Rumor: Apple working on standalone iSight camera?
The New iPad Buyers’ Guide published by iLounge this week included a piece that speculated Apple might be working on a standalone camera product. While the story discussed the possibility of Apple working on a point-and-shoot iSight camera, iLounge clearly labeled it as speculation and simultaneously noted it received a tip claiming Apple is working on the project.
Take special note of pages 152 and 153—“Making the case for a standalone iSight Camera.” I’ll share more on this topic shortly, but for now, I’ll say that this two-page spread very nearly had a different title. We were tipped that this project is actually happening at Apple right now, but we didn’t feel

Google lobs antitrust complaint against Microsoft, Nokia in EU, claims they're playing patent footsie The gloves just came off at Google: the company has just filed an antitrust complaint with the European Commission against Microsoft and Nokia. Its gripe accuses the two Windows Phone partners of playing dirty pool through handing 1,200 wireless-related patents to Mosaid, a Canadian firm which spends most of its time suing the industry over WiFi rather than making products. Microsoft and Nokia are allegedly hiking the prices of devices by "creating patent trolls" that bypass deals preventing them from suing directly, possibly steering a few companies towards picking Windows Phone instead of Android. Google argues that it's launching the

Death To The Dock Connector? Apple Is Looking For A Connector Design Engineer Could Apple really be looking to end their longstanding affair with the 30-pin Dock Connector? It's been a move that's been rumored for years, and a job opening at Cupertino for a Connector Design Engineer adds a bit of fuel to that fire.

This person will be "responsible for managing multiple connector designs and developments in support of the iPod product lines." It goes on to describe that this task will "involve adaptation of existing connectors or complete new designs." It's apparently important enough to Apple that they've got another, very similar listing on their jobs page.If it is about an Apple mobile device, then we address it right here

Tim Cook: Apple doubling-down on Siri, 'stay tuned' on Facebook developments Well, it looks like secrecy isn't the only thing that Apple is doubling-down on these days. Speaking at D10, Tim Cook said that that Apple is "doubling down on Siri," adding that "you'll be really pleased with what you see in the coming months on this." He did also acknowledge that Siri currently has its shortcomings, but said that "customers love it," and that "what makes Siri cool is that she has a personality." When it came to a largely non-existent iOS feature at the moment -- Facebook integration -- Cook said to "stay tuned," noting that he has "great respect for them," and that he wants Facebook's hundreds of millions of customers to have "the best

Tim Cook Explains How Apple Names Its Products, iPhone 4S Stands For “Siri”

During the Q&A session at D10 today Apple CEO Tim Cook was asked an interesting question about how his company names its products. While many have speculated as to why Apple called the fifth-generation iPhone the “4S” back in October, Cook confirmed that the smartphone was named after its flagship feature, Siri.
Apple names its products each generation by either a flagship feature or design change. When a certain product establishes itself, naming conventions are usually dropped altogether, like the iMac and iPod Shuffle.
“Lot of people ask me that about iPad,” Cook said. “If you look back at iPod, we had an iPod and we changed it a few times and

He’s convinced that he has at least ten reasons to stay bullish on Apple stock over the next three years. He also thinks the stock price is going to hit $1000 per share.

Apple Pushes Out Revised iOS 5.1.1 Build On GSM iPhone 4 For No Apparent Reason

The weekend hasn’t arrived quite yet, as Apple has quietly pushed out a revised build of iOS 5.1.1 for the GSM iPhone 4 (AT&T). While most of the publishers quickly settled the lawsuit, Apple decided to fight. Earlier this week, as Ars Technica reports today, Apple responded (PDF) to the government’s accusations. Apple doesn’t mince words in its response. The company’s lawyers call the case against Apple “fundamentally flawed as a matter of fact and law” and say that the idea that Apple tried to reduce competition and fix prices is “absurd.”
In its complaint, the U.S. government said Apple

Is Siri a success for Apple?
Oh, Siri. Apple’s little voice-activated personal assistant in iOS can handle questions, give recommendations, and delegate requests, but does it really live up to expectations?
The folks in Cupertino like to roll out advertisements that show Siri capable of compiling individual preferences with personalized results, and even completing basic tasks like finding a nearby restaurant, but the software has met a very mixed reaction since its Beta début on the iPhone 4S in October. People who felt misled by Siri’s functionality depicted in commercials even filed a class action lawsuit agianst Apple earlier this year.

