Video Game Storage – LevelUp Ottomans

I wouldn’t say that I’m a neat freak, but I like an uncluttered house. That’s not saying that my house isn’t cluttered, because it is… except for my basement. It’s been newly remodeled and is the role model for the rest of the house. If you need a kick start to cleaning up some the clutter in your own home, how about starting with your gaming gear. If you are like most gaming geeks, you probably have games, controllers and consoles scattered willy nilly all

Hundred Year Starship Initiative plans to put people on Mars by 2030, bring them back by... well, never (video)

For a while now, there has been a conversation going on in certain circles (you know, space circles): namely, if the most prohibitive part of a manned flight to Mars would be the return trip, why bother returning at all? And besides the whole "dying alone on a hostile planet 55-million-plus kilometers from your family, friends, and loved ones" thing, we think it's a pretty solid consideration. This is just one of the topics of discussion at a recent Long Now Foundation event in San Francisco,

Google Makes Improvements to mobile web version of Gmail

Google has posted an update to their blogger account notating some new changes to their mobile version of Gmail. From the looks of it, scrolling looks to be much improved as far as smoothness goes. Before the pages seemed to be a bit more choppy and the distance it would scroll wasn’t always very accurate. That problem appears to be fixed.

They’ve also added a floating toolbar that will remain static even when you scroll. This should make it a lot easier to jump around

Apple posts higher revenue than Microsoft

Apple earned more revenue this quarter than their ancient frenemy, Microsoft. Roughly $ 20 billion to $ 16 billion, or $ 4 billion more. Not too long ago they passed Microsoft in market cap as well, another impressive sounding, if not terribly meaningful measure. Microsoft still leads in profit due to their software-centric business being much higher margin than Apple’s hardware-heavy mix. But that too could and just might change as well.

Twitter’s Snowflake Project To Update Tweet IDs Really Is More Like A Blizzard Now

Last week, we noted that Twitter was on the verge of executing their long-in-the-making Snowflake project. Basically, this was a necessary step to switch up the way tweet IDs are handled due of Twitter’s move from MySQL to Cassandra for their database infrastructure. Twitter clearly realized that the switch-over might be a little bumpy, and that’s why they started alerting third-party developers about it months ago. But it turns out it’s even more bumpy than they realized. And

LOLApps Back On Facebook After UID Issues

This weekend Facebook shut down some applications that were found by the WSJ to have been sharing Facebook User IDs (a unique profile identifier Facebook uses in its APIs) to independent ad networks and internet tracking services such as RapLeaf.
According to the Journal, these UID transferal issues were the primary reason Facebook took down apps run by the social gaming company LOLApps on Friday, including its popular flagship “Critter Island.” Two days later, according to a

KDDI crafts gorgeous see-thru designer phone with LED sub-display and dual-mode radios (video)

KDDI launched a wave of new phones this morning, but this is the one we really want to hold -- it's called the X-RAY, and it's one of two new products in the company's iida designer brand. Crafted by Tokujin Yoshioka, it's a high-end Japanese clamshell with a 1-Seg TV tuner, NFC payments, and an 8 megapixel camera -- you know, the usual -- but with a translucent case (also available in blue and black) that leaves nothing to the imagination. There's a QSD8650 CDMA-ready Snapdragon in there, a

Sprint promises WiMax in NYC on November 1, LA on December 1, and San Francisco a few weeks later

The fact that Sprint and Clearwire have teamed up to deliver WiMAX to New York, LA, and San Francisco isn't news. In fact, we've already seen the networks light up in operational readiness modes on the way to full consumer availability. But now we've got dates, the first specifics that we can recall for these cities. Now, according to both Clearwire and Sprint, New York's WiMAX service will go live on November 1st, LA's on December 1st, and San Francisco sometime around the end of December.

Mark Zuckerberg On Facebook’s Strategy For China (And His Wardrobe)

Today at Y Combinator’s Startup School, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg sat down for a lengthy interview with Jessica Livingston. The topics discussed ranged from Facebook’s beginnings (including a brief discussion of The Social Network) to the social network’s strategy in China, which has proved to be problematic for other Western tech companies like Google.
Zuckerberg says that for years Facebook didn’t have a strategic plan for international growth — each month, the

Sony's Google TVs on sale at Best Buy tomorrow, already hitting stores?

