, rather than the newest technology. But now, Apple is a laggard and is being overtaken by more nimble companies.
Apple has an “innovation problem,” according to Forbes.
“Samsung is innovating faster than Apple,” according to Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster.

Some objects age gracefully. Think the design of products from 1960's era Braun. Or some of Apple's stuff. But that's just the design that stays timeless, the actual object gets beat up by both Father Time, Mother Nature and Careless Human. It's going to be rare to see a mint condition iPod a hundred years from now, just like it's rare to see something pristine from before World War I. There are a ton of Bluetooth headsets on the market today, and because I prefer talking hands-free, I’ve tried a lot of them. But as a Bluetooth enthusiast (yes, we exist), I’ve been continually frustrated. That’s because all the headsets I’ve tried thus far have missed the mark, especially when paired with an iPhone, delivering callers’ voices as muddy and hard to decipher, or making me sound like I live under the sea (I don’t).

We’ve reviewed a lot of Bluetooth speakers here at Cult of Mac, and yet to this day, the easiest one to recommend is still the speaker that launched the category: the venerable Jawbone Jambox.
Well, Jambox, move over: there’s a new king in town. We’ll be hard pressed to recommend you anymore after getting our hands on the JBL Flip, a Bluetooth speaker that has better (and louder) sound than the Jambox, at a cheaper price, and a killer trick up its sleeve: it’s also an external battery pack, capable of charging your iPhone on the go!
The Good
A little bit larger than the Jambox… but a much bigger sound.

Apple could introduce a redesigned backlighting system to the fifth-generation iPad to help make the device thinner and lighter, according to NDP DisplaySearch. The Cupertino company will have to make significant changes if it is to bring the iPad mini’s sleek and slim form factor to its bigger brother, and this is one of the areas in which it could reduce bulk.
“It’s likely that part of the thinner/lighter design will be reducing the size of the LED backlight, partly by making the display more efficient and partly by using more efficient LEDs,” said NDP analyst Paul Semenza. ”The other significant change that we feel is

The settlement should in theory see tens of thousands of Apple customers, previously refused repairs or replacement hardware under warranty, receive cash payouts. It's amusing to note, however, that Apple admits no wrongdoing in the settlement (see PDF below).
The case revolves around a white tape indicator, embedded in the iPhone and iPod Touch, which was used to measure the effects of water

There seem to be two ways to make a Wi-Fi-enabled camera. The first is to build an actual camera and add a Wi-Fi radio. The second is to make an iPod Touch with a decent 5MP camera module inside. Depending on your requirements, either one can be great.
But there now appears to be a third way. Samsung has taken a camera, added an Android phone, and then taken away the phone part of that phone. Behold! The Wi-Fi Galaxy Camera.
The camera is of course more than that snarky introduction would suggest. Unlike the iPod Touch the Galaxy Camera packs a big, zoomable lens and a non-tiny sensor. And of course it has all the image-processing apps available for the

Google’s statement on Facebook’s introduction of “Home” was short and sweet, but very telling, so let’s dissect it a little bit. As we noted earlier, Facebook went with Android first because of its flexibility. Basically it’s easy to customize.
Other platforms, not so much. Zuckerberg even mentioned that Windows Phone might be a bit easier to work with, calling it out as “somewhere in the middle” of Android and iOS.
Here’s what Google said to us a little while ago:

Combining the backyard pastimes of hot tubs and fire pits, Cal Spas has created the Cal Flame R-Elements: a hot tub that surrounds those inside with a series of small butane fire pits. Because as anyone who's ever escaped a burning building will tell you, there's nothing more exciting than being surrounded by fire.
The fire pits are included as decorative enhancements, but an open flame is an open flame, so with enough patience and determination you can probably make it work as the world's first hot tub barbecue. Other amenities include color-changing LED lighting, a small relaxing waterfall, an iPod

Apple Moves To Help Parents With A Small Change To Its App Store Ratings - techcrunch.com
Apple made a small but important change to the way its mobile apps appear in the iTunes App Store, which will help parents better determine which applications and games are appropriate for their children. The company has relocated the age rating (e.g. 9+, 12+, etc.) by moving it up from its previous position at the bottom of the app’s detail page, so that it now appears directly beneath the app title and publisher.
Apple-watching blog Appleinsider spotted this problem today, remarking that the change comes after a couple of high-profile cases this year which had Apple pulling apps from its store due to inappropriate content. For instance,

What If The Budget iPhone Looked Like The iMac G3? - cultofmac.com
I really like Nikolai Lamm’s concepts for imaginary, rumored, (and possibly forthcoming) Apple products, and this transparent concept for a cheaper budget iPhone is no exception. I love how it merges the 2012 iPod touch’s candy colored backshell with the iMac G3’s transparent casing.
I think there’s little to no chance Apple would actually make an iPhone that looks like this — in the mind of Jonny Ive, transparent gadgets are so 1998, I bet — but heck, I’d buy a phone like this.

Opinions Differ Widely On The Effectiveness of Apple's Apology In China - techcrunch.com
Tim Cook’s apology to Apple’s Chinese customers has divided observers, some of whom claim that the public mea culpa might undermine the Cupertino company by giving credence to government criticism. Cook’s letter was posted (link via Google Translate) on the Chinese Apple Web site on Monday after two weeks of heated attacks by China’s state-run media.
Cook focused on Apple’s communication over its warranty and said the company would change its repair policy for iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S devices sold in China. “We realize a lack of communication in this process has led to speculation that Apple is arrogant and doesn’t care about or

Facebook's Android Homescreen Could Expose Apple's Inflexibility - techcrunch.com