A game of inches: Next iPhone screen approaches 4 inches (3.999…)
We did some math last night on the iPhone screen based on the 326ppi that Apple currently uses for Retina handheld devices. We did some rounding and got just over 3.95 inches diagonal. Rounding on numbers this important is a bad idea, so today we decided to let the calculator keep all of those decimals.
Here is Pythagoras:
1136Pixels/326PPI=3.484… inches for one side
640Pixels/326PPI = 1.9632…inches same as the current
Square both sides: x^2 + y^2 = 15.9924. Take the Square root…
3.9990511674646 ~ 4 inches.
If this iPhone becomes the one Apple sells as the “new iPhone”, then we will likely see it called a “4-inch

There’s no denying that Apple’s App Store is the best source for smartphone and tablet apps, and it’s one of the biggest reasons why users continue to purchase iOS devices. Game Capture HD Records Gameplay From Xbox Or PlayStation And Sends To Mac
Elgato has announced Game Capture HD, a USB device that will record gameplay from a Microsoft Xbox 360 or Sony PlayStation 3 and send it to a Mac or PC. The little dongle requires no power supply, and it uses HDMI to record HD footage from a Xbox 360 and AV to record from a PlayStation 3. Elgato uses H.264 video compression to capture 480i, 576p, 720p or 1080i video. Theoretically, Game Capture HD will also work to capture most signals from other HDMI/component-enabled devices.
When capturing gameplay footage with the new device, you can still keep playing on a regular TV via HDMI. The desktop software allows you to edit and timeshift footage before saving it or

The Upside Down Apple Logo: A Steve Jobs Mistake
An old PowerBook with an upside down Apple logo on Sex and the City.

When you open up your MacBook, MacBook Air, or MacBook Pro, the glowing Apple logo on its hood sits upright so that everyone in Starbucks knows that you’re using a Mac. However, it hasn’t always been that way. There was a time when Apple logos were upside down on the lid of Apple notebooks, until Steve Jobs realized his mistake.
Joe Moreno, a former Apple employee, has taken to his blog to explain the story behind that upside down Apple logo on late Apple notebooks.

About a dozen years ago we had some discussions at Apple about the placement of the logo on the back of Apple’s laptops.

Hands-on with the Electric Imp at Maker Faire (video) Yesterday at Maker Faire Bay Area 2012 we visited the Electric Imp booth to chat with the startup's founders and get some hands-on time with the tiny wireless computer. What is the Electric Imp? It's a module containing an ARM Cortex M3 SoC with embedded WiFi that's built into an SD card form factor. While the device looks just like and SD card, it's not pin-compatible with the standard -- the idea is to leverage a reliable and affordable connector for the Electric Imp. The module is not very useful on its own -- it only comes to life when inserted into one of several boards, which provide the Electric Imp with power and access to the real world. In

iOS 5.1.1 Untethered Jailbreak ‘Absinthe 2.0′ To Drop This Week

Big news from the jailbreak community can tend to come out on the weekends, and this weekend is no exception. Earlier today Chronic Dev Team hacker pod2g confirmed that the upcoming untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1.1 is only a “matter of days” away from dropping. We’ve been telling you that the jailbreak is coming for months, but it looks like things are finally coming together for a public release.
Coincidentally, a hacking convention called “Hack in the Box“ will be taking place this week, and the Chronic Dev Team will be there in full force. We’re hearing that the new jailbreak tool will likely be announced at the conference. The name of the new jailbreak

Review: Tenqa REMXD $39 over-the-ear Bluetooth headphones – Cans this good should cost more