Sony told us that Best Buy wouldn't begin selling its Google TV sets until October 24, but it looks like that wasn't quite right -- sources within the big box retailer tell us the TVs have already arrived, and will be free for all to purchase when an October 17th street date breaks tomorrow morning. The scrap of paper you see above goes on to suggest that full shipments may not actually arrive until the 19th and that the Logitech Revue won't appear until the 20th, but if you're looking to get

PCalc 2.3 now available for iPhone, iPad [Give away]

PCalc, one of our favorite iPhone and iPad calculator apps (see Leanna’s PCalc review), has just hit version 2.3, and in celebration the developer has very kindly offered us a bunch of promo codes to give away. To you. But first things first:

This free update has many improvements, but the key one is taking advantage of the additional screen space on the iPad. You can now permanently show the paper tape, RPN stack, and memories onscreen in a new sidebar area. This was the number one

Eizo rolls out 17-inch FlexScan T1751 multitouch monitor

Eizo may not be aiming this one directly at average consumers, but there's nothing stopping you from picking up its new 17-inch FlexScan T1751 monitor to make your industrial-style mutlitouch dreams come true. As you can sort of see above, this one can either be used upright or titled nearly flat, and it packs a non-widescreen, 5:4 aspect ratio -- albeit with a slightly disappointing 1,280 x 1,024 resolution. The monitor will work with a touch pen and gloved hands, however, and you'll get a

Is this the new MacBook Air?

We just received this shot of what is purportedly the inside of the new MacBook Air. Contrary to popular belief, the machine appears to be another 13.3-incher, with the primary modification being extra room for battery cells and apparently no room for a hard drive. Of course, this is only one SKU, so who knows what else Apple has in store. From what we can tell from the photo, Apple is taking its unibody styling and construction and running with it here, not that the MacBook Air was too far

Is ReadySTEADY Video-Stabilizer Any Better than String?

Here’s how not to pitch a product for review:
I read your review of the Gorillapod video with some interest. I think you were too kind.
The Gorillapod will only solve the problem of shaky video with pocket camcorders if you happen to be shooting near a table or stationary object.
As an avid Flip and Playsport user, I can tell you this isn’t the case most of the time.
The ReadySTEADY is a much better stabilizer for pocket video cameras. Better yet, it really does fit in your pocket.

Shocker! Touchscreen cellphones are dirty

If you have even the slightest inclination towards Mysophobia then please, do yourself a favor and stop reading now. A Stanford University study found that if you put a virus on a touchscreen surface then about 30 percent of it will make the jump to the fingertips of anyone who touches it. From there it goes into the eyes, mouth, or nose -- whichever face-hole needs a rub most. And just to drive the point home, the Sacramento Bee adds this little nugget from an unspecified British study:

Consumers Fail to Take a Shine to 3-D TVs

3-D could just be a fad and consumers may be already losing interest. Sales of 3-D TVs have not been growing as fast as TV-makers expected this year, says research firm DisplaySearch.
High price of the devices and the unavailability of good 3-D content have contributed to the lack of consumer enthusiasm for 3-D TVs, says the company.
Just about 3.2 million 3-D TVs are expected to be shipped worldwide this year. Of these, just about 1.6 million will be in North America.

Google's driverless car drives interest in driverless cars (video)

Self-driving cars are hardly new. We've seen dozens of automatic vehicles over the years, many of which have seen advances driven (so to speak) by various DARPA challenges. But now that Google's involved -- whoa! -- the mainstream media is suddenly whipped into a frenzy of hyperbolic proclamations about the future. Still, it is fascinating stuff to watch. Google’s Awesomely Useful And Obvious “Highlight To Search” Chrome Extension

Sometimes, it’s the little things in life.
Earlier this evening, Google published a post on their Chrome Blog highlighting some of their favorite new extensions for the Chrome web browser. As there are now something north of 8,000 Chrome Extensions out there, this seems like a good idea (which Google plans to do regularly) to highlight new ones. But buried at the bottom of the list is one Google made themselves. It’s called Highlight to Search. And

Opera Mobile coming to Android within a month, bearing hardware acceleration and pinch-to-zoom

Forget all that Mini stuff, Opera is bringing its full-flavored mobile browser to Android some time very soon indeed. To tempt people on board, the new software will support hardware acceleration for buttering up frame rates while you zoom around at potato-scalding speeds, while pinch-to-zoom will also be implemented in a big O Android browser for the first time. Opera Mini will be partaking in the latter upgrade as well, while Opera Mobile proper is expected to make its debut on the Android

Pioneer blings out HDJ-1000 headphones, turns them into a $209 Limited Edition

The thing with headphones, and sound equipment in general, is that if you get the design right the first time, you don't leave yourself much room for significant upgrades down the line. Pioneer seems to have fallen into that trap with its HDJ-1000 set of cans, which are today getting rehashed in a pair of new shades: the extrovert gold number above and an understated all-black look. Pioneer hasn't left the innards completely unretouched, however, as it has nipped and tucked a few bits to allow

Apple thinks of the children, patents parent-controlled text communication

US patent 7814163 has been granted to Apple under the title "Text-based communication control for personal communication device." It describes the ability to control content sent and received from an "administered device" as defined by a parental control application. If objectionable content is detected based on a table of words stored locally on the device, the content can either be removed or the message blocked entirely. It can also enforce a designated language for children who, for