.
For a pair of headphones under the $50 mark, we often find ourselves recommending something like the standard $35 Apple earphones. You typically can’t beat the sound quality (build quality up for debate) for the price, but if you want to go Bluetooth, pickings are slim in the under $200 category.
If you’re looking for DJ-style, over-ear Bluetooth headphones, your options are even fewer before hitting the $250+ price point for a wireless pair of Beats By Dr.Dre.
However, at just $39, Tenqa’s Remxd Bluetooth Headphones are clearly not for the pros, but looking at the Bluetooth alternatives

Microsoft exec says Windows Phone outselling iPhone in China Going by Microsoft's Greater China COO Michel van der Bel, the launch of Windows Phone in China is off to an auspicious start -- enough to give Apple the shakes. He claims that devices like the Nokia Lumia 800c have helped Windows Phone reach seven percent of the Chinese market, or just enough to get past the six points of the iPhone. We're waiting on hard data before we take van der Bel's word: the top smartphone makers worldwide aren't depending much or at all on Windows Phone, and the iPhone has a thriving gray market in China that masks some of its real numbers. Having said this, we've seen signs of Windows Phone enjoying a bit of a surge even in an iOS- and

There are currently two movies about Steve Jobs in the works. The one we’re most excited for is based off Walter Isaacson’s official biography and is being made by Sony in conjunction with Oscar-winning screenwriter Aaron Sorkin. An indie film dubbed jOBS and starring Ashton Kutcher as Jobs is also underway. More information about the second film has been released.

Apple began in a garage on Crist Drive in Los Altos, California.

PowerMac G5 Evolves Into Next Generation Macquarium

The Macquarium has been around for decades, starting as a project to make use of old compact Mac cases. Subsequent iterations have seen many different variations – beige Performas, G3 iMacs, G4 Cubes, etc.. But this latest iteration is unique, and probably has the best structural integrity of them all.
Steve Shaw recently created his Macquarium from a PowerMac G5 case (mislabeled as a Mac Pro in the video), elbow grease and some powertools. He did a nice job, bright and airy. I love the Apple logo in the rear and overall industrial look. And the totem head.
Next up we need a Siamese fighting fish in a Mac Mini…

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak hired as “tutor” on Jobs, Apple for Sony biopic
Reuters reports on comments from Aaron Sorkin, the screen writer of the upcoming Steve Jobs biopic from Sony. Sorkin says that the film will not be much like the biography, and that while he knows what he is not going to put into the screenplay, he knows “so little about what going to write.”
“I know so little about what I am going to write. I know what I am not going to write. It can’t be a straight ahead biography because it’s very difficult to shake the cradle-to-grave structure of a biography, ” Sorkin told reporters at a news conference for his upcoming HBO drama “The Newsroom.”

RIM and Motorola modify nano-SIM proposal, hope to meet Apple halfway It's been a battle of epic proportions over a microscopic piece of plastic, but the warring sides appear to be working together to find a compromise. We're referring to the fight between Apple and a coalition formed by RIM, Motorola and Nokia as each group attempts to make their own nano-SIM design the ETSI standard. Neither entity has seemed willing to extend an olive branch and come up with any compromise -- until recently. RIM and Motorola has updated their design proposal in an effort to reach middle ground with Cupertino, and it appears that they were more than accommodating in the chip's refreshed look (seen above). Why The Internet Doesn’t Make Us Care More About Politics
American politics used to be fun: frequent political carnivals in the 19th century would mix parties, parades, and political speeches in an endless stream of local civic life. As a result, America had an astonishingly high turnout, between 70-90%, in presidential and local elections. Yet, the Internet has never quite captured the emotional gravity of real-life engagement, and keeps tripping up multi-million dollar campaigns designed to inject life into an otherwise passive electorate.
For example, take two technology initiatives that were widely predicted to dramatically increase democratic engagement: Obama’s 2008 campaign and Americans Elect. Despite the hype, Barack

Apple teases hardware-specific “special features” in upcoming OS X Mountain Lion builds
Apple has long had a program called “AppleSeed” that seeds upcoming versions of Apple software (both iOS and OS X related) to customers. These seeds typically come to this select group of customers even before they are provided to Apple’s paid and registered developers. Today, the company sent an atypical email to this customer group, informing them to register the different pieces of Apple hardware available to them for software testing. The company says that they need this information for “exclusive seeds” for future versions of OS X Mountain Lion. Even more exciting is that the

Actually, it's all of the above, but the last part is especially bad. I don't even care that they didn't get Jobs' signature grey New Balances right. Whatever. The really, extremely bad thing here is that you can't bloody put a 1980s Steve Jobs inside his 2000s jeans and black turtleneck uniform.

To 4G Or Not 4G? Apple Pulls “WiFi+4G” Branding For iPads
What is 4G? Many an armchair philosopher over the past few weeks has pondered this concept and now, thanks to a minor tempest caused by upset customers, Apple has changed their iPad branding from “WiFi+4G” to “WiFi+Cellular.”
Although the iPads were compatible with US 4G networks, the iPads didn’t work with international 4G connections, thereby dropping a few folks in Australia into a tizzy. To prevent this, Apple put the old moniker down the memory hole and replaced it with the new naming convention.
Although Apple posted notices at the point of sale explaining the terminology, they also completely changed world-wide branding to reflect the concerns.

Apple has not finalized their design choice for the new iPhone
The screen will likely be capped at 4 inches (if it gets bigger at all)
Smaller dock connector is currently in development for the new device
Home button stays
No metal back
Launch is still in October and LTE is still in the cards

These details come after an iLounge report in which the site claimed the new iPhone would gain a longer display with a partially metal back. Since Apple prototypes many designs for upcoming products, it is very likely (given they have provided

Thunderbolt on Windows gets hands-on, lacks Mac's hot-swapping Thunderbolt's 10-gigabit interface is only just making its way to Windows after spending more than a year as a Mac-only feature, so it's not surprising that a lot of questions surround how well the Apple- and Intel-developed connection works for those of a Microsoft persuasion. A thorough test at AnandTech of one of the first motherboards to support the spec on Windows PCs, an Ivy Bridge-ready board from MSI, has shown some positive signs along with a few flies in the high-speed ointment. The good news? Most general storage devices will work as expected with a minimum of fuss, and you can even get some features of Apple's Thunderbolt

Judge dismisses Proview’s California version of iPad trademark lawsuit against Apple
The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple’s May 4th motion for a California version of the Proview/iPad trademark case to be dismissed has been approved. The saga has been long-running, with Proview claiming that Apple illegally purchased the right to use the “iPad” trademark in China. Apple filed a request for the case dismissal when it reached the U.S. because they say it’s an issue relating solely to the iPad trademark in China. Even so, Apple continues to say that they legally purchased the trademark prior to the iPad going on sale in China. The China-based portion of the lawsuit is ongoing.

New iPad to hit 30 more countries this weekend, work on its tan The corners of the Earth that don't have a new iPad have been quickly shrinking, and Apple's tablet is about to get nigh-on inescapable as of this weekend. A round of 23 more countries is getting the 2012 refresh on May 11, most of it being South American countries such as Foxconn's new manufacturing hub, Brazil. Parts of Africa and southeast Asia will be served as well, such as the home of our favorite unofficial hands-on sessions, Vietnam. Seven Persian Gulf countries will get their Retina Display fix one day later. By the time the weekend is up, the iPad will be available in nearly 90 countries on this planet, which makes it highly

2012 has been a good year for vintage Macs surfacing from obscurity. Earlier this year we brought you news about an original 128k Mac with 5.25’ Twiggy floppy disk for sale on eBay. This same owner contacted Cult of Mac recently to share some photos of his latest rare find: a prototype Macintosh SE with a clear plastic outer case, used for engineering air flow studies.

Amtrak Trains To Use iPhones As eTicket Scanners America's trains are getting an iPhone-sized upgrade.

Apple’s iPhone is about to be implemented into the American railroad system in a big way. Amtrak, the government agency that oversees the nation’s train services, will be adopting the iPhone as a digital ticket scanner. The 1,700 conductors who currently work for Amtrak have been undergoing training with the iPhone since November, and the new initiative will be fully rolled out by late summer.
Amtrak will be able to monitor passenger check-ins in real time thanks to an iPhone app that’s used to scan tickets. Each conductor’s iPhone will be equipped with a special case and barcode scanner. The traditional method of

Track 8 Music Player Brings Microsoft’s Beautiful Metro Design to iPad People tend think of Macs as the "creative" computer and Windows as the "business" computer, but those lines have blurred for years. System administrators figured out how to support iPhones for enterprise email; Windows Phone looks great from a design perspective; and have you noticed that Apple doesn't even ship a basic image editor anymore, and yet Microsoft remembers to include MS Paint?
Windows Metro, a well-received Microsoft design aesthetic from a company initially known for ugly products, is an excellent example of how Microsoft sometimes makes stuff that looks cool.

Changes coming to Apple’s One to One program later this month
Apple has long had a $99 program called One to One that provides setup assistance, training, project help, and more to Apple product users. The program began with a focus on assisting new Mac owners, but with Apple’s recent iOS device push, the One to One program has expanded to cover iPhone, iPad, iCloud and more product lines. While not completely revamping the program, Apple will unveil a series of important changes to the program later this month:

One to One sessions can currently be scheduled for one hour. Apple will soon be adding a thirty minute option for users working on smaller projects or for users who need less help than others.

Switched On: Competing by hook or by Nook Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology. Microsoft has a long history of supporting bitter rivals -- even those that have long publicly disparaged the company, offering funds to Nokia, Corel and, most famously, Apple. It also has a long history of supporting e-reading. Prior to ending development last year, the company offered its Microsoft Reader software for about a decade -- first on handheld devices using Windows CE and Windows Mobile and later on desktop Windows. Those two traditions intersected yesterday as Microsoft invested in a new Nook e-book business designed to compete better against Apple and especially Amazon.com.Continue reading

Many have been wondering what Apple will call the next-generation iPhone. iPhone 5? iPhone 6? iPhone 4G Epic Touch? Or what about “the new iPhone?” After the third-gen iPad, it looks like Apple may be starting to abandon its traditional naming conventions for iOS devices altogether.
Interestingly, Apple has filed a claim with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) to gain control of the iPhone5.com domain name.
First noted by Fusible, Apple Computer, Inc. has filed with the WIPO for ownership of the iPhone5.com domain, indicating that the company wants control over the web address. Case number D2012-0951 is currently

Sprint CEO takes pay cut as investors voice concern about cost of iPhone deal Sprint Nextel's $15.5 billion gamble on Apple's iPhone will apparently lighten CEO Dan Hesse's proverbial wallet by $3.25 million this year. That's how much compensation Hesse agreed to give back to help placate investors unhappy about the high cost of the company's iPhone deal. Securing the iPhone has already paid dividends for Sprint in terms of sales. The company sold 1.5 million iPhones in the first quarter while posting a net subscriber growth of 263,000. That didn't stop Sprint from posting an $863 million net loss during the same period, however, causing some investors to grumble about the cost of subsidizing Apple's phone. The subsidy Sprint pays for each

Jailbreakers: SwipeSelection adds awesome gestures to the iPad keyboard
Remember that awesome video we showed you this morning that portrayed how text editing on the iPad should be? It involved dragging small blue cursors to highlight a portion of text and several other gestures to make editing text on the iPad much easier. Luckily whether Apple decides to act on those cool features or not, it looks like jailbreakers may be getting a chance to play with the features soon. Jeff Benjamin from iDownloadBlog shows us a new jailbreak tweak called SwipeSelection, that works much like the mockup from this morning. You can see Benjamin showing it off above.
